So, you all have been asking me to start a build thread. so here we go.
I bought her off of a friend of mine back in 06, for $400. His brother owned it before him and rarely maintained it. when I bought it, it was not running. it had been sitting at the top of his property for 2 years rotting in the sun with the same fuel. turned out all it needed was a battery (It sure pissed him off when I told him thats all it was).
When I first bought her, she was stone stock. with a faded and rusted powder blue and white 2 tone. It took me few months to get the tires, fenders, and exhaust but I finally got to a point where I was happy driving her around. Heres a couple pics of that point.

http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i161/Chadster689/DSC00095.jpg
She was pretty quick in the dirt for being stock and I could do about 19 through the washboards out at plaster city. but then I started to get tired of hearing the back tires rubbing at full compression, so I decided to park her until I could buy rear fenders. This was all during the same year.
I also decided to get rid of the front conversion I did and send her back to 1986. so I sold the fenders. then my insurance bill came up and the money I got for selling the fenders I had to use for that. So here is a pic of where I am right now on the truck.
http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i161/Chadster689/DSC00291.jpg
As you can see it looks like hell, but after this friday I should be able to make a Huge dent in the project, Ive got a guy bringing some fenders down that are for the 86. I just bought a couple more lights to stick in place of the POS square lights. and I have 90% of the materials needed for my rear fenders.

So while I was gone at the Code race down in Jacume, some jackass decided to break into my truck. They stole my stereo, the speakers, my intake and my exhaust.

I Had sarted caging the truck before everything was sold/stolen but I had to hold off due to all my bills coming in on the same month.. Here is where Im at...
This is How it is mounted in the back. Its temporary until I get the rear bumper built, I plan to have it bolted to the frame, not just a body mount.
that cross bar isnt welded all around yet because I have to move it up when I go to start mounting the spares. its only there for support at the moment

http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i161/Chadster689/DSC00295.jpg
This Is how the main hoop is mounted at the moment. Im using doubler plates, they are bolted in with 4 half inch bolts. the bottom plate is going to have a support tube going to the front leaf spring mount. but I waited on that until I have the 2 link setup finished. not too far off, just need heims...

Not Score. Score wants ALL chromoly (how do you spell??) now. But, Ill never have enough cash to cover the entrance fees for score. I had it checked out by a tech at MDR and he said it was cool. Plus, Code and MDR are alot more fun for me anyhow and MDR is way more family oriented.
In case you were wondering, that cage is NO WHERE near being finished. its only like 30% done, if that. Ive got a LONGGG way to go.. but it should be legal by October...
did you do the fab work on the cage?

That blows! Of all the things to steal....Exhaust?? I've got an ammusing story about something similar. There is a small dealer locally that had 29 cars vandalized. Someone came during the night and cut all the cat's out:eek:. Platinum prices are pretty high right now.

everything that has been done on the truck has been done by me.
considering Im only 19, Id say its halfway decent. It could be much better though.
Ill have some good action shots after this monday. I just got all my fiberglass weave in, Im going to pick up a couple gallons of resin to start off and Im going to try and make a dent in my rear fenders by this weekend. I bought the fronts, the guy is bringing them on Monday.
A couple of my friends and I were out in otay a few weeks ago and found some sweet little trails that go allllll the way to campo. it pretty much covers everything, flat windy dirt trails, washboards, sand washes, and a few hills that are all boulders. Its incredible. Its all government property, but I called the border patrol about it and they told me over the phone that because Im not that close to the border, they dont really care.
So monday afternoon, or tuesday Ill give you guys some better updates...

Yeah, I dont mind at all. the biggest thing would be that Id have to pay my boss to use the bender, notcher, the welder, and all the grinding wheels and welding wire. He doesnt care if Im doing something for myself, but if I make any type of profit off the stuff, he wants $$$. I got called in to work for a couple hours so Ill be off at about 3-4. I can swing by.
maybe we can work some kind of trade thing out because I need fiberglass resin. i think thats what Ill tell my boss...
Cages are pricey, especially if you go with DOM or chromoly.Mild steel is around 40 bucks a stick (1stick=20feet) Dom is almost 70 bucks a stick, and chromoly is just under 100. its ridiculous and thats only 1.75/.120 wall. So the cost would be that, and what my boss will charge me for the supplies.
Ill talk to you more about it when I head over there...

