B&M, or Hurst....
Why? have used both over the last 11 years in my OWN vehicles, and grew up with one or the other in my parents vehicles....
Got a quarter stick in the bronc now...

I've noticed that the Art Carr Shifter seems very Popular with many off road racers..

& I like the fact that its gated keeping me from accidently popping it into neutral or even worse, reverse.

Okay, other reasons, I use the B&M.....
CHEAPER, damn strong...
snap a cable? Pepe Boys has them ON THE RACK 44 bucks fro a 5 footer...
easy to maintain...
You can get a B&M, fo rless than 200... just need to get the right brackets for your tranny....bracket kit is usually about 50 bucks...
Some models (IIRC) have the kit IN the box... I dont remember...
the Q/S is something I had kicking around...

Art Carr shifters are the only way to go, I have tried the B&M and the rest and finally broke down to buy the best. The others work fine until you get sand and dirt in them, with the Art Carr you will not have problems.

I agree the Art Carr/Winters style is the best for simple, functional durability. I didnt know there was an option to use them for an E4OD. Who makes the manual valve body for that trans? I thought you were stuck using buttons and wires if you used that trans but I haven't researched it much.

Yeah I've been wondering about that too...
I dont know if that will work for the E-4OD...
I'll be looking into it. http://www.thewebwheeler.com/forums/images/smilies/humm_smilie.gif

Another vote for the Art Carr/Winters style shifter - nothing better imho. Blanco - check with Steve Culhane to see what he recommends about using one with an E40D. I'm like Don - I didn't think you could use the shifter with that trans, but Steve would know if you could. Don't have his # handy.

I just got off the phone with Steve Culhane http://bestsmileys.com/talking/16.gif & he said,
Yes I can use the shifter & shift it manually But he's Never seen a manual valve body for them.
& said as long as you have a Button for the OverDrive you'd be fine. ( '90 Bronco came factory with a Dash mounted button for the OverDrive :) )
He says he see no issues shifting it manually except at high speeds it might not wanna drop into 1st gear.
& just stick it in 3rd gear & it will shift like a Regular Automatic.
& then he also told me about his friend that has a 500 HP Pre-Runner Runner that has that exact set up, an E-4OD & a Art Carr shifter & it works fine..

we are looking for a shifter, now that we are swaping to a c4, we wil install a new valve body, full manual reverse, shifts only when you ask for and also puts the gears in reverse order, p, N,1.2.3. so, it's easier to go from reverse to first gear, the valve body cost no less than $200, the shifter another $250 +-, plus cables, cooling system, mm,,, well, but, i think it will be worth the investment, right?, so, what did you end up buying for the bronco, i mean, what shifter did you bought?:)

You wanna see expensive, you should see the tranny I put in a buddies 2002 mustang... 4.6 SOHC, ORIGINALLY 5spd...
Put in a C4, reverse, full manual, with t-brake...oh yeah, 3400 convertor too..
The art carr looks nice, BUT, I am a big fan of the "slap" shifters, NO MATTER WHAT, you will NOT miss a gear.
But, thats just me...

Throw a couple of shovels full of dirt and gravel inside of a "slap" shifter, and they aren't so happy! An old 4 wheeler I know told me about that one. B&M used to send him all their "new" products to test 30 years ago, and after being stuck out on the trail with a tranny he could not shift, he always went back to the Art Carr. (He also has stories about gages that Auotmeter sent him, he would send back in a box that sounded like marbles when you shook it. Autometer evidently solved that problem, we have not had issues with ours)
Dave G built a gate shifter copy that we use, but (forgive me Dave) it is not quite as pretty, but every bit as functional! And even though Dave works for himself for $4.12/hour, it's probably about a wash on labor cost.

, we don't have any experience with auto trannys, so, i have too many questions, but, well, at the end, what do you recommend, what shifter, brand or, what to look for on a shifter,. :) thks.

No offense, I saw it browsing thorough JGB, it was for a C4, figured Chup might need it. Aren't you looking for one the fits an E4OD??

No worries, remember, I am from New England, and we dont have alot of dust and dirt flying around... rocks, trees, and mud....
I have a quarter stick in the bronc now, again, 'cause I had it kicking around.
IF it doest work, then, I will look into something like an Art Carr..
But, things to think of for sure.
