Some of you ....ummm....old timers....from Oregon may remember Ed Burnap and his Bronco? A great looking Bronco that was pretty quick too... It was bought by Dave Fahini in BC and he ended up having a huge crash with it while short course racing in Kamloops. It is sitting behind one of my friends shops right now, patiently waiting for a complete rebuild.

That is awesome! Sweet Bronco! I love the old school rigs and that one looks well built for the era.

Small world. Ed's my dad and we were wondering awhile ago what happend to the bronco. So it's not a complete loss? It would be nice to see it fixed up. Do you happen to have any recent photos pre/post wreck?

We've been discussing purchasing a full size to start racing again in the next couple of years.

Hey Phoenix, I did not realize you were on here too. I am a lurker over at CB...from what I remember, your dad and the Bronco were pretty quick, although I think you and I are probably about the same age, so everything seemed fast back then when we were kids!

Remember Bob Nyeste with the black 79 Bronco? Well his son Dale and I are still good friends. Dale is part of a race fab shop in Kamloops and he was saying that Fahini left the Bronco there for them to fix up, but it is at the bottom of the priority list. I saw some pictures before and after crash...it looked really rough after. Dale said they will pretty much have to start from scratch. Apparently, it was a masterpiece before it was wrecked. He was rebuilding it when I moved from BC, so I never saw the finished product. I will try to get a hold of the pictures for you... I cannot remember where I found them online. I think it was on the old Kamloops site. Anyways, I am heading back home to BC for a visit in September and I will try to get some shots for you if I can.

Another BC racer bought Chamberlins old green Scout 800 years ago but as far as I know, it never made a race.

You guys should definatly look at getting back into racing...lots of money, but worth it. A buddy of Dales bought a Pro Truck last summer and they have hit a few BITD races, along with Bob. Kamloops has mostly short course racing now, although Dale has been talking about having a 3 hour enduro like we used to have.

I have to scan some of my old photos from the trips down to Washington and Oregon...Eric Kosel and Scott (what was his last name? Tigard?) orange Jeeps, among other things.

You're right, everything is fast when you're that size. I'm 25 so I don't really remember a whole lot, just bits and pieces.

I don't remember that specific one, but my dad says it ran on propane. Is that correct?

That would be awesome if Dale could get it running again. I seem to remember the big reason my dad sold it was because he was starting to have a problem with the cage cracking in various spots after races. I used to have a fun time just climbing around in that thing when it was parked at home. We actually still have the wheels that were on it. Those old centerlines are pretty nice. I would appreciate the photos if you can get a hold of them.

I have to scan some of my old photos from the trips down to Washington and Oregon...Eric Kosel and Scott (what was his last name? Tigard?) orange Jeeps, among other things. I think you mean Gordon Scott. I remember hanging around his pit from time to time after my dad stopped racing. I just when to the Mint 400 with my dad, gordon, and phil dean (if that rings a bell). phil used to race bugs and had a kid named teddy.

I think it will be a couple of years before we get anything going since i'm in between jobs as of the moment. But we've sat down and talked about what we want out of a race truck. So in a couple of years you all had better watch out!

I am 36, so I guess I am a few years older.

Bobs Bronco was a gas 460, but his Class 4 F150 was propane powered...he built it after he wrecked the Bronco...late 80's early 90's. He finished the 1000 with it twice. I will make a point of getting some pictures when I am there in September...I will have to steal some pictures from Bob and spend a few months scanning them...I know he has tons and probably has a few of this Bronco.

Gordon Scott...that is right...and the name Phil Dean rings a bell but I cannot picture his vehicle. I have the old issue of Four Wheeler where they came up to Millican and it snowed...I will have to scan it...that will bring back some memories for ya!