UPDATE!!!
I got all the foam for the rear fenders, started shaping the drivers side plug. holy hellballs, this sucks. Im trying to hunt down my camera so I can get a few pics of this thing. its very tedious work at this point, I have the general form I want, now Im going over and over to shape it exactly how I want.
BTW, DO NOT USE "GREAT STUFF" EXPANDING FOAM. It doesnt sand for crap and it doesnt dry hard enough to cut smoothly.
I also went and bought a gallon of BONDO! and 2.5 gallons of plaster for the "fine tuning" of the shape and crapola. Im going to hit it with a 325 grit dry paper to take it down, then wet sand it with 400, 800, then 1200 grit and throw some clear coat on so the release agent doesnt soak into the plaster being that its porous. and then start glassing to make the mold.
COPYKAT- dude Ive got some mad respect for you man, shaping these things is a pain in the neck. especially cutting that body line out.
Hey Tim, Once I get this plug all said and done do you mind if I bring it by your shop? I need a professionals opinion on it before I hit it with glass.
side note- I picked up 8 different spools of wire( 10-12-14-and 16 gauge.) I started wiring most of the truck, taillights, Dustlamp, all the wiring for the switches and breakers. Unfortunately I cant run the wiring for the gauges until I get some. those things are pricey... Ill have pics up in a few hours...

I went primarily with nordskog and couldn't be happier. I can't remember if i posted any pics of them so here there are:

Oil pressure, engine and tranny temp. The temp gauges have a memory recall feature that allows you to see the hottest it's gotten. I believe you can also program them to send a signal (dummy light or fan, etc) at a certain temp.

Not that bad. They are more maintenance when young. Once they start walking and talking it's a riot. The stuff you can teach them is overwelming as they just absorb all of it and can handle more.
A baby monitor is a handy tool to have in the shop. I got so much done on my truck when the little guy was sleeping. There were alot of late nights. At that time my wife was working nights so I was looking after the tike.

I was driving her back home that night and we were having a really long talk about the whole thing, and out of no where she says that its not working out anymore. I was going to marry her too. Oh well, at least Ive got my truck to fallback on! :D
I shaped out some Louvers on the hood, along with a subtle scoop in the center all for cooling purposes. Still looks bitchin though....

I did "cover up", thats why I was confused as hell..
The truck is down at the shop now, EVERYTHING is being torn out and built up. Im still going through and consolidating all the wiring. Running everything into the cab, I picked up another sponsor too!!! West Auto wrecking!!!
Im hauling a$$ trying to finish this thing. But on my Days off of work at the day job, they call me in and I lose my whole day...
The hood is/was the stock hood, shaped out the louvers, and scoop and now Im just wet sanding. The hood is probably going to look the best out of the set, mainly because I know it may not get as damaged as the fenders. I still need shocks........

Also, my buddy brought me some spare tires today. Hes going to trade me for some work on his truck (superrr easy) The tires and Rims are like brand new and he straight up gave em to me...
All the stock stuff I pulled out is for sale/trade too. I have the fuel tank with sending unit and outgoing and return lines+ charcoal canister. trade for some gauges maybe? ALLLL the interior, the lift gate and all the glass except for the front windshield. , all the A/c and heater components and wiring, stock shocks, stock radius arm x-member, (possibly stock radius arms also, but I might keep them to make a spare set) stock front and rear bumpers and the factory fuel tank x-members.
Ill post in the classifieds too. But Im looking to trade for a set of highback seats. Can be worn, just need them sooooon. Or any other cool stuff ya got. lemme know...

I didnt make it down to the shop today But went from like phase one to phase four in about 2 hours. I picked up a One piece fiberglass front clip it converts to a 98-07 front end with a 98-00 grill and the quarter panels. I picked up a set of 6" lift springs also picked up another 2 spare tires. I have a total of 4 spares...
on a side note, I had to scrap the rear fenders I was making. I couldnt shape the expanding foam in a can junk very well and it wasnt working out. talk about a waste of time.
I still need SHOCKS seats, Harness', dustlamps, 2 fire extinguishers, guages, some more switches, 2 heims for the radius Arms, I have to make the lift shackles in the rear, and run all the feed and return lines for the fuel cell and tranny cooler. tons of junk to do but I still have planty of time...

:(:(:(:(
Well that sucks. With the expanding foam you need filler to make it smooth. Also High speed sander works. A sanding disk on an angle grinder would have worked out. Were you planning to make a mold? or one off like mine?
That's the reason I bulked mine with the polystyrene. It's so easy to work with. Most of the shape was cut with a saw and the rest was fine tuned with 40 grit paper on a board.
Ckrue689
09-22-2008, 09:41 PM
I wasnt using polystyrene. It was too soft of a foam though, I was Literally using just my hand to sand it in most spots. it actually worked!
anyway, Im going to try again. maybe next week. Probably just do something like yours for this race and If I dont break down, Ill make some sexy looking ones that go along with the one piece a little better...

