Hi Guys -- better late than never, huh?

My partner John and I got into this thing because of Chuck (BC). I've been an Early Bronco enthusiast for most of my life, and read an article about Chuck's Baja Adventure. I grew up in Phoenix, and always loved watching the desert races, so decided I would give it a shot. I called my buddy John to gage his interest, and he said "hell yeah!". He'd done a little MX racing in his early days, but neither of us had ever raced anything like Baja. We intended to do some shorter races, but the racer took longer to build than we anticipated -- so our first race ever was the '06 Baja 1000. We did "ok", I guess..made it 236.5 miles (checkpoint 3) before having to stop due to a STUPID failure..our steering box ripped away from the frame -- something we KNEW was an issue, but just didn't address! We weren't going to set any land speed records, but we felt like we could finish..oh well, we'll be back. Our plans this year are to try the Vegas to Reno (BITD) race and then back to Baja in November. It looks like BITD whacked class 3000, so I'm not sure what that means for us. Anyway, we're just having fun and enjoying life. John and I are competetive, but we are focused on the adventure more than the "W".

Thanks for putting up the site -- look forward to meeting you guys.

Scott (Coach).

Welcome to C3R. :)

Hopefully if this site gets enough traffic & we start getting more people joining the ranks of class 3 racers BITD will bring back the Class...

Lee Orr is racing BITD, but I forget what class he said he falls into.

Maybe he'll reply here or you can PM him.

"We were given the option to run class 8000 or class 1800 (prerunner class) at Parker this year. The only other option is the stock SUV class if your vehicle fits those rules." (per Lee Orr)

Vegas to Reno sounds like fun, but why don't you join us for the Baja 500 where your fellow class 3 racers will welcome you with open arms?

That had been our original plan, but logistics adds a few days to Baja that we don't have going to Vegas. Plus, we're planning on bringing our families and making it a mini-vacation, and Baja is our "guys only" trip. I'd like to do them all, but unfortunately I have to slip in a little work now and then as well! ;)

Do you guys know if Lee had to do any mods for Class 8000? We're more interested in getting some seat time than anything else with this one, so just "racing" is good enough -- we don't really care about class.

Thanks fellas --

Scott,
We are running class 1800 the pre-runner class. Class 8000 opens the rules to where you can do just about anything you want to a class 3 truck, but what needs to be done to win in that class and that is to lengthen the wheel base. That is why we are running the pre runner class as well as it is cheaper.

Thanks Lee -- I'll check the 1800 class rules. Hope to see you there this summer.

From what it looks like, the 1800 is a completely open class, no limitations on anything if i was reading it right.

If it was last year, you could have run class 8000 just about by yourself, but this year Curt LeDuc brought his real class 8 truck back from TT and already won the Parker race. I think there was only one other finisher in the class? With the Ford contingency program, LeDuc is probably making money even after expenses. If you just want to race, then 1800 will give you a slot to fit into at a reasonable cost.

I have spectated and chased the Vegas to Reno race several times, was even there last year. I like the format and the area they run in, and would still really like to run in it. Remember that in BITD, you break, you fix it, there are no chase crews parked out there to tow you in! As far as bringing the family, you will have some time in Vegas, then everything has to load up and go to Dayton or Carson City or Reno. It's a full speed run to keep up with a race entry in the chase vehicles, and in fact if the racer is moving without problems, they will out run the chasers on the upper end of the course. It is harder keeping up with this race than Baja, more highway miles than race miles. Nevada uses radar, they use it early, and they use it often! Like Baja, its the most activivity the locals will see all year.

We just need some "stick" time, so sounds like 1800 is for us. We'll probably leave the family in Vegas and meet back up with them on the haul home. We both have 17 yr old sons, so we're going to also use this as a chance to give them some seat time next to us in the racer. Thanks for the insights on the race..it does sound like fun! On another note - I've been speaking with Doug Graddick (he's one of the drivers in the 24 hr Bronco -- actually, the only one that seems to be able to keep pace with you guys!) Since they rolled their beast this year, they're taking a year off as a team -- but I think he'll be joining up with us for Baja. Ed Griffin has a really good bunch of guys with that team, and they all live within just a few miles of me. What a small world, huh? Thanks again for the BITD tips -- maybe we'll see you there this year?

