--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From www.norra.com:

VINTAGE OFF ROAD VEHICLES / MOTORCYCLES (1955-1975) AND ALTERNATIVE FUEL VEHICLES ONLY!

The National Off Road Racing Association (NORRA) is proud to present the 2009 NORRA Revival of the 1967 Mexican 1000 Rally. This event, "Honoring the Past, Forging the Future", will be held September 16-20, 2009 and will start at Ensenada, Mx, overnight at Bay of LA, overnight at Loreto, and end at La Paz, Mx .

The 2009 Revival of the 1967 Mexican 1000 Rally is a Stage Rally with Vintage and Alternative Fuel Vehicle Classes. The liaison and special stage course (paved and technical) will be specifically selected to accommodate vintage race vehicles from the 1950-1970's era. We want you to have fun but also keep your vehicles and bodies intact while testing your driving ability.

Please review the rules and format of the rally below. Submit your entry form and fee directly through the website, www.norra.com. Or Mail to: NORRA, 11650 Darling Rd., Agua Dulce, CA 91390. Entries accepted after September 1st are subject to an additional $250.00 Late Processing Fee. No Driver Packets will be mailed after September 1st.

OK. Now Let's Have Fun!

RALLY SCHEDULE AND RULES OF THE (OFF)-ROAD:
Contingency & Registration - Sept 16, 2009
Rally - Sept 17, 18, 19, 2009
Award Ceremony/Party in LaPaz - Sept 20, 2009

-Three-day stage rally on a secret route.
-There will NO pre-running.
-Competitors will receive their route book, GPS information, and starting positions the night before the event at the driver's meeting.
-On the morning of the start of each day's stage, NORRA staff will send out a pre-runner to clear the course.
-The first vehicles off the line will be the motorcycles at 6am sharp. All vehicles need to be ready to race and in line 15 minutes before their starting time.
-After the first motorcycle is sent off, there will be 30-second intervals before the second vehicle is sent on the course, and so on.
-After the last motorcycle is on the course, the other vehicle categories will start; Cat1, Cat 2, Cat 3, and so on...
Category 11, the Alternative Fuel Vehicles, will finish out the vehicle categories.
-After the final vehicles are on course, NORRA Officials will send a sweep vehicle to clear the course and assist with any issues.
-During the event, vehicles will be traveling liaison stages to special stage sections. Liaison stages are not competition stages, so speed limits will apply.
-All vehicles will be equipped with a black box to monitor traveling speeds as well as location on route at all times. Vehicles not obeying local speed limits will be disqualified from the event.
-The liaison stages will have a time limit to reach the next special stage, giving ample time to arrive at the stage start. By following the speed limits and staying on route, teams will have no problem getting to the next stage with time to prep for that special stage.
-Deviations from the liaison route are not allowed. Penalties and possible disqualification may apply during liaison stages by arriving too early showing that a vehicle has not obeyed local speed limits or deviated from the liaison route (as confirmed by black box GPS positioning).
-Upon arrival at special stages, vehicles will be lined up and started in order of arrival at the stage start, then released at 30-second intervals. This format will continue at all special stages through to the final stage of the day.
-Special stages will be timed individually and totaled throughout the entire event.
-Penalties will be added at the stage they were incurred.
-At the end of the day's stages when vehicles cross the final stage finish, they will be directed to a compound area where they will remain until the following day's start.
-The compound area will be fenced off and guarded during the entire time the event is in a bivouac.
-No one will be allowed into the compound area without proper credentials. The idea behind the compounding of the vehicles is to provide a safe and secure place to work on team vehicles and to build camaraderie between teams, plus a location that spectators can view the vehicles and their teams at work.
-Teams will be allowed to work on their vehicles through the night if need be. Teams and vehicles must be ready to race 15 minutes prior to their official start time.
-Australian start rules may apply, which means that the last vehicle in on the final stage of the previous day will be the first vehicle out the following morning. At the discretion of the NORRA OFFICIALS, the starting rules may change. The starting format will be announced each night at the driver's meeting, when the route books and GPS information for the following day's competition are issued.
-Everybody needs to be ready to rally at day's start.
-We will follow this format to the end of the final stage and into La Paz, where the final stage will take us into town for the official finish.
-After crossing the Finish Line, the vehicles will go back into the compound area until the final vehicle has finished the event.
-The compound area will remain open and available for teams to keep their vehicles secure after the end of the event for 5 days. At $20.00 per day charge. This will allow teams that want to see the sights of Baja do so knowing that their vehicles and trailers will be safe.

