View Full Version : Chupakabras goes 7s for CODE race.
We been planing to race this event for some time now, but CODE doesn´t have class 3 and our chances in class 18 (Open Truck) where very slim.
Two weeks ago most off the 7s guys allowed us to race against them, great... we had a race date, and oh man we had FUN, FUN, FUN!!!!!!
First, one of our goals was to promote CLASS 3 and left the 302 numbers on the sides, at tech we were asked to remove them to ovoid confusing the race spotters and time keepers....

Our first CODE race sticker!!!

The Chupakabras looked kind of weird without 300´s numbers.....
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z249/tioernesto_2007/DSC_0497.jpg
Alex and Carlos finished the 3 laps of the first heat in second place 18 minutes behind first place, had to replace busted fuel pump:mad:
The little explorer that could, manage to keep up with the 7s trucks pace, well, most of them, as we were one of the two cars to finish the first heat, hehehe.
Heat 2 was chupas turn to drive and mine to co-dog for him, first time since the 03 BAJA1000.... the plan was to play it conservative, all we had to do was finish the heat to secure second place.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z249/tioernesto_2007/DSC_0056.jpg
It took just a few turns to get in sync and from then on it was a fun race, how much fun? the GPS said 70mph every time we hit this little drop that send the explorer flying.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z249/tioernesto_2007/jacume_33.jpg
To the end of the first lap something broke and was bagging in the back..... stop, got out, quick check, nothing is lose on the suspension, as i got up i notice the aluminum jack is missing from its base and nowhere in site, lost a little time.
In the second lap we got to the 4 mile stretch of hard pack strait away and chupas said, "lets see what this mother can do" (badly translated) and hit the gas, soon we were going 81+ mph and had to back down as we went flying off the top of a downhill and bouncing on a berm in the middle of it, scary in a SWB, hehe.
Will continue third lap later, here´s a preview of the finnish line jump.

I've heard the first place 7s was not a real 7s, so, in my book, it's a!st place for the chupakabras team:).
Action shots look awesome!
Finally got rid of those tranny gremlins.

congrats guys, thanks for the chase number as well!! its funny you guys lost your jack, we lost ours and we all figured out that losing our jack is the reason we rolled the truck again. we lost it once at the 500 0f 06, and we rolled the truck shortly after, then this last race we lost it right at the beginning of heat 2, (i saw the jack on the truck between 1 and 2) and we rolled it not to long after. so we decided to weld the damn thing to the truck and just keep a spare inside the cab that way we dont roll the truck anymore. by the way, did anyone find our long lost jack? its spray painted gloss black and has a few of our Racing 905 stickers on it? it was leaking oil also. let me know, because we want to hang it on our wall...

there is no way in hell that thing has a little 4 banger in it, its gotta be the 3.4 or the new 4.0.
I heard after the race at the awards ceremony that one of the 7s trucks had a built motor but it was still cleared by tech. any info on that?

i really don't know that, we went throug tech inspection and they did check our engine,. so, i want to believe the did the same on that other truck,. so, i don't know if this was your first time to do a CODE race,. well, it was our first, but, my point is, that here are more flexible about applying the rule book,. i dont know, i think you can protest but you have to doit before the race, i heard that the guys who won are from tecate,. that's the only thing i know, but well, will try to find more info about that truck,. see yahh..
ps, that truck had a goooood engine,. just look at the video,. i floor it when i pass them, and still there, they went by us like if we were not accelerating at all,.
ps2, haha, our explorer don't have a good engine, completely stock,. originally comes with 150hp, i think right know we are about 80% of that,. our suspension package its what have let us go "faster", its all about shock valving, not just coilovers, :D

that truck is most likely lighter as well. no this isnt my first code run, I know code and MDR really dont go by score rules, they base their inspections off of score but they just make sure you have all the safety equipment and for the most part they couldnt care less...

see what I mean? IF Im going to go through all the headache to do a swap im going to just put a v8 in there.
but for now, Im keeping the 2.9. Im building the new block as we speak...
nothing to crazy. Im still UNDER the cost of a used SOHC 4.0.
only issue im having at the moment is finding an intake manifold that will carry a Holley 650cfm dominator carb.
