Hey guys,

I assume most of you that have roll cages tie them into the frame but does that mean you run full metal body pucks/mounts or do you keep the rubber mounts and add rubber mounts to the frame tie in brackets. I've seen it done both ways. Any pics would be helpful as well.

Thanks Cam. No issue with the tie ins cracking because of the flexing from the body mounts?

Race it a couple seasons and there will be cracking issues with about anything attached to the body. We still have hard urethane mounts and are getting more and more attachments to the cage as sheetmetal threatens to fall off. Envision hooking your truck up to a giant paint shaker for 24 hours at a time.

Hey Cam, Looking at the photos I am wondering if the main cage is 1.75 or 2". It looks like ERW tube from the visible seams.

ERW
HREW=Hot Rolled Electric Welded.
ERW is short hand, as is EW, HRERW, etc, etc...
SCORE requires DOM or Drawn Over Mandrel.
<O:pOn DOM it is real hard to se the weld seam unlike what is in your Pix…<O:p
Use the wrong material and you no race….<O:p

"& here's the B hoop is attached to the top of the front Leaf spring mount."

Is that legal for the cage for mounting? it would help me much with Bronco II's narrow frame.

how about some honesty here..................

i hope you did not go over there and ask for a cage that maybe you can race down the road. becouse if you did, that is "NOT" what you are getting right now. that material is not allowed by score. when you go tech, they will fail you. only your main cage needs to be either DOM or chromo. any and all else can be the material that you show us now. you should not need more than between 80' and 100' of "main cage" material. and becouse the weights are so close, i would go 2" .120. if you cannot afford chromo, go DOM. but check the price yourself. call around. last i checked - chromo and DOM were almost the same price becouse of the demand for steel in construcion. only a slight difference. anyway, if i were you i would find out before it gets too late. just looking out for you. i would rather see you behind me at a race, than on the sidelines becouse of something like this.

Ok, I appreciate your looking out for me.

But can we move onto some examples of what this thread was orignaly asking instead of my build?

I've been the complete topic since I posted my pics..

& If I dont get to pass Tech.
I will have a one Bad Ass Pre-Runner. http://www.thewebwheeler.com/forums/images/smilies/7.gif

One more questions, when building a cage for Class 3, how does Tech Inspector know what kind of tubing is used if your cage is painted or powder coated?

I dont think they actually check on that. If you have an exposed tube end someplace it is obvious if it is not DOM though. You can feel the seam often on the outside of non DOM as well. They do test ultrasonically the wall thickness of the required tubes. The also check the tube diameter of the required tubes. Weld checks with magnaflux and mirror. Good luck building a sub 4000lb full size if you have 1.75" tube though.

Thanks for the info Moss. I've always wondered about that.

I have found that no matter how much you tie you cage to the cab when it is rubber mounted it will crack the cab some where from the flexing. I would recommend some aluminum body mounts. And when it is done don't for get to do the core support. As for the mounting of the cage I would recommend mounting it to the frame with a plate under it to spread the load and keep it from cracking and tearing away. The spring hanger mount may be league but it makes me a little scared because I have seen a few come off during a race... mind you I don't know what the conditions were when it happen. The best of luck to you.

I agree the stock hangers (and frame around bolts) have problems when you start hammering on them.
