well to say the least it was a very long and interesting day. matt (my dad) started the race tandem lined up against moss with the old EB behind us, only three in class. moss took off quickly until we caught him at rm 18 i believe at the rock pile. we stayed within seeing distance, about 20 seconds to a minute from then on to the end of lap 1. at the start of lap 1 we passed moss in his pits and at rm 7 he passed us back. we passed him back at the rock garden rm 20 or so and put some distance on him.
at pit b (rm 44) on the second lap gale got in with rod hall and they went off with about a 15 minute lead. right around mile 65 moss eventually caught gale and picked up a 15 minute lead by mile 73 at it stayed that way until the start line. little did we know gale hit a hole/ drove off something (he wasnt too clear on it) and broke both front leafs severely at rm fifty something slowing us down quite a bit. we couldnt see the break at pit D rm 73 and waved him on so he drove half a lap with no front suspension.
at the end of lap two we swapped out both front leafs in about an hour where noah (my uncle) hopped in for lap 3 with about an hour and fifteen minute deficit. we cut it to less than an hour as we heard moss was down at rm 44 and we were at rm 20. after fixing a flat the gap was about an hour. it was around sunset when noah came in to pit d at rm 73 and they were losing volts. we were only able to run two lights which killed our ability to pick up time. by the end of lap three the truck completely shut off and we had to replace the alternator.
starting lap four around ten we were fighting to make time as a 3 hour lap was a good pace and the course was ten times rougher than it had started. we heard moss was down with tranny issues but had gotten going again so the goal was to squeeze in a finish. the truck made it to rm 7 on the final lap before losing volts and completely shutting off. we knew it would keep draining power from somewhere and time was too tight so we were forced to put it on the trailer.

all in all it was a fun and exciting day as the competition between the class 3's and 3700's were close amongst each other. but it was disappointing to dnf as the truck was running competitively and the issues were strange. pictures and videos coming soon

Thanks for the story Nick. It was a lot of fun running with you guys. It was a good match until we both started having problems. Still fun trying to figure out what the other guys problems are and where they are! Don will probably get a full story out on our long day, but I got to finish the final 80 miles with only first gear.

Great report, Nick! Amazing how racers just keep going and going in spite of all the problems.
