My GirlFriends son & I are building a Ford Ranger for either a Class 7 or 1400/1450 truck.

I've gotta start reading the SCORE book to figure out where we'd best fit in.

He's decided to go full race with it & wants me to Co-Drive for him. :D
& being he lives 2 blocks from me I'm jumping & donateding all my spare time to helping him with this build.
I figure if I'm gonna co-drive I wanna know as much as I can about this rig so when it has issues, I'll be very familiar with it.

I wish I could spend time wrenching on The Anger issues Bronco but being its a few states away makes that unreasonable.

Anyways, I figured even though its not a Class 3 some of you might be interested in watching what we do & maybe could add input & ideas.

This is copied & pasted from TWW where they dont seem to have too much interest in Racing.:rolleyes:

He's talking about a F150 Trophy Truck styled Front end for it.

OK..... here's the latest.. http://www.thewebwheeler.com/forums/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif

After selling his Ranger, He bought a Chevy & swore that he loved it & would keep it as well. http://www.thewebwheeler.com/forums/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif

Well....... He ended up buying his Ranger back after selling the chevy. http://www.thewebwheeler.com/forums/images/smilies/fordrules%5B1%5D.gif

& now he plans to get HardCore & build a race ready rig with it. http://www.thewebwheeler.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif
He says he wants me as a co-driver & I plan to help out as much as I could when ever theres's work to do on it. http://www.thewebwheeler.com/forums/images/smilies/7.gif

Anyways, heres where we're at as of today.

Today we got serious. http://www.thewebwheeler.com/forums/images/smilies/ewg.gif

The plan is to be a race only rig.
& I'm gonna be Co-Driving with him as well as my Co-Driving in Class 3. http://www.thewebwheeler.com/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
No more street action for this rig.

So here's what we got done today.
As I got there this is what I saw.
http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/689880/fullsize/img_8254.jpg

He already took apart the front end.
http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/689881/fullsize/img_8255.jpg

He took a hammer to the windshield in attempt to take it out. http://www.thewebwheeler.com/forums/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif
http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/689882/fullsize/img_8256.jpg
Opps! http://www.thewebwheeler.com/forums/images/smilies/eusa_doh.gif He missed while swinging the hammer. http://www.thewebwheeler.com/forums/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif
http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/689883/fullsize/img_8257.jpg

The interior is completely gutted.
http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/689884/fullsize/img_8258.jpg

1st thing I did was dive in & got the busted up windshield out.
http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/689886/fullsize/img_8260.jpg

& being the plan is to link the rear, we're gonna go with a custom tube frame rear.

http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/689889/fullsize/img_8266.jpg

http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/690290/fullsize/img_8283.jpg

We got stuck because we needed some larger wrenches. http://www.thewebwheeler.com/forums/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif
So I walked over to my place & brought some of my tools over & on my way back I spotted this one legged Crow.

Don't let him take a hammer to that 2.9, I am still sort of looking for one! You didn't say what he was going to use for a motor, but that won't be enough beans for any of those classes. Oh, and get some jack stands to help out those two scissors jacks!

The jacks have been purchaseed since those pics. :)

& for now we're just gonna concentrate on the cage & suspension.
He's mentioned a 4.0.
But we're not even to that stage yet.

Did'nt get much done this weekend on it but heres what we did do.

Today I started with removing the stock coil spring buckets.

http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/691889/fullsize/img_8297.jpg

Then we replaced the stock rubber body mounts with some solid aluminum ones.

These were a pain in the ass to remove.

http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/693702/fullsize/img_8306.jpg

I did get my rule book back & read that being we cut the frame there's no Class 7 that we can race. :(
If he was'nt so gun-ho to build something like his buddies built I could of stopeed him.

But whatever, There's nothing we can do about it now.
I'm not really sure what Sportsman is all about?
I figure as long as you pass the cage rules anything goes?

Anyways here the latest Pics ofd whats going on.

http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/693725/fullsize/img_8357.jpg
As you can see this gave us LOTS OF ROOM!

http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/693738/fullsize/img_8376.jpg

I keep thinking we should dump half this crap & just go with a Carb intake...
But are 2.9 Ford V6 Carb Intakes available?

I'd love to get rid of all the BS electronics.

roczuk
12-09-2008, 05:39 AM
progress is going good.

I knew a guy a few years ago that hated EFI and wanted a carbed 2.9 and couldn't find anything for them so he made his own mount and placed 2 carbs on the intake; worked great but again after searching and searching he didn't find **** for the 2.9's.

The EFI and motor he's got runs awesome. just leave it alone. when you guys enter your first race and realize a 5 HP briggs and stratton lawn mower engine would probably be better then you'll be glad you didn't spend any additional time/money on that 2.9.

I can get a 350/t400 combo for cheap as hell off a vendor I work with as his employee decided to total the work truck. sure it's a 400 but you can always swap that out or add an overdrive to it, whatever is cheaper.

with a carb'd 350 you'll have a chance keeping up.

Blanco
12-09-2008, 06:45 PM
Actually Dave's talking about pulling the engine & trans to give it a once over & I'm thinking I'll just talk him into a 4.0 since its out anyways why bother to put it back in. :D

roczuk
12-10-2008, 08:55 AM
it's good he wants to pull it out. not a good swap though on the 4.0.

2.9L 140HP
4.0L 160HP

not worth it.

you want simple and cheap just get a carb'd V8 and an electronic free Auto in there.

Blanco
12-10-2008, 12:50 PM
I suppose it don't matter being it'll run sportman. :rolleyes:I'm just thinking about Class 7 rules. That require you maintain the V6.

roczuk
12-10-2008, 12:54 PM
I thought you couldn't race Class7 due to the rear frame section being cut?

if I read it wrong then I understand. but if i'm right then how does it matter if he's got a V6 or not?

No, I just meant shop safety. The work on the truck looks great. Pretty well thought out for what you describe as a "design as you go" project. I was anxious for just a second when I first saw that cross member that boxed in the end of the frame. I was thinking "where in the world is the driveshaft going to go", and then the next picture showed the hump being built into it. I certainly applaud anyone that drives a truck into the garage and then sawzalls the back frame off a couple out hours later! Whatever we can do to keep up the momentum and enthusiasm to get it to the point where it drives back out again is what we all want to see.

I am just allergic to doctors and co-payments, that's all!

11-23-2009, 07:08 PM
sorry i did not reply sooner but i had complete into the truck where i stopped building 5500 including the truck and all the shocks and stuff. i really did most of it on the cheap and found a lot of good deals. i had a good 1000.00 dollars in the 1 3/4 120 wall dom tubing, all the parts i had on there where mostly built by me including the complete 3 link set up and the old front end that was in the preveous pics. that was like 800 in materials including all heims bungs bushings and misalianments. the shocks were brand new from king and that cost about 2500.00 that including 4 2.5 dual rate coilovers and 2 2.5 16' inch smothbodies. the truck its self was only 800 but most of the work was done with just my time and bordum. i dont know if that was a good enough break down of what it cost me but let me know if you need to know anything in particular.
