Here goes:

As many of you recall, I announced a while back that a friend of mine and me had agreed to race the 2010 Baja 500. It's amazing how things begin to change once a specific commitment is made. Shortly after the announcement, I was offered a great opportunity to join another race team and drive. I was awestruck and jumped at the chance, but after alot of heavy thinking I decided that regardless of how successful the program was, it wasn't aligned with how I envisioned entering the sport. It put me a little too far outside of my comfort zone, being a rookie. Not to mention it deviated from the personal commitment that I made with Dale, my co-conspiritor and family friend.

So, as difficult as it was, I decided to back down as an active participant in the team's C3 effort. It didn't feel right when I was involved and it felt worse when I walked away. I couldn't put my finger on why I needed to do that at the time, but in my heart I knew it was the right choice. A few days later, my brother in law called and asked if Carmen and I had a few minutes to talk. He and my sister came over, we sat down and Richard begins to spew out words I would have never in a million years have thought I would hear coming out of his mouth. They had been talking for some time and decided that they wanted to go 50/50 on a Class 3 race program with us. I was shocked and excited all over again. The best part is, he wants to be the crew chief and race coordinator, handle logistics etc. That makes me the DOR!!

We talked for a while about a timeline and priorities, both for the families and the build. Neither of us has 30-50k sitting in a disposable account to get the rig built, so we're going to take it one step at a time. It's going to be a budget build, but it's going to be done right. The goal is to have the rolling chassis completed by December '09. That doesn't sound like much, but that's the majority of the work and expense when considering all of the components required to design and build it correctly.

A few days go by after our initial conversation and the excitement is growing. Or should I say anxiety. Anyhow, I get a call from C3R's very own Nick (Brokenbronco). After talking about the new race effort for a bit he says "hey listen, I want to donate my old Bronco for the race rig". I couldn't have been more excited! I didn't know what to say, so I babbled and basically said nothing constructive for a few minutes. Awesome! was the word of the day. Ha! So anyway, last weekend before heading out to the Expo, Richard and I snagged a trailer from a generous friend and made some room in Nick's driveway. Nick, you're awesome man!!

Right now the Bronco is sitting at my dad's shop in the high desert. I'm going to haul the travel trailer, my welder, plasma, bender, etc. up there and get busy with the build. Richard has a fabricator friend that is going to give us a hand from time to time. Can't wait to tear it apart, get it stripped and cleaned and begin boxing the frame. We're working with Beard to get a set of Ultra T1's with some custom stitching. That's just one of many components we need before we begin doing the cagework. I'll post many pictures and keep a running list of all individuals and businesses who contribute to the program at the top of this page.

Can't wait to be out there with you guys.

Thanks for the support guys.

Chris - You need to be racing against me, not with me. Ha! Let's see who can finish their build first.

We made good progress today and that was the end result. Man I'm tired! I've got a bunch of pictures to sort through that I'll post a few of later.

So its completely striped down huh?

Sure is. Now it gets really interesting. Ha!

OK. Here's a few pictures of the baddest Class 3 Bronco you've ever seen. OK, well, maybe not.

We picked it up from Nick's house 2 weeks ago. The poor thing bled all over Nick's driveway, but we got it on the trailer despite the resistance.

From there we were headed to the Expo for a few hours and then up to the Bronco's new home at my dad's place in Phelan. The next few shots show that we too have a little redneck in us. It was interesting getting the rig off of the trailer, to say the least.

What's a tractor for anyway?

Does this look precarious? I'm sure it does, but nothing was damaged, scratched or dented during this technically advanced maneuver.

One end off, all most there.

My dad and his favorite tool.

Bart blesses the new project.

Fast forward to today. The teardown begins.

Now, we're no windshield removal experts, but this thing was a PITA. We tried to stomp it out. We tried a windshield removal knife. We tried heat. Everything! But we finally got it.

This is Richard, my brother in law, getting ready to give it a whack.
http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/680568/fullsize/race-bronco-038.jpg

Taking it easy.

Got it!
http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/680571/fullsize/race-bronco-054.jpg

So we got the the rest of the interior gutted and began separating the body from the frame.

And there it sits in all it's glory. Sorry Nick. It looks bad today, but one day you'll be proud.

Dad always likes it clean. I have to say that Richard and I are both very grateful that he's allowing us to use his shop for the build.
http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/680548/fullsize/img_1129.jpg

Once it was all apart, it was time to pressure wash the frame and body.

http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/680555/fullsize/img_1142.jpg

We achieved our goal for the day and got the frame into the shop. Next trip we're going to remove all of the rivets and strip the frame to prepare it for fabrication. We haven't decided whether or not to box the frame. IMO, with a properly built cage it's unnecessary and would add undesirable weight, but Richard and I want to research a bit before we make a decision.

uh... ya. I'd call that "full on"!! wow.

I don't happen to have a tractor here. Looks like a GREAT start. From what I've seen of your other work Yikes, this thing will be top notch. Wish you were closer so I could come over and drink your beer... oops, I mean "help"... he he.

Looks like the start of a good build yikes!

My truck was in the exact same spot 1 1/2 years ago....take your time on it, it will be worth all the hard work.

If you are ever looking for inspiration there is a complete build up on the jeepspeed site of my truck, start to finish. I know looking at other project help motivate me to finish mine.

As for 'boxing in the whole frame', I dont think it is necessary if done right, i've seen some really well built old broncos and f150's that did not. It is important to build a bridge inside the channel where your cage attaches to the top. Or maybe cut a whole in the top of the frame, pass your tube through the top of the frame and weld it top and bottom. Just a thought.

Thanks for the good words and advice Jon . I actually watched your build progress from RDC or Pirate or somewhere. I really like your work and yes, it is inspiring. If mine ends up at that level I'll be very pleased. I hope you stick around in C3. Dave Moore is soon to complete his new, very cool and potentially very fast C3 Bronco. The competition could get fierce between your Jeep, Dave's TTB rig and Moss'.
