Is it true that part of the race will be north of Vegas? And like the good old days with the rock garden?

Boy, "cheap" and "axles" are two words that can't be used in the same sentence! It is unfortunate that we can't use circle track stuff, because that stuff is pretty reasonable. (Just too small) I got lucky once and called Sandy Cone and he had just what I needed on the shelf. Somebody had ordered it and never picked it up. It was a little rusty, but did the job. Then the drive plate broke and it fell out somewhere on the highway in Mexico. The next one wasn't so cheap! What spline count are you using? I am assuming a full floater? Who have you checked with so far?

We enjoyed the Mint race this year. I have heard that it will be north of Vegas, using some of the old course from years ago.

[i] don't want to hijack the thread , but right now all we got are the stock axles that are essentially shot. We'd like to run 35 or 40 spline axles, would love to run a FF. I've checked with almost everyone on the market. Seems that a built semi-floater will run around the 3,500 mark and a FF is around 6500 almost universally. I've looked in to rebuilding our current axles ourselves and it ends up being close to having Currie build one when its all said and done. I've talked with Schriener enterprises and they said they could do a FF for around 4000. We're considering going with a Currie SF 9" just so we can get racing ASAP. I would love to know what the "budget builders" are using.

Anyway, If we could get the axles finished we'd be all set for the MINT

OK who has a cool Mint 400 story? Back around 1980 when the course went thru the Nellis Dunes, I pulled out a school bus that was stuck in the dunes. How they got that out there, better yet, why they got that out there is beyond me.Another one.Came across a car stuck in the dunes.Buried to the frame.Driver at the wheel, passed out.The car was floored. His buddy was trying to dig out the rear wheels with the tire spinning 10 million revs.He was digging with his hands, and had not lost any fingers yet!
One year,in the 80s the wind blew so hard, they almost shut down the race. They did shut down I-15 because of the dust.Visibility on the dry lake near Boulder City was about zero. This was back in the day when you could drive anywhere you wanted. We followed the course from Jean over the mountain towards Boulder City. Can't do that anymore!

Actually, they DID shorten that race due to safety concerns. It was, as I recall, the only time that had ever happened. I was there with my dad and Mike Coleman, in the back of his 77 blue ford pre-runner that only ran on av-gas. This 302 had some un-godly compression. We had to stop at the airport every time we took it out. They would pass the gas hose through the fence to us, I'm totally serious. I remember thinking how bad that 40 bucks hurt every time we got gas!!

The winds that day blew 88 miles an hour. We had a keg, and somewhere I have pictures of that. I will try to dig them out. The race cars coming through the pits couldn't even find the course, or their pit. We had cars going past us on both sides (no GPS back then, obviously). The officials shortened the race by a lap, I believe, and didn't let anyone start the last lap (again...blurry memory, but I do recall something about it being the only time in history this had happened).

For those of you who missed it last year... After going 400 miles in the Mint, we parked my truck in the pits and celebrated the finish... a 3rd, but a nice finish. When my dad started the car in the morning, the throttle cable snapped immediately. We came SO close to being stucked in wind and cold and dust and darkness. I suppose the old shoe string trick would have been next - ha ha.

I just got off the phone with the Moapa Tribal Council Chairman concerning one more reconnaissance run. I told him I would facilitate this request. I need 5 or 6 four-seaters for this event. I would ask our membership and racers for their help. Please contact me to get involved and on the list. The tentative date for this event is January 24 2009. This event was successful for Council and now we are assisting cultural and administrative. This is very important to the well being of the MINT 400. I appreciate those that helped on the last one. If your are able please help SNORE again. Please RSVP dwall1618@yahoo.com (http://us.mc332.mail.yahoo.com/mc/compose?to=dwall1618@yahoo.com) to register.

09 General Tire Mint 400 Tech/Contingency Inspection
Expanded thru the Fremont Street Experience

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

The General Tire Mint 400 off-road race, which returned after a 21-year hiatus last year, will be back bigger and better than ever complete with Tech/Contingency Inspection Friday, March 27 utilizing the Fremont Street Experience in its entirety from Main Street to Eighth Street, as well as the Fremont East Entertainment District, after being held only on Fremont East in 2008.
Presented by the Southern Nevada Off Road Enthusiasts (SNORE), Tech/Contingency Inspection of vehicles entered in the event will line up from Main Street to Eighth Street under the world-renowned Fremont Street Experience Canopy, according to SNORE Contingency Director Jamie Fagan. The expansion of Tech/Contingency Inspection will now include the entire length of the Fremont Street Experience canopy, which has been heralded world-wide for its colorful presentations, as well as will cross over Las Vegas Boulevard and include the Fremont Street Entertainment District. “This is an incredible opportunity for the City of Las Vegas, the people of Las Vegas and businesses located in the downtown corridor, as this is an event that has been recognized throughout the world in years past. I am very proud to be working with the City of Las Vegas government and municipalities, our Mayor and the properties located along the Fremont Street corridor in getting this event off the ground and to be a part of history once again in the making. I can’t thank everyone enough for their unyielding support and trust throughout this incredible journey and history lesson,” said Ms. Fagan.
Additionally, the world’s oldest off-road race will be run Saturday, March 28 northeast of Las Vegas on the grounds of the old Mint 400 with the start/finish line located in the vicinity of the Fireworks stand/plaza on the Moapa Indian Reservation about 8 miles west of Glendale, NV, near State Route 168 and I-15.
“Tech Inspection is back where it belongs,” said K.J. Howe, who was the event’s Race Director beginning in 1973. “In its heyday, the Mint 400 Tech Inspection was so popular that kids were even cutting school to gather on Fremont Street and I think the latest development will generate the same enthusiasm again.”
SNORE President Don Wall joined Howe in lauding the expansion of Tech/Contingency Inspection on Fremont Street, “In its heyday, we would have as many as 500 cars lined up on Fremont Street for the Mint 400,” said Wall, “It was almost like a county fair with off-road cars and it drew thousands of people every year. We should see the same thing happening again with the expansion of Tech Inspection to include all of Fremont Street.”
Last year’s event signaled the return of the Mint 400, which had last been staged in 1988. Run on one of the original courses south of Las Vegas in an area near Primm in 2008, last year’s event was won by Trophy Truck drivers Brian Collins of Las Vegas and Chuck Hovey of Oceanside, California.
SNORE will open its 2009 season with the Battle of Primm Feb. 13-15, with a record entry to date of 277 cars with 3 weeks until race day.
Following the General Tire Mint 400, the remainder of the 2009 schedule will include the Dusty Times Caliente 250 May 8-10; the KC HiLiITES Midnight Special July 25; the South Point SNORE 250 Oct. 2-4 and the Kartek Western Challenge Dec. 12.
Further information regarding the 2009 SNORE Kartek Championship Series can be found at www.snoreracing.net (http://www.snoreracing.net) or call (702) 452-4522.

That is just silly talk!!

We all take what we can get. Nobody is going to have hard feelings at all if you take a ride in another car.... drive another car, or sleep with another guy's wife.... well maybe that last one is a stretch (depends on how bad he wants to get rid of her :D).

NO hard feelings and always take a ride or a seat behind the wheel whenever you can. You paid for the helmet and race suit - USE EM while they are still legal!!
