It's hard to say how they compare speed wise. There were some BIG engines in a lot of those early trucks, 401's in CJ's, etc. On the other hand the shocks and springs were not even close to anything we have today. Another factor was the race courses themselves. These days we are restricted to pretty much the same roads over and over again, and the whoops just get deeper and deeper, even in Mexico. 40 Trophy Trucks with 800 hp will dig 4 foot deep whoops in one race, they didn't have that back then. Now you have the speed limits on the highways in Mexico..... The differences go on and on. The stuff on the videos showed some really stiffly sprung racers! Even the class 8's looked that way, more like what the C3's look like now.

What class would the sedans run today? Sportsman only, I suspect.

There used to be two Rancheros that I know of that raced. Ak Miller raced one that Stroppe built back in the late '60s - '67 or '68 Baja 1000. It was a '67 or '68 Ranchero. The Mosers (Spy Racing) raced a '64-'65 Ranchero (Falcon body style) for several years too. I thought that was always a neat car.
I think that video was from Parker in '84? when it snowed. Crazy race.

Probably Sportsman since Class 6 disappeared years ago.

I think he races TT with a special exception from Sal. That thing would clean up against anything from the eighties. It's amazing; the advances that have been made and the improvement in attention to detail over the years.

If VW brings alot of extra attention to the Baja than we might see a class for rally sedans. It would be appropriate for them to take over the 6 Class. Too cool...
