View Full Version : Classthree fantasy come along and run with me…
Looking back at the days of yore when men were men and… ;)
I still (somewhere) have a picture of James Garner, with a smoke in his mouth at some long forgotten pit in Baja; racing something whacked like a 455 Old’s…
Em were da days boys and girlz, em were da days! :)
Taking a chassis of say a 70’s K5 or 78-9 Bronk (solid axle’s both).
The cost of many things will be roughly the same like:
Full cage and all the safety equipment.
Keep the suspension Class legal.
Add in a 400-BHP engine and Automatic.
Build a low buck racer that is 100% street legal. Drive it to the race, FINISH the race and drive it home. Pit support is fuel and what you can carry… Figure a 1000-mile minimum drive to the race and the same home…
The goal is not even remotely to win anything, rather to survive and finish!
This is way old skewel!
Could it still be done?
How would you build it? Suspension travel, Parts selection, Fuel tank size, spare parts, & things like that.

The courses are pretty rough these days. You may be surprised how hard you have to drive and how little you can stop and still make the 25mph average time limit in a limited low buck vehicle. I know it has been done several times that I know of in the stock full class. In the Baja 2000 some guys drove their F150 to the race, made it tothe finish in Cabo and drove it all the way home again. I definitely wouldnt try it in a Blazer for various reasons and I dont think it would be very low buck. I think Ramsey on RDC has done it in a 4wd F150 as well. Practice not sleeping for 36 hours to prepare!

Yes, it can be done and has been done. Most of us choose not to do it because it is impractical. Most of us have spools in the rear and more importantly, we don't want to screw around with insurance and smog inspections.
Insurance is no big thing (its' just an olt truck... right?) and I do not have Smog Inspections... Yet...

Curiosity why not a K5 if other then Leafsproingerz?
Basically My oh'pine is the Bronco is the best choice for platform.
But I've been wrong before!
I have a thing for the 78-9 as I like the way they 'look'.
Toss that out and IFS or solid? Pro'z? Con'z?
Suspension Cover? Spring Bkt?
Rear spring set-up?
I'm not looking to steal anybodys set-up just a basic guideline for what kind of parts have proven themselves.
I'm a thousand miles away, There are virtually no shops in the area I can hang out at...
Look at the projects in the shop and attempt to not get kicked out of!
At this point I'm seriously thinking about dropping my Ranger build and building for Class three...
Though if I do I'd have to find a driver, what you wanna bet that is the easy part? ;) And I’m at least 08 away maybe 09:(

I just dont like how the chevys of the Blazer era were put together. You have the leaf fronts, small axles, steering issues, frame needs help. I guess the main thing is I cant think of any that have been successful in the past.
I wasnt a real 79 Bronco fan either till we started racing one. I will race most anything I get a chance to. Had some great times racing a 75 Cadillac!

I don't remember the exact year, 1998-ish? There was a couple of guys from New Hampshire or Maine or there abouts that drove an Early Bronco down to Baja, ran the 500 or the 1000 (I think they timed out) and then drove home.

Really? http://www.thewebwheeler.com/forums/images/smilies/humm_smilie.gif
Would it be a conflict of interest, If Blanco gets built Class legal & you race with me? http://www.thewebwheeler.com/forums/images/smilies/shrug.gif
Lets say we just do some MDR/MORE etc race's
Cause it looks like Blanco is on! For Class 3!
I'd love to have my Buds teach me a thing or two..
Since I've never raced before...
If you'll race with me, Its 100% that I'll build it legal! http://www.thewebwheeler.com/forums/images/smilies/hug.gif
Then of course i'm gonna need to figure out a Trailer & tow rig ETC.
But if its local race like Lucurne Valley, I could use my AAA card! http://www.thewebwheeler.com/forums/images/smilies/HistericalSmiley.gif

Ya but funnay!:D
When we bought and started building out here I was 'working' at a chain auto-parts store for minum cash flow while I build this place… Got tired of the kiddiez and quit and went back to making real money...
Anywayz… I would get the same old question.
So how many tweeky houses on your street?
A sad, but true commentary on so many things today. I got so tired of it I will now respond with... "You mean besides mine?"
Dust.
Who has decided to build the Ranger as a trail toy
and then as time allows
build a Classthree:D

Have a friend who has done that with a 7 truck ....and we drive our prerunners from Northern Cal. to baja pre run the 1000 much of the course and drive'm home average off road about 700 mi., total trip 2k+ miles for the last 5 years on my truck...we just never can make the 25mph aveage because we "code red" too often!!!!!

It seems feasable and since personally my only goal after finishing would be to not time out before doing so...
I wonder how (if) it would change the build?

Code Red in my book is a Tecate Beer(red can) and Code Yellow is what happens after drinking a couple of Code Reds and driving down a washboard road.
