I've got the bug after co-driving with my brother in the wild west 100 earlier this month. I have access to a couple of old class 3 trucks that would need minimal work to get going but neither appears to fit the rules anymore based on the motor unless i am missing something

phill swaney/ al whackers 1982 jeep scrambler
raced class 3 in the mid to late 80's with a 401 amc v-8

mike swansons 1978 scout ssII
raced class 3 about the same time also with a 401 amc v-8

would these still pass tech inspection as neither vehicle came equipt with an amc v-8 from the factory, only 6 cyl were offered.

thanks for the help!

& I'd also queston the Cage, considering SCORE moved to a larger dia tube per weight of the rig..

The above is only in reference to SCORE & probably BITD.

But you could do a simple engine swap to solve that enigine issue.

MDR & MORE seem to not be as strict as SCORE, so you could probably go that route.

the cages are no problem, .120 1.75od
the motors are a problem as replacing a good running 401 with a 258 6cyl cuts the power in half!

i was looking through the rules and that is what i was questioning

can a 1982 Jeep scrambler run an amc v-8 engine and still be legal in class 3?

I would call it a end of the year 81 if I were you when the v8 was still available. What else did they change in 82 besides the axle width? Have you weighed it to see if it is under 4,000lbs? Post a picture if you have one Im sure people would like to see it.

unless it was under 4000lbs. the cage would need to be 2.00". But perhaps they could grandfather them in based on proir class 3 status? If they were cleared by SCORE back in the day you could have an argument for the engines there.

Like Moss2 said, weigh the things , The scouts were heavy. But dont let the cage scare you off. To change out to 2" is a pain but you only have to do the cage around the drivers compartment. The score rule book is clear on what bars need to be 2". A bender and a weekend and you could change out that part of the cage. Of course you have to have bender ,grinder, sawsall, and a welder. And know how to use them.

Vorra runs a open truck class that would be perfect for that truck. There are a couple class 3's showing up and the only thing is that you would be racing against class 8's and 1450 trucks. But in my opinion anything is possible and that is why the class attitude is "Just Bring It"
If interested visit www.vorra.net I would be willing to answer any questions you have. Hope this helps good luck
Thanks

The group t in VORRA has worked out pretty well. some of the trucks suffer a little in. short course but have done well in the desert . good choice for a place to race

Hi your motor is good to go, just make sure you get it weighed and measured and put the bigger tube cage installed. If you have any questions let me know, Thanks Tim