Are you sure for MDR? is 307 taken now or Im just not allowed to run it?
And yeah copykat, I decided to just get the conversion clip, I saw that exact picture and I wanted it on my truck. Its even better because its 1 piece. I love it.
someone stole my camera or something, its gone. I have my fuel cell mounted the way its supposed to. But I didnt sink it way down below the frame rails, you guys are going to flip out when you see how my whole rear end design came out.
I got my dust lamps, brake lamps and the stupid blue one that means Im slow. They are 4 inch round LED's lamps. Race Ready products down here in chula vista sells a crappier version for 27.99 I got mine for 14.95 each. Brand new and more durable than Race ready...I found some PRP seats for 200 bucks, but im out od cash.. That all I needed besides a couple guages! I have everything else and Im out of money.. I hate it when that happens.

I've never heard of being able to reserve your number in Off Road?
Unlike how I got number 306 for the year doing AutoCross. :D

Almost every series except for SCORE issues you a number for the entire season.
Well, what i meant to say is that a race # will be issued to you according to the starting position you draw for that particular event, and the only # you can keep for the hole season is the 300, but wont get that one in a drawing, hehe.
301 for first starter
302 for second starter and sow on...
349 for first rear start (explained somewhere else on the forum).

This is still confusing the hell out of me. On our 7 truck, We have a choice of what number we want to use. Im not that familiar with MDR rules being that they dont have any text on what they actually are. So, Im going to be #300? since I seriously doubt anyone else is entering.
Anyway, I was supposed to be at the shop this morning at like 8:00 and I overslept til 11:00.. anyway, back to the shop..

I know, I thought I said that? I dont want to be 300, 301, 302 or any of that. I want to be 307. You guys are confusing me to high hell...
CAN I BE # 307 OR NOT. that is the question.. I need to know because thats what I had my graphics guy start making. I need to be able to change it before he goes and makes them.
As far as updates, the stock harness has been gone through and gone through and gone through. Its all wrapped and zip tied to the firewall, Im going to run this until I can get an MSD or have the ECU reflashed. I still have to extend all the plugs for the sensors. should have her up and running tomorrow.

not with score,. you don't chose the number,. you enter the draw and then you get your number assign depending on the draw,. so, you have to wait till that to get your number,. as i said, that with score,. i don't know with others..

Ive barely even made a dent in the last few weeks... Actually, I take that back I broke the front windshield on the truck when it was in the shop today. I had my fiberglass and all my spares and a bunch of other parts up on a rack close to the ceiling at the shop(about 15 feet up) I dont know what I did but i was trying to get the new exhaust and I fell along with EVERYTHING ELSE on top of my truck right onto the windshield. Ive still got glass coming out of my ass.. but seriously it hurt. so that set me back a couple hours...
Other than the mishap, this whole thing is getting slow..

Wow-close call. Glad your ok.
So are you planning on running with mdr for the full season? I ask because (if you haven't heard) there's a new series starting up in plaster city this year.
Their first race is January 17th i think and it's really sounding like it's going to be a great promoter to run with.
May be worth looking into.

Well, I may have to do that. I am for sure running the MDR race on DECEMBER 31ST out at plaster, but this race came up on me too fast and there is still alot to do. Plus I fried the ECU on the bronco. Dont ask me how or why because I couldnt tell you. Either way, I ordered a new standalone EMS for it that should be much more promising and not to mention free up any and all hidden horses in the new motor... plus it gives me the time to get the suspension built and dialed in properly rather than just rushing everything.........

I know I just posted this, but Im back on for the race. I was going to back out because I didnt have sufficient help. I made a few calls and told em what was up and now Ive got alot more support.
Turns out Im still an idiot though, I butchered a perfectly decent wire harness and now I get to buy a new one. My stubbornness is beginning to get a little costly...
Made a MASSIVE dent in the whole project today, got the a-pillars and all the necessary gussets for the cage completed, still need to get the motor cage finished and tie it in to the front bumper fuel cell is now strapped down but I need a small in line pump to get the fuel from the cell to the high pressure pump on the frame rail..
ALLL the glass is finally out, If anyone wants the rear windows and hatch, throw me an offer. I have all the stock parts up for grabs too.. open to trades too...
If I get the rest of the cage done tomorrow, Ill still be in business..
has anyone found any deals on some bedsides for a b2 lately??

