How many of you have used one on a race, it's really worth the money?, and wich model? , color screen or mono.. been searching for some answers, i believe it can help a lot, but, never used one before, so, we are planning on buying one, found this place http://www.gpsdiscount.com have good prices, i'm interested on this in particular LOWRANCE GLOBALMAP 540C , ..

They're like anything else! Once you have one, you don't know how you survived without it! We've got a Lowrance 6000c in the Bronco, and a 5000c in my chase truck!

Get a color unit! I used to have a monochrome one, and once I looked at the color screen, I would never go back! The resolution is much greater, and with the color, you can have a LOT more info on the screen and it's still easy to read!

Don't know anything about the newer models, but I'm sure they're comparable to the older ones or better! Get as big of a screen as you can afford, it sucks to have a $500-1000 instrument that you can only read when parked!

Also look at boatersworld.com and amazon.com, they're a bit cheaper than PCI.

I've been thinking of purchasing a GPS as well and everyone was pointing me to the Lowrance Baja 480C model. I've been told that it's worth getting the color screen instead of the black and white screen. I believe the 480c maybe discounted now but it's worth looking into.

the lowrance 540c it's the replacement of the old 480c, this one have a 5" color screen, and the 6000c has a 7" color screen, so that makes 2" of diference and about $800 dif. too, so,, i believe we are gonna get the 540c, haha, you know, still a lot of things to pay prior to the race, so, thks a lot on your advice, so, see yaa then. thks again..:)

pss. bajabronco13,,, you no longer are going to find the 480c, so, get the 540c

i download an emulator of the gps, to familiarize with that instrument, it's coool, just go to www.lowrance.com and download an emulator of the product you want to try. ok. byes..

I have the LOW. 5000C, they work great. When broke down you can give your support your exact location also. Not that I know anything about breaking :) Also lots of other info like time and speed

so, a GPS it's a must have not just for a race car, also for any chase that you may have, we are on our way to buy one of those, looking forward for a lowrance 7200c(7"color display +- $800dlls) or the 540c (5"color display +-$500 dlls).. found a sponsor for that, haha,so hope he buys the 7200c.or the 6500c.

I have to chime-in... I agree. Once you have it, ya can't do without it. I try not to look at ours, so it's pointed at the co-driver. Go with color, for sure (there are different routes some-times). It helps with confidence (am I on the course??)... It also helps with "legal" short-cuts when BFG has "approved" either-or options. I used it once to pass a pesky 5-1600 that I had been trying to pass for what seemed like hours. He stuck to the marked course, and I took an "approved" and well-marked optional route, and finally popped out in front of his nasty dust. I never saw him again, once the tables had turned. I cannot imagine racing the 1000 without it. My 5 inch version is just fine, in my opinion... but I'm sure bigger is better, as they say!! I'd love to have one in the pre-runners and chase trucks, but can't do that just yet (maybe if I quit racing, but then what is the point??) he he
