View Full Version : Class 3 vs Sportsman

Ok I almost feel guilty thinking about building anything other than a Class 3.
But as I sat at work today reading DustyTimes, I kept thinking about How far am I really from being race ready after my already planned cage mods? http://www.thewebwheeler.com/forums/images/smilies/humm_smilie.gif
( Already planned Mods= Engine cage, tie the rear cage to frame, Sheetmetal dash, FiberGlass front fenders. etc.....)
Not Far really, just a few bars here & there & some gussets & I should be ready to go.
Maybe not in SCORE, due to my 1 & 3/4" cage.
But a little bird told me that theres a chance Savage might cert it, if he's in a good mood & the Cage is well designed.
Then I started thinking about how it might be easier to go with the sportman class. & just race M.O.R.E & M.D.R.
Due to the fact that I've seen some street registered rigs race.
Like this thing for example.
http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/496067/fullsize/img_2108.jpg
Then I remembered The Dylans FJ also has all the Glass & such & might even be street legal?

I know I could never get into racing full time like most of you guys..
My work always gets in the way.
So my queston to you guys is a class 3 any stricter than a Sportsman..
I just wanna have fun a maybe race a race or two from time to time.
& wonder if its easier for me to go with a Sportman than Class 3 for a weekend racer?
That would still see some street action?
I love driving my Bronco around town. :D
I was reading my SCORE rule book today & I dont see why I could'nt build a Weekend class 3.
But the book dont seem to list the Sportsman class
Do I just not know what SCORE has it in there as?
It might not ever win but it sure would be fun. http://www.thewebwheeler.com/forums/images/smilies/3gears.gif

the only rules that apply in sportsman are the safety rules. as far as the build of your rig, it is open. yes - as in anything goes. entry fee is about 50% less than pro, and you only recieve trophy's for any win, no payback. no matter how many in class.

& to be honest I feel I might have a better chance at a win in Class 3 considering what some of the Sportsman trucks out there are running..
But Class 3 seems to be disappering... :(
( Hopefully we can do something about that! )
I suppose I could simply build it to Class 3 specs & have the Option.
I just dont see being able to afford racing SCORE.
& I would'nt be racing for the payback.
A trophy would be http://www.thewebwheeler.com/forums/images/smilies/cooool.gif
The idea is to race it strictly for fun.:D
Maybe against you guys!

i don't recomend racing with your windshield on or any window, the dust will not go off, it will stay, it's very hard to race like that, we have ran with and without windshield, defenetly without windshiel, other than that, sportsman just for the money, :(

The Facts are I only see myself as an occasional weekend racer.
so I'd hate to lose the glass.
Seems to of worked for the '07 Baja 250's winner. http://www.thewebwheeler.com/forums/images/smilies/wiggle%20tongue.gif
The facts are that Yes, I know I'm only putting off the inevitable.
but I'm not ready to commit Blanco to a Race only rig..http://www.thewebwheeler.com/forums/images/smilies/shrug.gif
I realize thats probably its future, But I'll fight it as long as possible.
Thats the only way I can justify building towards its evolution! :o
FYI. I decided to build my Sportsman at Class 3 specs! http://www.thewebwheeler.com/forums/images/smilies/cheers.gif
Yes it limits me in the Sportsman class but thats part of the beauty.
Its will help limit how much I spend on this.... :o

Can anyone confirm the chances of me getting cert'ed with SCORE having a 1.75 main cage? http://www.thewebwheeler.com/forums/images/smilies/shrug.gif
I hope it's actually possible, because I'm ready to show the Moss Bros how to win Baja races! http://www.thewebwheeler.com/forums/images/smilies/HistericalSmiley.gif

