our class has this feature, to be 4x4, but, how many of us really use it, i mean, during the race, we only used to use it when neccesary,, only if we get stuck, but, the true is that we don't use it to save it, don't want to have more tread and wear on the transfer, front dif, axels etc, at this baja 500 we use it the last half of the race, the chupakabras performed pretty awsome with the 4x4 engaged, i think we were faster with the 4x4 than without it, so, what's the pros and cons? , to be able to use 4x4 and not to use it, are you really saving something? what do u think?
... like retro, they broke the transfer , at that time, you were using the 4x4?
.. till now, we only have replace the oil of the transfer, never has been rebuild or the case open just to check it, so, we have been lucky till now. right.

I try not to use 4wd when in really rough sections where the front tires are getting off the ground on choppy bumps. That is what seems to kill the spider gears in front and axle u-joints. I dont know about how much abuse your t-case will take. Beat on it and find out? That is why we still have a 205.

to get off the ground , that's one of the things that y must fear, we ran with manual tranny and that has been killing our trannys, we have to be very carefull with 2nd gear, you get of the ground with the pedal to the floor and rev up in the air , land hard on high rpm and snapp, good bye 2nd gear, that in a split second, the transfer had survive pretty well till now, my bro has a heavy foot, he has push the chupakabras far than capable, so, he has a score of 2 trannys in a year, haha, he's still blaming the trannys, i already told him his mistakes, and why the tranny is braking, well, we are really looking forward to swap for an automatic tranny, a c4, i just found that its posible to have a c4 with 4x4, so, hope to make that out,. :D

4x4 tracks better at speed than 4x2. Espcecially with a spooled/locked rear. It also recovers speed much more quickly coming out of a turn because of the increased traction. You have to watch the temp of the TCase if you are getting it up to the 80-100mph range though.
I would worry about the chain driven cases in addition to the tranny when you are shock loading them in the bumps. Your best bet would be to do the change to a C4 and a Dana 20 from an early Bronco (I think you need a C5 Bellhousing to mate to the 4.0). Back in the day, we used to use Detriot TruTrac's or Spicer Powerloc's in the front. Not so much because of the traction, but more because they are stronger than spiders. The only problem then is that it places more stress on the shafts/ujoints. . .on thing at a time I guess.

Here's just a bell housing for $300. Wow! Makes the last one look like a great price!

bought it today, we are gonna be working on it, just need to buy the flywheel and turbine, and other things, shifter, oil cooling, and other things, but finnaly found a good automatic tranny for our chupakabras, this is a stock c4, we will buy the valve train or body, the racing one, that one lets u shift only when you ask for it, so, we have some work to do,,:D

Your stock transfer is pretty strong. Going to c4/c5 is good idea the A4LD (your A4ld is stronger than mine) just will not hold up over time. And many times die without any warning.
That was a great deal you got. You most likely will need new drive shafts also. As mentioned the weak link will then become the front axle. I would not put a locker in the d35 for high speed air catching (limited slip should do fine).
Are you using the stock 8.8 in the rear?

for the front we have d35 without posi slip or any locker, the rear stills ford 8.8 with posi slip or limited slip and 4.56 gears, i think we will stay with it, with the 8.8, our next race wll be the 1000, if everything goes ok, if not, well, the 250 next year, so we have plany of time to work on our racer, ...
... we have the manual tranny, we are swaping to c4, this c4 is a little bit short, so we need to extend the front shaft and make short the rear one, need some litte modifications, but i think it will be worth it,. right, so, will see,.. :D