The Mexican 1000 Rally is designed to be a Fun Event, Honoring the past, and those that raced for the love of racing, and Forging the Future of Alternative Fuel Racing. We are very excited at NORRA to present to you an opportunity to take part in this special event and we look forward to seeing you in Mexico. Let's Party in La Paz!

After taking a look at the home page for the NORRA 1000 i saw 2 photos of my Vic Hickey built James Garner driven 1970 Olds 442, I think its time to bring the 442 out, I will plan on running the the Olds 442 at that event, If i can afford it i will bring the 1969 Hickey truck also, But $$ is tight building the new Race Blazer so time will tell

Do you have a roll cage on the 69 Pick up?
I think you are required to add one and a fuel cell.

I have a cage that came in the truck and the two 25 gallon steel fuel cells in the bed, If i cannot run the truck like it is i will not take it, I WILL NOT CHANGE THE TRUCK to make it to any event, But my 442 had a full cage and a 50 gallon settl can bladder fuel cell, That ones good

The cut off year for race trucks and cars was first set for 1975 and older, I have been lucky to be helping the staff from NORRA, If they allowed the cut off year to be moved to 1985 or 1989 how mant people from this site would attend, We would like to get 300 to attend this event, This is a once in a life time event and they are even going to film a feature documentary on the history of the Baja 1000 and NORRA, and this entire race , Please give me your input on this race and lets see how many people we can get fron Class 3 to attend the NORRA 1000

One very cool thing about this epic event is when Mike Pearlman found out i had the James Garner 442 and planned on running the car the entire 1000 miles he told me about the high end Documentary and sence Iam going to debut the car at the event they were excited and wanted to make the 442 a big part of the event and the film so i have the production full acess to use the car so now during the final restoration of the car iam building camera mounts for the film crew to use, NORRA version of Dust To Glory:D I might even put a Class 3 Racing sticker of the car to show my support for all Class 3 members!, Like that Cam:eek:

Here are some of my original NORRA patches, The most rare it the 1967 1000 and the black NORRA Jacket back large patch and black decals, Iam going to build a white jacket the same as James Garner had and put all these patches on it for when i run the 442 at the 1000, And i just got back home from Ventura from getting the original ram air hood that was on the 1970 Hickey-Garner 442, hat was a rare find

Its a factory 1970 Olds 442 w-25 hood, They were fiberglass on top with a metal inner frame, The factory 1970 Ram Air hoods sell for around $2500.00 to $3000.00 for a good condition hood, This guy charged me the going rate, He did not know i needed it for the original car it was on when Garner raced Baja in 1969, To me the hood was worth a lot more then $3000.00 but it still hurt to spend it on a 40 year old hood