I see your point, but if you look at the cost of entry fee, for what you might get in return, I just don't agree with running in the sportsman class. Further, in the event you DO win, some of the contigency money doesn't go out to sportsman.
Running with the windshield isn't the end of the world, but chances are you would break it and hate it anyway... I agree with Chup. though... we tried it in class 4 way back when and it never worked well (plus, we got carbon monoxide poisening to boot). You could always take it out for the race, and put a new one in later - especially if you have rock chips or a crack. In theory, I could still put one back in my bronco.
Seriously though... unless you are dead-set on racing in Mexico, the MDR (etc) is probably way more bang for your buck. "sel fish" is just killing us by charging so much, and then in some races we aren't even given the chance to finish on time (i'm still mad about the 05 Baja 500... can you tell?).
Oh - one more thing... I also agree with whomever said it above. Many of the sportsman 2x4 trucks are really long-wheel travel, longer wb, and some really haul ass. That total chaos truck (I think), in Laughlin - passed us like a Trophy Truck. wow. (he rolled it later, and stil passed again like we weren't moving). Raffo was up there racing with 'em though... but he drives like a man possessed sometimes. I guess his brakes are just better than mine - ha ha!

Naw, I'm not dead set on Mexico.
I just wanna have fun & once in a while race it. :D
Basically what it come down to is,
I realize that with my already existing plans for some additional cage work, that I'm very close to being Class legal.
So I'm figuring http://www.thewebwheeler.com/forums/images/smilies/WTF.gif
this way I'll have the option.
For those of you not familar with my BlancoBronco, Check out its build up thread here.
http://www.thewebwheeler.com/forums/...read.php?t=400
It was alot more detailed on TWW#1 before my last site host got pissed when I told him I did'nt want his service'es any more & he deleted the site.
But check it out & tell me what you think.
have I broke any class 3 rules yet that limit me to Sportsman?
Does it look like a potetial Class 3.

Cam, you only want to do few SCORE races a year anyway, so......
1)pull the windshield for the race and re-install after.
2)pull the doors for the race (slap on some stripped out junkyard doors if you want).
3)pull the top for the race.
4) pull the tail gate for the race.
5)build a removable (heavy bolt on) double rear tire carrier/tube bumper to get your weight out the back for the race.
......and have the best of both since you are not ready to totally commit Blanco to be a full race truck just yet. It would add about a half day to your race prep B4 and after each race.

I like jerry's idea, keep all the street legal stuff and swap in some race only parts for the races then go back after. your rig looks to good to stip it all off and not be able to take her down to the beach once in awhile. I plan on keepin my build up as street legal as possible. I am just beginning mine and am glad I found this site.

I can tell you I'm too lazy to remove & replace the parts regularly....
& what are you talking about racing?
Is that a Bronco in your Avatar?

yes thats my bronco. its a beast, not a straight piece of sheetmetal on it, but the mechanicals are all in top notch condition, plus 4:55 gears detroit locker in rear true trac up front. exytended radious arms and plan on gettin autofab bent beams soon. also have a 15000 lb warn up front. cage is in the cab and am adding to it continually to make it legal and safer. i will be racin mdr's and maybe some more's in the future. i have a new body and frame which i plan on building up as the class 3 then puttin my runing gear in when its done. it all depends on the money as how long it takes..
and i can see where your coming from on swappin parts. definatly time consuming

Having raced in straight lines, circles, road, and on water...<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>
Race prep is time consuming!<o:p></o:p>
The faster you go the more time it takes. <o:p></o:p>
The longer the race the more time it takes<o:p></o:p>
Off road prep even for just trail running is time consuming.<o:p></o:p>
Racing is work and there ain't no way around it.<o:p></o:p>
Lazy just ain’t ever going to do much racing, that's why it is referred to as a passion!!:D <o:p></o:p>

Some of those street rigs are pushing $300000... I'm pretty sure Cam's not talking about those ones as much as the ones like the FJ that is pictured.

We ran one sportsman 1400 class and had fun, but the trucks were out of our class(really class 8 and trophy truck stuff with guys with more money than brains and such crushed every panel on the rig.) They run like its a demolition derby race. I say build it for class 3 and if you need to buy new parts go race 1400.
