Ok it is time to post this intro (Blanco pushed me), my name is Bob and I am in the process (long as it has been so far) in building a 73 K5 Blazer into a Class 3. I have had many conversations with many friendly and helpful people so far. I live in Boise which is difficult to access and personally see the parts that are required for such a build. I recently traveled down to Pasadena for work and took the hour plus drive to Kartek, talk about a kid in a candy store! I met Baja Mike and he was very helpful and gave me further encouragement to move forward.

The Blazer is going to be heavy to start with, I have a K30 donor which will give me my axles ((Dana 60 and 14FF) a big block, turbo 400 and NP205) thinking the K30 could someday be used for a pre-run vehicle or possibly other race truck? I like the old style look and it would just be cool… But the Blazer comes first! Bought it in Sacramento during the late 80’s and drove it as a college rig and on the dunes in Pismo, 6’ air and a broken axle dana 44 (bent) and it still drove on the freeway to San Luis Obispo to get me home…I have hauled this rig from CA to Boise (where I decided to go the Class 3 direction :D) and to three different houses and hopefully to its final resting where it will be built to finally roll out a racer.
I am currently waiting on a house with a 900 sf shop! Finally no more crawling around a two car garage populated with everything other than just auto tools… hopefully within the month I get to move and I’m faced with hauling two non drivable rigs across Boise (Blazer and the K30)… the shop is the motivation!

From what I have learned is that I need the parts to build the cage, I am leaning towards Fox Bypass 18” shocks, 40+ gallon fuel cell, I have the 3G seats, Deaver springs, Hannemann fenders and drop hood but the cage is my biggest hurdle, I recently bought a mig welder but would feel 100% better if someone else a lot more qualified could weld and bend it. I am finding that every cage is different so I am looking at a lot of photos to get ideas, spare tire placement, fuel cell location, etc. I will have many question on this and how to tie to the frame, I am loosing the 300+ fiberglass top and skinning with aluminum (bought road signs from a scrap yard that appear to be the right thickness, bare aluminum up to the sky (painted) Speed Limit 25 to the interior… hahahaahhaaaaaaaaa hopefully going a lot faster than that but I know there will be many times going less than that…

I can keep going but will end it here…

Again thanks and hopefully this K5 will be rolling next year! or the next or the next... money and time....

One question I do have is that since BITD has some races close by, what would a Class 3 classify as racing in their series? I want to do Baja (any of them) but I would like to test it close to home for the first time.

Thanks again,
Bob

Welcome to the site! I would suggest first before you start building that you make a trip to one of the races. Doesn't have to be a big one, but preferably either a BITD or SCORE race to see some of the vehicles that are racing. BITD does not have an equivalent of Class 3 at this time, but would probably add it if you showed up with several vehicles. You can absorb so much more when you are there in person. I have brought quite a few people out for their first time, and they adjusted their opinions a bunch after seeing the racers in action. Another option is to tour around the shops in the Santee/El Cajon area. If you open up off road publication, you will notice that there are a ton of shops in that area, and most will let you poke around and have a look.

Hold off on the 18" Fox's as well until you get further into the build, those are about 4 feet long at full extension and are very hard to mount on the truck. You might get them on the rear, but no way on the front!

Thanks for the welcome!!!
It is hard for me to get to those areas since I am located in Boise, Idaho. I went to a BORE race in Wendover last year, 6 hour drive from Boise but need to go to more races and areas to see what people are doing in their shops.
I have been told I could get 18" out of the rear, not sure on the front yet.
Would you happen to have any detailed pics of your cage build? or others out there they can share, specically the frame tie in?

Thanks again,
Bob

Good to see another old Goat surfacing. Lots of our team went to Poly in the late eighties and early nineties. I drove a blue 79 Toyota that had a V8 in the later years. It had a similar Pismo axle story. Good luck on your build.

Ken, I was surprised to see the Poly Goat name!!! It has been since 92 that I have heard it! I still have the same ol' 73 beige color Blazer, I will track down some photos and send them along from back in the day, maybe you will remember it. Grenaded the rear end while down there and had it fixed by one of the members, his name escapes me. I remember a yellow dodge and seem to remember a blue toyota.
Thanks for the reply and thanks for the luck, i'm going to need it!

Welcome to the class!

I remember a yellow dodge and seem to remember a blue toyota.

There can only have been one yellow dodge, that belongs (or formerly belonged) to C3R member Baja Joe. Surely though you remember a white early bronco with a god-awful front bumper, that would belong to Salttoy. (look at his avatar for a pic of the bronco and Ken's toy)

Welcome to the site RSB3. I think I remeber your Blazer, it was lifted and on 38" swampers if I am correct. I had a 69' white bronco that I use to tear up the dunes with when I went to Poly. The Poly Goats are still active and most of us on the Moss Team have a connection one way or another to the Goats.

Here is a picture at Pismo back in March of 1990 of my Blazer, I was the guy on the left. Hard to see in that photo.
Thanks for the welcome and I can see that this site is really going to help me get moving on my project!
Thanks again to all,
Bob

Hey SHWAMPYBALLS, welcome to the site. I am an Alumni from '94 and the president of the Poly Goats either '91 or '92, Moss2, Dave G. or Baja Joe have a better memory of those times than I do.

swampy balls and poly goats. There's a lot of weird animal things going on here. Kinda reminds me of defenseless sheep.