I keep on saying that I am going to build up another truck, but life keeps on getting in the way! I am on the promotional side of the off road racing in Ontario, as well as doing lots of motorsports photography. I would like to get back to racing myself, though.

i live in Bend were those pics were taken out in Millican. I am still pissed that they closed the races down. I do still off road in the valley out there. Millican is a ghost town now thanks to the environmentals! That was one reason I moved here over 11 years ago was to be close to the desert and see some racing.

Yeah, I know. People still go out there to test when it's open though.

Gordon Scott raced a Willys that he sold to Eric Kosel and then the red CJ-7. I am not aware of him racing a Bronco. May have been before my time. I do not recognize the Bronco...Maybe Phoenix will recognize it. I will see what I can do to find some info for you.

I posted your photos over on "the" race bronco thread on Classic Broncos. If you have not seen it yet, it is worth it! Basicly every photo or a link to photos of early race Broncos.

Anyways, gud answered with some more photos, but no more info.

As far as I know, gordon never owned a Bronco, just flatfenders and his current CJ7. I seem to remember something like this though somewhere around Portland. Since Gordon is old school and probably checks his email every year or 2, I'll forward it to Phil Dean and see what he knows.

Hmmm a Chevy engine in that thing. Built back when Ford parts were harder to come by I guess.

I talked to Gordon the other day. He never owned it. He did work on the engine once. It belonged to a guy named "big" Rick from around Portland. The previous poster (Moss?) is right, Chevy's were cheaper to build, and also, Rick probably didn't know anything about Ford motors or tranny's..Still kind of sacrilige(?) though. Ford SVO were pretty proud of their parts then.

HighBronco, any updates on your rig? Are you going to be racing in the Washington and Oregon desert races this summer?

Went to the Goldendale race two weekends ago to watch and talk to the racers. Got another name on who owned it, now just have to track him down. I'm going to plan on racing the next Starvation Ridge race the end of June. You gonna make it?

hey guys, this is like a trip down memory lane. I raced Millican in '87,'88,'89 in the Sportsman Class. Prior to that, I was Joe Copening's crew chief on his class 4 Dodge pickup. I even painted it once. If my memory serves me correctly, "Rick's" Bronco was Chevrolet powered when he ran the '85 Mint 400. He got a sponsorship from General Tire, and had to borrow spares from Bob and Cindy to go on. It was somewhat innovative at the time, as it had 3" wide leaf springs on the front. Phil's always had a canted rearward rollcage bar, and he raced Baja several times. Don't know what ever happened to it. When Joe quit racing his Dodge, he cut it up and scrapped it. He and Dave Owen ran it at the Mint 400 in '86. Came in 5th in class. I saw my old Bronco at the Portland October swapmeet about 5 years ago, and there had been a number of odd changes made to it. I had a lot of fun in that rig. Anyone know what ever happened to Rod Stevens' yellow Bronco? Where are the races being held these days, I haven't kept up. Apparently Pro Can-Am went the way of the goony bird? Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Greg Peters

Gordon, Paul Peters and I went to the Mint a couple months ago and we've met Phil there the last couple of years on his way home from being a snowbird. Rod always shows up. He alternates between PDO, Prineville, and Phoenix. He still has his equipment business and I think he got his old Bronco back. Bob and Cindy turn up at the Mint once in awhile, after checking their property somewhere in AZ. They're living in Crooked River now. I went down to Paisley last month, along with some guys from Springfield/EGO, who are trying to get a June 400 mile race started. We kind of just went out on the proposed 100 mile loop to see how it was. Will be a great course, and lots of alternates for the future. Fell through for this year, but they have high hopes for the future.

I've been curious what has happened to all of those guys. I see Bob and Cindy occasionally, and Nancy and I intend to visit them in Arizona in the future. Nice to hear about Rod still "being Rod". He was fun to race with at Playdays, let alone a great competitor in the desert. I haven't spoke to Fred Ankeny in some time, but I understand he still keeps the boys in line at A n T Tire in North Portland. What a great guy. Nice to hear about Phil also. Great to hear Gordon is doing well, also. Great to hear from/about everyone. Thanks again, Greg