Todd, How i found this old stuff is, I talked to Mark Mendenhall who got all 3 442 cars after Hickey and Garner were done with them, Mark told me he sold all the left over Olds race car parts to Jerry in Ventura, I called him and met up with him, Thats when i first saw the hood and was told $3000.00, I wanted it but i had to wait, But he told me he bought all the parts for the Olds 442 parts for a restoration project, Then he showed me a bunch of suspension parts that were not for a Olds 442, The spindles were a lot bigger and the rotors were 5 on 5 bolt pattern and there were calipers and dust shields and a box of custom lower ball joints, He did a part # search and had no results and had no idea what they were for They were no use to him and he was getting ready to scrap them, As soon as i saw them i knew they were the spair race suspension for my 1970 Olds 442 then he told me i could have all the junk for FREE!!!!!!!! I about crapped and loaded it all up, So when the chassis is done i will use these Spindles-Rotors-Calipers on the 442, You cannot get any closer to original then that, Take a look at the 2nd photo, Thats a stock 442 spindle, I still cannot find out what the spindled were originally built for, After this killer parts find the $3000.00 i paid Jerry for the hood did not feel so bad, So Todd thats how i found the hood and other cool stuff

Mike P

So can you give us run down of the suspension set up?

Norra 1000
05-27-2009, 03:09 PM
Iam still trying to figure out what the suspension is, I know the factory upper and lower a arm were reworked and has a lot of plating with tig welding, The lower ball joints are huge, We cannot figure out what the spindles are from but i have spairs, The a arm mounting points have been moved the top of the frame where the coil springs ride have big round steel plates on top and steel sleeves - Pipe that goes aroung the coils, I will take some photos of the suspension on the car when i blow it apart next week, Remember this car was built 40 years ago

I don't think we'll even try to get it ready. I'm always short on time, unfortunately, and the $$ just isn't there either. And working in my one car garage in Phoenix in the summer is the pits. I read through the rules a few days ago and I'd practically have to rebuild the truck to meet their requirements.

That's a shame Todd, need to have the EBs represented as they played such a key role in the NORRA days and beyond. Fully understand not being able to make it tho. If the NORRA 1K goes well, maybe next year? Any other EB owners looking at the event?

As far as the course being easy, read that NORRA is trying to use as much of old 1K courses as possible and altho speeds will be slower, I'd bet the course and the need to race atleast some, will still take it's toll on man and machine.

Want to help chase bad, if I can swing it.

Todd, The vintage cars and trucks can pretty much run as they did the year they run, You have seen my 1969 Chevy truck, All they want is a window net added to my truck, Your Bronco would be very close but trust me i under stand about the heat and 1 car garage and most of all the $$ end, I put all my extra cash in building the Blazer then most sponcers backed out do the lastes $$ issue, So that ment more $$ from me, Then the NORRA thing came my way, I have 90 days to do a full frame off rebuild on the Garner 442 all the $$ comes out of my bank account and right now its a big fat 0, So what iam doing is you know i build race motors and Blowers for them so i went threw my shop and found 8 to 10 good blowers to build and thats where the 442 fund is made of, Iam doing polished aqnd satin blowers and Iam showing Liam how to build them so when he want a 671 for his 69 mustang he can build his own, Here are the last 2 we built 1 satin and 1 polished

As you know my story on how i found my 69 truck and the 442 was a once in a lifetime find, Then i found the original hood, Now i called Mondello racing engines because they built motors for Hickey, I had a few long talkes with them and they told me they had a lot of original olds parts from the 69 70 Hickey era, Then i received a call from them on Friday, They found the original build paperwork and the 69 442 pre runner had a 350 olds, The Banshee had a 350 olds first then a all aluminum 455 olds, My 1970 442 came with a factory 350 olds but during the factory Olds racing program the power to be at Olds factory racing had built a prototype 403 Olds racing engine for my car, It was way ahead of its time, I wont bore you with the details but Mondello found the original back up 403 race enging for my car 100% new in the factory shipping crate with the paperwork, They also had a NOS prototype intake and stage 4 carb, I think that score will be great for my 442 restoration, Mondello will photograph every step of the build:D

I paid for the motor today, It turned out the motor was a 410ci Olds not a 403, it was a 403 block with trick factory stuff, I also got the ported intake and stage 4 carb and they found a set of original race heads for the 410, They were ported castings so the heads are being built next week, So it is a complete Mondello race engine, I was told in 1969 it made 500hp and 420 foot pounds of torque, That should move the old car, Iam happy i can put the 442 back in one piece with a lot of the original parts, I just want to preserve history right. I pick up the motor in two weeks