In the slower classes, you can easily keep up with your race truck with your chasers (we race Stock Mini) but you're right - the upper end is faster and of course at 1-2 a.m., you're dog tired from driving 500-600 miles too.

V2R is one of my favorite races (Parker being my favorite) and I love attending it too. I won't be there this year because of the Bronco SOB event in OR, but hopefully can attend next year.

Class 1800 is a handy class to enter a chase rig in if you want to ensure on-course support during a race. We ran it that way a few years ago in one of the Vegas races. We had two trucks racing and wanted to do everything we could to ensure we won the season championship. So we entered our prerunner and I drove that in the race behind the race trucks and if they broke, we pulled over and helped change parts. Kinda fun racing with the windows rolled up and the stereo playing some tunes while you blasted through some silt beds. We ended up having to stop 3-4 times to help replace broken parts on our 2nd race truck.

I think we're definitely going this year in the Safari Class (1800). So help me out here.. if you break and can't fix the racer in place, do you just wait until all the racers clear and then head out on the course to tow it home? I'm assuming BFG pits - any idea on how far apart they normally are? Any other pit groups for this race (like a Mag 7)? Are there GPS files that get distributed by BFG? or are they even needed?

Yeah, on a point-to-point race like this, you contact BITD that you're broken down/out-of-the-race and I think they let you in to tow it out after everyone's cleared the course. I say that with a big "if" because we've never broken that hard in the middle of nowhere at V2R that we had to quit the race. We run Goodyear tires and up through last year Goodyear had pits at predetermined distances like BFG does in Baja. I don't remember the distances because we didn't use them much, if at all. In '06, the pit group Locos Mocos helped run at least one of the Goodyear pits. Rocketman might know how they handled that. Maxxis is now the official BITD tire and I don't think they provide pit support. We used to get our GPS files from Dave Churchill with Ford but he got axed with Ford's budget cuts. We still get GPS files but I'm not sure who provides them. We tend not to use the GPS very much, if at all - we don't find them particularly useful on the BITD courses.

BITD does not allow pre-running, with the exception of a one time scheduled "course inspection" run that is arranged and led by the BITD officials over a two day period. You could certainly do your own GPS map and notes at that time. The course inspection is done maybe a couple of weeks before the race.

I am going to have study up myself on the rest of the details of this race. Maybe, just maybe.....

Yeah, we usually depend on the "pre-fun" run to make notes/learn details on the course. The pre-fun runs are a lot of fun - they're basically pre-runs by another name..

I like that Safari Pre-runner class because the entry fee is CHEAP and we don't have to do anything to our racer. It's really just a good chance for us to beat up the racer with some of our changes, and give us more driving time(which we desparately need).

This will be a quick in/out for us, no pre-running. Texas is a long way from Vegas also! Of course, we're not going to do any pre-running in Baja this year either. Hell, we ran about 75 miles last year and on race day it looked NOTHING like it did during pre-run, so I don't see the point!

You guys should come and do the V2R! it's just fun!

Thanks for the info Todd -- blow off that other thing and come with us! you can tell me all about how PJ poured your gas! :D

A down side of Safari Class is you are last to start, but we like it because just as you state we can run our truck with out having to make any adjustmnets and just have some fun. We still plan on making this race. I hope to see you out there.

I dunno, I nabbed it off of Bfix a few months back, and never did find out who owns it.

Mine will look just like that, except orange.:D nobody will be able to see the SEFI motor, 4R70W, BCB A/C, cruise control, etc.:D

I've sure got my work cut out for me...

Here's a couple of pics, the condition of that spring hanger is pretty indicative of the condition of the rest of the undercarriage. Rock crawling is hard on OEM equipment; hence the plan to build a buggy. :D

NOT! The Tillamook trails are slow stuff, but the main attraction is the beach stuff, sand dunes (small dunes, yes, but by no means slow stuff!) I tested out my new coilovers and hydro bumps last year there on my rock crawler/dune runner EB buggy. 70mph runs across a bumpy beach, getting air and rippin around! It was very cool! Give it a try!

Yup "slow trails" and if you can imagine we used to run them: Time To Distance, or race em against the clock... That sort of fun is politically incorrect, but if you want to find the weak point in your truck Run those trails/roads hard in the winter:D

Those Pro-trucks are just awful traction-wise, that really seems suprising the have so much trouble. I have seen more of those stuck than just about anything else.
