Finally got my beams today. I'm going to begin work on cut-n-turn, lengthening, trussing and adding uniballs. For those of you that don't know me, which is most of you, my projects tend to take a while.

I'll start by sandblasting the parts. Then I'll build a set of jigs to facilitate the modification. It will hold the beams at both ends and in the middle securely. I'll cut the ends, pull them out on a prebuilt track and pivot the knuckles. This will all be done with the outer knuckles, spindles and axles in place to ensure proper clearance through the process. The intent is to mimic the Camburg 4 over units. This is my first go at this, so I'm certain to learn alot along the way.

My welds will not be TIG'd, nor will they look as nice as a pro fabber, but they will be plenty strong. Question: I've been planning to weld and gusset the pivot brackets on the frame/crossmember. Is that wise, necessary/unnecessary, adviseable, etc?

Good luck with those beams and post pics as you go if you can.
As for gusseting the pivot; if there just the stock one's you probably don't have to as I've never heard of anybody having problems with their stock ones.
However if it's all torn down and accessible it certainly wouldn't be a bad idea.

Man that's a nice work table too. I think i'm going to have to ditch my cumbersome wood one and fab something up like that.

Thanks for the input pig. My mini welding table is one of the best things I've ever put time into. It's not very flat, but it sure is nice to weld at a comfortable height. Here's a pic of the whole thing.

Did you ever get some photos of your beams? Here's a picture of some recently acquired toys that will compliment my beam project. The shock is a 16", so I'll probably just sell it to help fund other parts.

I've started using supermotors.net. You can upload whatever size you have to their site and then copy and paste into your thread. It does the sizing for you. If you don't mind, I'll PM my email and so you can send them direct.

people, please, please, hold your applause till after the race. please.:D
it took me a while to be able to weld like that. still consider myself in training. too.

the lines from the marker are just index lines. i draw them on there first as reference. i cut them, then clamp a straight edge on my marks to line up the beams so they come out straight. i extended them 1.5" each side. this way i am not going to "border line" the rules any. as far as what chupa calls "cut and turn", this has not been done yet. alot of places will do this without having the beams on the car (exchange). you can alighn it afterwards, and hope that when they welded the "cup" back onto the beam, they did not go so far out that you will have alighment issues. the best way, IMO, is to have them on the truck, set your ride height, set your camber, then tack them in place, take the knuckels apart again, and weld them up. lots more work, but i think the only way to do it. we are setting up our ride at 2 degress camber at ride height, and maybe about 5-7 degress caster. we have not cycled it with the beams on yet, but our estimates are 16" of good usable travel. we can more than likely get more, but i think beamed trucks get such nasty camber at droop that it created more harm than good. i will post more pics as i go. it will go back to my thread though, so i dont continue to hijack this one.

Yikes
05-08-2007, 06:58 PM
You're not hijacking. This has been good information for my build. Thanks roach! My beams should be back from sandblasting tomorrow, so then I can get started.

With that much negative camber at ride height, what will it be at full bump? I've seen camber issues on beamed trucks cause more damage at full bump than at full droop.

I was thinking more at the steering knuckle, spindle, etc. Keep in mind this point of view is coming from what I've seen with 2wd knuckles. I know the TTB parts are much stronger but I don't know at what point they will fail.

The steering knuckle and spindle are both designed to take the greatest loads vertically. When the front end is at full bump with excessive camber, instead of loading it vertically, the force is trying to pull the wheel off the hub/steering knuckle/spindle. On 2wd steering knuckles the spindle (bearing snout) is pressed in. Because of the pulling forces created with big negative camber, the snout likes to loosen and eventually pull out of the knuckle. This doesn't happen when negative camber is kept to a minimum. Granted the TTB the spindle is bolted on, but what's it breaking point? You may never have any issues with this but I figured It was something to consider.

Are you machining the spindle and steering knuckle to use 12 bolts per spindle? In a race application I wouldn't run it stock. Especially with a lot of negative camber.

One last thought that I don't think will apply to your truck. Excessive caster can create problems with tie rods. At full bump with a ton of caster the tie rods are under huge compression loads that can cause them to bend.

This isn't the kind of update I was planning on, but......both of my beams cracked in the typical places. Rather than just weld up the crack, I decided to modify the passenger side to prevent it from happening again. Fortunately I have the other set of beams to utilize for making templates. The pic below shows the first piece fitted on the spare beam.

Unfortunately, I didn't take step by step pictures, but below is the end result under the Bronco. It's far from pro quality, but given all the work was done while laying under the rig, it's as good as it's going to get. Should be plenty strong.

Ha!! :D Not trying to tease. I'm building a long overdue rockcrawler cage for this.

http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/539345/fullsize/scotts-rig.jpg

It's my first cage (and the rig's owner is fully aware of that), so I'm learning as I go. It's been rather difficult, because the rig has nothing square left on it, I'm not working on a level surface and it's his DD, so I only get a quick set-up and a few hours at a time to work on it. It's good experience though! .....and before you comment about the door bars, that's how he likes them.

Its taking forever and a day to get time to build on the 9"...seems like when the time is avail...the parts are enroute. god I hate Murphy.