If I was close I'd help out for sure but unfortunatly 2100+ miles separate us.
No bedsides to speek of. If I had a couple of guys (3 maybe 4) lined up for them and sent me cash I could make a splash of mine and make a couple of parts. But in order to break even I would have to charge more than material cost, of cource. I'm thinking I could make a decent splash, and brace it enough to get a couple parts off of it, for about $200/pr. Then the parts off of that would be nearly the same price. It would still be cheaper than Perry's price but mine won't be in gelcoat. And then there is shipping on top of that.
That would mean I'd need to sell two sets atleast @ $300+ shipping. The more guys in the lower the price would be. ;)

Thats in my budget.. Your not open tomorrow are you?
On a side note: I picked up another BII as a daily driver. Its from a buddy of mine I work with at the shop, the body is a little rough, but damnnn is that interior clean. The motor was rebuilt and has 1500 miles, New clutch, 4" lift with rad. arms and the rear springs were re-arched to give about a 3 inch lift.
Its 2 wheel drive, but Im not going to butcher it like my first one. Just build some extended beams w/D44 hubs and an 8.8 out of an F150 with a 4.56 and a posi..
Hes giving it to me for 300, Hes also letting me pay him after the race and make payments instead of one big chunk.
As far as the beast and 1/2, the cage is done. I cant snap any pics with my camera. I will use my boss's tomorrow when I head down to the shop so you guys can drool. or cry....

I'll be running her for sure at the fud on new years. there were to many little things to wrap up and not enough time, I had to stop at the beginning of the week to prep our class 7, but progress will continue the day after this race..
On another note, Im going to be in pheonix the day of the race. The XDL show is saturday along with the HIN (hot import nights). Both of these are a HUGE part of our business and unfortunately I cannot miss them. But I'll be there all day friday prerunning and playing, and Ill be there saturday for the start but Ill be leaving shortly afterwards...

UPDATE: there aren't many. The second bronco I picked up as a prerunner is done, I swerved to avoid some idiot grandma who doesnt know how to read the speed limit, veered over into a ditch on Industrial Ave. in Chula Vista right next to the Palm avenue stop and the Driving range. I was doing about 40 when I lost it, caught an edge and went over about 3 times and ended on its lid. HERES THE KICKER, I didnt have my seatbelt on. Only injuries were a golfball sized lump on the back of my head, and three 1/4 inch cuts from when I broke the window to climb out... the frames straight, suspension is good, that'll be the donor for the Race truck...Thats all, my new fiance is taking up the remainder of my time, and Im lovin it! haha.. more updates within this week,...later.

Wow.. Im finally back after what seems like forever. I missed this forum! Well I suppose an update is past due but here goes. The so-called donor bronco that was totalled has since been sold (went for more than I paid for it lol). The B2 is still alive and kicking, well in a manner of speaking.. an idea came about to try and squeeze a 5.0 in between the rails and run a t-45 with an offroad kit instead of the 2.9 w/ auto. The a4ld was rebuilt and ive just been plagued with problems ever since. I sort of disappeared last year because Ive been racing class 5-1600 with my father in laws team The Negrete Boys and also with Racing 905 in class 7. We managed to take 2nd in points for mdr in class, 3rd overrall. Ive been seeing tnt Tim and his wife everywhere covering all the events, hes a great guy and i was pretty surprised how well my father in law knew him.
I unfortunately do not have pictures of whats been going on lately on hand at this moment, but I promise to update later today. I uploaded everything to an external hd, so no later than today.. Man I just realized whattime it was. My wife would beat me (jk) if she knew how late I was awake! I suppose a flat screen and bruce lee movies dont help much, but its friday.. As long as the garage is clean tomorrow Im good! Well Ill tty guys soon.

I know Rory, i guess i just forgot to mention that.. We decided on going with a sohc 4.0 with a set of crower cams and supertech valves, springs and retainers.. Ill be reworking the heads going with a slightly more aggressive port job, port match everything, and then to top everything just a set of phenolic mani spacers port the runners on the upper mani, set of headers, and im debating on running just a ported stock tb or going oversized. I dont know off the top of my head and im too tired to look but does anyone the stock 4.0 tb size? i would guess between 55-60mm? overall i just want this thing breathing well and when we do race it I dont want to be limited to just a 1450 class. the bottom end will stay stock for now, the block has pretty low miles.
Oh and chupas if you read this what manual trans were u running on the exploder before that C4? Ive been told either to go with a t-5 or a t-45 out of a mustang with an offroad kit. I know the t45's are awesome trannies, same tranny is in my fiances mustang, but anyone know how well they hold up to off road abuse?

That 1450 taco isnt really related to the shop hes a customer and we did all the fab work on that truck, owners name is Kyle Bonamo. He's still kind of a squid but hes really starting to shine lately.. As far as the bronco I think I meant to say that I am still building a class 3, but my lady and I were tossing around the idea of going balls out on it. ie 4 link, centermount A arms up front, v8 and all the bells and whistles. But then I reconsidered 'cause class 3 is better :D you get a better "feel" of the course with limited suspension... lol anyway's I found a set of Dana35 beams for relatively cheap Im just looking for a 9" diff for the rear and we are going to set up a 2 link system with some nationals, now I just need the nationals haha.. btw the 4.0 is going to be built properly and according to score specs..
