How do you guys stay cool in them when your out in the desert heat

& what might be some things to keep in mind when looking for a Suit/Helmet?

I mean I tend to sweat very easily & dont look forward to having to wearing all the required protective clothing...

Even the Idea of wearing glove's while driving bugs me..

Thanks for what ever input you can add.

you will sweat, but you will not notice, your'e gonna be busy, you will notice if your air system of your helmet goes off, you just neet your head to feel cool, if your driving you will need gloves, i drove once without gloves and i end up with my hands full of blister, full of painful bubbles, i couldn't do anything for some days after the race,. .

Gloves are required per rules, No?

I'm wondering if I could just rig my A/C up to my helmet for now to help keep my head cool?

( Note to self http://www.thewebwheeler.com/forums/images/smilies/humm_smilie.gif look into a nice soft non-Blister causing steering wheel. )

So we dont need to protect our hands & feet from fire?

Do they sell fire resistant racing shoes?
I suppose they do for the formula one & NASCAR Racers?

yes, but unfortuantly, the fact is that in our class, we will be hiking for help more often than not. when you race class1 or trophy, those guys can afford to have someone come and get them:D those fire shoes are not comfortable for hiking!!! i have always ran good leather construction boots. all BS aside, if you are in a fire long enough to burn thru your work boots, chances are you are in real bad shape. i would definatly do the gloves though. lets face it, in a fire, you need your hands to remove seat belts, window nets, grabing grab handles, etc, etc, etc. cant do that if your hands are burning:eek:

Good input, Thanks!

Might you recomend some race gloves That I might start pre-running with to get use to wearing them?

I think Sparco makes Baja offroad racing shoes now. They have a little more protection against the Baja cactus etc. I never liked the idea of hiking, working a shovel etc with the standard 'ballerina' racing shoes either. You can always go IronMan Stewart with no gloves and open helmet but I'm not that tough I guess.

Cam, check out DJ Safety. They're near my house off the 5 freeway and San Fernando Road. I had them make me custom 3 point seat belts for my CJ and I believe they sell suits and gloves. Hey they maybe a good company to hit up for a sponsorship.

you can always wear Nomex socks under the boots for a little more protection along with the Nomex undies...

I read somewhere that up until just a few years ago, NASCAR did not even require fire suits in their rules! The drivers took it upon themselves to find the very best stuff to protect themselves, or not.

There are bargains on safety stuff, but in the end, you get what you pay for. Short of severed limbs, drivers say that burns are the absolute worst thing to recover from. Both Robby Gordon and Dale Jr. have had to sit out races recovering from burn injuries in recent years. Neither were from a NASCAR race.

Research it, and then get what will protect you from what might happen in the racing you do. The rule book and tech inspection will only give you minimal guidelines to start from. Never take short cuts on your safety equipment, even if it keeps you from a race, its just not worth the risk.

As far as sweating, that may be another reason to go without a windshield, maximize airflow!!!

well I was wondering if there were some better under clothing or materials that help when sweating?

& I've been burned once pretty bad from hot radiator water!

& boy does that suck...
the air touching it hurts!...

Ok, the nomex fire retardant overall its a must.
The silt filtration fresh air conduit melon protector allways on.
The blister protection gloves must be at hand or hands in this case.
Seen the sparco off road shoes, saving some money to buy a pair, in the mintime, hikking boots or some crosstrainig shoes can make your walk more pleasurable.
theres something else you need to consider..... THE CREEPING EFFECT!!!!
It apears wen wearing loose boxers or short underwear and the light movement of your butt in the restrainig racing seats, after a short period of time, you will have an off road wedgee; try if you can, to pull your undies out while driving tru some woops wearing a full face helmet, gloves, one piece suit in a race seat with a 5 point harness...... IT SUCKS!! it is not a happy memory.
It only happened to me once back wen i raced a class 9, the next race I tried a pair of spandex/licra under pants i use while raiding my ATV and it worked, no more O.R.W.!!! In the 03 BAJA 1000 I co-dogged for Chupas an his brother for the first time, from the start in Ensenada, all the way to San Felipe (650 -+ miles) for 26 hours, and all of them wedgee free.

There are some cool suits out there that have a series of tubes that run through a vest. I think I have seen them somewhere like Racers Warehouse, a mail order outfit. The water circulates through an ice chest with a pump. You are limited by the ice capacity in the ice chest, but I would assume it would go for at least several hours. They have the same setup for parker pumper hose that cools the air going to your head. Like was said above, if you can cool your head or torso, it takes care of the rest of the body. I can tell you this works well on heating systems when it is cold.

Now didn't you say you were going to have your air conditioning system anyway?

I think the Atkinson Bronco has an AC system with pump but they run the pumper air through it instead of trying to cool the vehicle interior. I haven't seen it so dont know any details. You could get some heat that way too.

Hey FJ, you got a link to those spandex/licra under pants?
where does someone buy such things?

No more ORW! http://www.thewebwheeler.com/forums/images/smilies/17.gif I like that.
& as for racing with the A/C on Yes, thats my fantasy....
But we'll see how well that works..

I wonder if Dylan raced with his on the whole way through the 250?

I got them from Sport Atority, I think they are base ball or soccer issued, paded or unpaded. IŽll look for a link.

Take a piece of that lycra and foam pad and hold it over your stove. I dont think that is what I want next to my skin if it gets real hot. I would stick with cotton, wool or nomex instead of something that has to get peeled off with your skin bonded to it.

I guees your right, there must be someting similar in the nomex department.

I just prefer to wear shorts under my racing suit......
