This is Ron Johnson from Tacoma Washington, I have been bitten by the Baja bug, It all started last year when i bought Vic Hickeys 1969 Chevy C-10 4X4 truck that was raced in the 1968 baja 1000 and it was owned by Steve Mqueen, And i also have another a Vic hickey built 1969 Olds 442 that was raced in Baja by James Garner, Iam in the process of building a updated version of Vic Hickeys 1969 Chevy baja Blazer for class 3 racing next year, My goal is to make the 500 in 2008, This is a great forum and the Baja people and a great group of racers, Thanks Ron

The 1969 C-10 truck was built right after Vic built the 2 Baja boots, My truck was driven by Cliff Coleman, It raced in the 68 Baja 1000 and riverside, In 1970 when Steve McQueen bought the two Baja Boots he also bought the two 69 trucks, And Mickey Thompson raced it in 1970, The truck is being restored to its 1969 100% correct race condition, and i will unvail it at the 40th anniversary party and it will be at the 1000 this year

My plan is to buy all the rare Baja race cars and trucks that Vic Hickey built, And any other rare cars and trucks, get them all restored and show them to everyone so they can see where it all started, my 1969 Class 3 Blazer will look like the Hickey blazer but it will be built with the best parts i can build or buy, My main goal is to have fun ,

Ron:
Welcome aboard! Those are some of the coolest old school photos I have seen for a long time. Did you own the Banshee when it was displayed at the Baja 2000 party at the Petersen museum in Sept. 2000? I had the privilege of seeing it on display there.
Do you happen to own the #25 car shown in some of the pictures you posted? I believe until recently it was owned by someone in the central CA valley somewhere (used to have some pics on my computer somewhere of it). Not in very good shape at the time. Just curious if you bought it.
Thanks for posting and I look forward to more cool pics!

I own the 1969 c-10 4X4, And the #25 Steel body 442, I just made the deal on the fiberglass body Banshee and hope to bring it home real soon, As soon as i get it on the trailer i will take to to Rod Halls Off Road Hall Of Fame Museum in Reno for a 6 month display, As soon as my 69 truck is done i will take it to the 1000 this year and then display it at Petersons Aotomotive Museum for 6 months also, The #25 car was in bad shape but it wont be to hard to get back to 100% race condition, I just got a good lead on the 69 Blazer in the photos, And iam also building the 69 Blazer clone for next years 500,I have my work cut out

I'd say at this point you're probably the world's leading Vic Hickey-built race vehicle collector. Now you need to get one of the Baja Boots into your garage.

The truck had two original custom 16" rims with center offset that cragar made for Hickey, Then i tracked down another owner and got two more rims , And then i got the last two rims with the original tires still on the rims from Bob Law who owns the original Baja Boot

Yeah, that was the car I was referring to earlier. I had a similar shot of it with the John Deere in the background. I dug out a 1970 copy of Popular Hot Rodding with that car and Garner on the cover w/article inside to make sure it was the right car.
I saw Garner in LA last fall at an event at the Petersen's. He's not doing so hot.

All that iam doing is for the love of restoring vintage baja race cars and trucks, I only have been doing this for a short time, 8 months now and if any one out there runs across a part of racing history please let me know if its for sale, My goal is to restore these pieces of history and put them at races - shows - museums and stand back and see if it makes people smile and think of where all of this started, And i will also be on the race course eating dust, I will keep you all posted on the construction of my Recreation of the Vic Hickey 1969 Blazer built to current standards, Baja is more then a race ita a life and it has changed my life and i will have never seen it untill 2 weeks from now

I've been watching this thread and just love it. My dad raced in that era and what you're doing makes me feel a part of it, like it's still alive. A very big thanks to you! I've always been a Garner fan as well. Getting the 442 restored by the 1000 looks like quite the task. Will definitely be keeping an eye on your projects.
