so did any of the "real" jeeps (ie: CJ/TJ/Wrangler/Ect) ever come with a factory V8? i'm almost certain they did .. but i'm just checking.
if so a V8 powered jeep could be a neat basis for a Class 3. i mean i know that it would suck with the short wheelbase .. but i think that would be just plain fun! :D don't think you'd win out-right (may not even finish) .. but it would be cool none the less.
ohh and about the "real" jeep statement above ... don't flame me too hard! hahaha :p
Does anybody remember the 4WP conejo off road wrangler, that raced in the mid 90īs, that rig had a V8, canīt find the pictures anymore do.... I believe they were class champs.

Yes, that was Mike Swellingers ride and he had a 401 amc motor in it. Back in the 70"s jeeps came with and option of a 304 amc motor from the factory.

so you could run a CJ with only the AMC engine huh? see this is starting to get into the "grey" area of Class 3 ...
i would imagine that you wouldn't be able to run a TJ or Wrangler with the AMC though...

Well, the Grand Cherokee came with a V-8. But I don't think that just because Jeep made a different truck with a V-8 that you should be able to drop it into a car that never came with it in the first place. opinion

FWIW:
The 1970's CJ's had factory 304's and both autos and manuals.
The CJ7 is longer then the 5 with the CJ8 (scrambler) being longer yet and the CJ6 IIRC is the longest of all, though I am not sure that it had the V8 option.

I believe the only CJ that came with a V-8 was the CJ-5 with a 304. And yes, a TJ Unlimited with a 103.5 wheelbase +2 would be a great candidate. Coil overs on all four corners. As much as it would make sense to stick a 401 into one, I don't know if Savage will allow it.

CJ5s and CJ7s both came with V8s in the '70s. In the early, early days (pre V8s) a lot of folks raced CJ5s (Rod Hall started in one, for example), but when the CJ7s came out in '76, most folks switched to them. LOTS of people raced the 7s with V8s in them - the Schwellinger truck was probably the most successful over the years although Don Adams had a lot of wins in his truck too.
Most people wouldn't want to race them today because of the rough ride with 4 leaf springs and fairly slow speeds. There's been a fairly well-built CJ7 with a 401 in it for sale here in AZ for YEARS. Nice truck, but no one wants to run them anymore.

I forgot about the late 70's CJ-7 with the t-400's and quadratracs. Yeah, the Scramblers and 7's were fast until the ttb Bronco's, namely Ashley's, spanked them. Not even close. Which is exactly what's going to happen when someone does another top level ttb, right Ricardo?
