Well maybe I'll hit you guys up at superstition than. Have you heard about the new format down there? I guess they're splitting the slower classes from the faster ones and running at different times.

Yes. I heard it will be more organized. Now the little guy's won't worry about the big guy's while they are racing. I am looking forward to it.
Copied off of MDR

It looks like I'm going to try to make this race as a spectator! I'll help out whoever I can!
My daughter's b-day party is on the same day, but I'm free at 2:30-3:00; so assuming I can find a cheap date, I'll be there in time for the driver's meeting.
I'll be wearing a Class 3 Cup shirt... come find me and I'll buy you a beer (or at least give you one out of my cooler!). :D:D:D

Is the rock-pile easy to find? Anyway, I'm stopping to look at a 93 Bronco for sale, but should be there by the 6:00 or so for the drivers meeting, find the two class 3 entries, and then take in the race!! (helping if needed, but otherwise drinking beer!)

Yeah it's really easy. You just continue following the course past the start/finish line - you'll know it when you get there. We're going to try to camp by the last rock out cropping on the far left of the group.

It will make it eaiser to recognize each other & hopefully keep the interest in the class, seen by who ever else see you wearing them.

I'll be in a baja-prepped Nisan Altima. It's bad-Azz.
Well, ok, it's not, but it gets 30 miles to the gallon!
Can I make it to the rock pile in a jap car?
Otherwise I'd be stuck driving something that gets 10 miles to the gallon (on a good day). No thanks (I'm coming from Ventura).
I plan on attending the drivers meeting at 6:00 to see what MDR and this Patricia person are all about. I read some interesting stuff elsewhere

From what I recall, if you are careful, you can get the Nissan to just about any of the course access points out there, including the rock pile. Should be no problem. I have seen guys land airplanes out there.

Well we scraped a few times... but I don't think we are leaking oil - ha ha!
Great time, but very short time. I have to tell ya, these 1450 boys are really getting fast. That section called the rock pile is a totally fun place to watch... especially at night.
There was quite a party going on! It was like old-school spectating used to be! I thought there would be 20 or 30 people hanging around and I'd find any Class 3 enthusiasts easy. NOT!!! HOLY cow there was a lot of people.
I missed the drivers meeting, so I can't address any of the concerns I'd heard about the promoter.
The rest of the race seemed to go well. I'll let Cervantes and Gerry comment on their races.
All in all, I had a blast, but night races are pretty taxing... I don't know when we got to sleep, but woke up tired and bit fuzzy!!

I had a good time. I spent a lot more time just hanging out with my buddies then actually watching the race though. We watched everyone come through on the first lap through the rock pile but then walked back towards our camp and watched from a far.
I don't have any pics to contribute but there's a ton of em here:

For Sal, this was his 1st DNF due to mechanical issues. On te first lap they had a fuel line issue around mile 36 and around mile 9 of their 2nd lap the oil pan welds gave way and it was over just that quick. At least the class 3 guys put on a little show at the take off for everyone in the pits. Ken,(nice to have met you and Lara in person) Thanks for helping out with the recovery of the Bronco and I know it was "Real" special for you to be able to back out the H1 for me at the pits, so you can't say I didn't let you drive it ;)
And I won't mention the light covers blunder, who knew they made clear covers right????? I think that all folks for Sals racing this year, time is going to be too tight to get the Bronco up and going again since we have to prep my car for my race in October. Thanks again for everyone who came out in support.

What exactly broke? Is the engine toast?

Sal thought he had a hole in the oil pan at first, but upon further inspection back at the pits it was found that the oil was coming from the welds in the oil pan. We really don't think the engine is gone, but we can't be sure till we get at it. I think Sal said it stalled, they thought it was the fuel issue again, got down from the truck and found the oil leaking in the front,up to that very point the oil pressure was normal. There was still alot of oil draining out afterwards,so we are hopeful it is not a complete loss. Here are a couple of more pics.

I would have to guess (it's just a guess)... that the amount of oil still draining was a good sign. I was a little surprised it was still draining a bit when we arived on-site. It's probably a really good thing they stalled it when the did... got out and saw the leak - then called it quits. Chalk up the mileage to testing and go race again!! :D:D:D
