What are the best years to look for when looking for a tranny to start with for building a C6 for Off Road Racing? Thanks. Jerry

The best desert C6 is a TH400!

Ouch!!!!
Ouch!!!!
That's what I said when I learned that:
The TH400 Makes significantly LESS heat then the C6 when used exactly the same way.
Add in the fact that they cost less and they are every bit as strong, given equal prep...

If you haven't already switched to the TH400, there isn't really any particular year that is better to start with, as long as it has the bellhousing pattern that matches your engine of choice. The Windsor pattern C6 was very common in the 80's vintage Broncos and pickups. I have used one from a car, a Bronco and an F250. You take the case and pretty much start from scratch on the inside anyway, since there aren't any Super Cobra Jet versions sitting around out there. It is useful to start with a core that has the tailshaft and tailhousing that you will end up with. I think there are three lengths to choose from there. All of the later transfer cases use the same pattern, but the tail housing will determine how long or short your driveshafts are, its all a compromise. I can tell you the front driveshaft will hit the trans case if you use a short tail housing and a 205 transfer case.
I think Roach had a C6 ready to go that he was trying to get rid of a while back.