SCORE and Ensenada blocking a NORRA start in ensenada

Do you guys think NORRA has worked out the same backwards deals that SCORE works for us to be there and sell stuff/support the racers? I'm really afraid to go down there with product. I think we are all good and offiical with Immigration now, but customs is still a handshake deal and I think Oscar, Paul and Sal make that happen. There is no 'legit' way to get by customs and actually being there without a Mexican company selling stuff. Any thoughts? I would love to go, but don't know if it's worth the risk!!

All customs employees in the country (all of em) got fired a month ago, all new kids with college, i dont think they can pull it off, doubt sal could do it now either.

On a side note, Sal and Oscar did block the Ensenada start for this race, They pressured ensenada mayor to deny the ensenada start, or they would take away the 1000. When the venue changed to mexicali, they pressured the San Felipe tourism delegate threatening to take the SF 250 away. The Mexicali mayor said its a go, then they called Ecology department to see if their permits where in order, if not to please pressure them so the race wouldnt happen.
Biggest difference beetween NORRA and SCORE > Norra didnt ask for 1 cent, no 50 hotel rooms, no Ejido payment money, no payment for land use, no nada, and they are REALLY promoting Baja, not only racing, looks like a 2 hour documentary will be made out of this film, to maybe be shown on discovery channel.
Wonder what would happen if Baja denied SCORE to race baja, it would be the death of SCORE, but not of the baja 1000...

Cant supply sources, but theyre so good, im ashamed for the Ensenada mayor and State Tourism Secretary.

I find it hard to believe that Sal is trying to block NORRA's efforts. He really does not have the time or resources to do that, and I can't believe that any city in Baja would turn down bringing more folks in. I do agree that the negotiations are probably a long and complicated process. There is a process for vendors to bring stuff in, but you pay the import duty up front. BITD only tried running races down there for a very short time before they realized they were out of their element.

Glad they postponed it as would be disespectful to the suffering locals to race thru there so soon after, IMHO.

Well, we haven't had a chance to put together any PR on it yet so I was holding off on an announcement here and on classic.

Chris Wilson and Glen Straightiff will be driving our Stroppe Bronco in the NORRA race in April. I am delivering the Bronco to Glen's shop in San Diego this weekend to begin the restoration/repairs/prep necessary to compete in such an event. Chris and Glen are handling all the work and in return get to drive a historically significant vehicle in the race/rally. Andrew and I end up with a Bronco that's essentially complete in terms of restoration, etc.

We believe it's a win/win situation for all parties involved.

One year ago, the three of us (Lara, my dad, me) were in Coco's but he was off getting his other leg lopped off...

He told us the HILARIOUS story about how he drove that truck (before the hand controls were in) TO ENSENADA using sticks that he somehow fastened to the pedals. He got pulled over by a cop, who insisted he get out and explain why he was driving so poorly... He said, I can't get out sir. The cop leaned and said, what do you mean? When he saw... I guess he felt bad for asking him to step out of the car!! They let him go on his way to the hospital. It was very depressing being in Coco's Corner with no Coco!!

Back on topic, sorry. So is this RACE a RACE or NOT??? I"m hearing "no". Fun run?

Here are a few photos showing some of the upgrades to the 442, Last week i had to make a decision on the original Olds 12 bolt, They are weak, 28 spline, cannot get parts, So i bought a new GM 12 bolt housing, Then i ordered a 35 spline floater set up to mount on the 12 bolt housing, I have been working with Sandy Cone on this one, I then ordered a 35 spline spool, I could have just put in a 40 spline 9" floater rear end but when people look under the rear on the car i want them to see a factory 12 bolt, Then i took the original spindles off the front and installed a new set of Speedway NASCAR style spindles with heavy duty Steel hubs, I pulled out the original fuel cell and sence this car had a 1 off fuel cell i had ATL custom build one thats 100% same spec as the original and i had a local sheet metal company build a perfect replacement steel can, Saftey is #1 with this car and i want to finish the race

Per Norra
VINTAGE OFF ROAD VEHICLES / MOTORCYCLES (1955-1975) AND ALTERNATIVE FUEL VEHICLES ONLY!

Point. Put gasahol in the thing - then anything goes?
Point. How do you find the build date for one off buggy or a truck with new fiberglass?

IMO, leave off the alternative fuel then its a real vintage race. ALternative fuel certainly is NOT vintage.

I guess I need to study the various categories for the race?

Makes me wonder, if the entry numbers were too low, so they started letting others in?

About a week or 2 before the race, I had a fellow Toronto Classic Bronco member call me. He was originally supposed to be in Marshall's Big Oly Bronco, but Marshall pulled out within the last week or two. He asked me if there was anyone else going that he may be able to hook up with. I immediatly pm'd Chris Raffo and Ken Leavitt. He ended up getting a ride with Chris and loved it. He has posted his story at A Rookie Blasts Off in The Norra 1000 Race.....Pictures - ClassicBroncos.com Forums

Chris and Ken, thanks for your help on this. He was pretty bummed about not being able to go in the Big Oly, but he is super happy about riding with Chris! You made a bad experience into a great memory for him.

Thanks again!

Should have seen Gary's grin from ear to ear when his leg was over. He didn't want to get out of the truck and he got into his rental car and disappeared down the dirt road back to the hwy like he was in a trophy truck...Haha!

Did Jose from Spain ever hook up with Raffo or Ken?

We met up with him at awards on Sunday and he had already hooked-up with another Spaniard for a ride back to LA.

Sure did, He Ken and team became tight buds and he got some good seat time in the bronco as well. He was a big help in their effort that resulted in them finishing. He also connected with another racer from Spain and he decided to stay in baja longer with Ken and Lara. Hope he does a writeup.

Hey Chris, did your rigs make it to the border safe and sound?

After the trans got rebuilt and wouldn't shift properly, we bailed. The trucks are supposed to be trucked to TJ next week. $300 each. I hope to be there waiting for them so they don't get pilfered in TJ.

Good deal, shipping them and flying sure beat trying to nurse both rigs all the way north. Hope picking them up goes well.

You're an endurance animal, the way you raced for two days on little sleep, wrenched most the night in Loreto and raced the last day to La paz. Great racing with you.

My right foot was was called to duty. No slacking. It was a pleasure to have you along. When you have six guys to move three trucks over two thousand miles in Baja, everyone has to do their part. Thanks for doing yours.

On limited time, having others to help prep meant that I could make the race, literally. Bob Morton played a huge role and Jim Richardson, of Rich's Signs kept us going in the last 24 hours hours, but I wanted to thank another site member, Gilbert/ 11wnb who came over the weekend before with a friend and helped me pull the suspension apart. Thanks again.

Don't get used to Gilbert! He's mine for the Baja Mil!!
:D

Great racing with ya Chris. In the future, I hope they tell us:
a) what class we are in
b) where we stand each evening

THEN we can go out and race!!

It's odd to not know where you stand, what class you are in... and just go race???

I received confirmation that the Blazer and the Sub are on their way to TJ, arriving on Thurs. this week. The story will continue in the back streets of TJ. Stay tuned sports fans.

For those that know TJ, the address is Ave. International #7777 Ejido Tampico Tijuana The shipping company is Lopez Cinco Freights.

Posting the address to document where you will have been last seen in TJ when you go to get your trucks? AAgghhh! Did I write that? Seriously Best of luck, and be safe, Class 3 wouldn't be the same without it's token Blazer and the infamous Raffo to Razzz.
