FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 15, 7007

Sacramento, CA – The SCORE Class 3 race team of brothers Don and Ken Moss, returned victorious from the SCORE Baja 500 Desert Race held recently in northern Baja Mexico. In a record field of 492 starters, only 283 survived to cross the finish line in the alloted time. The Moss brothers finished in 14 hours and 40 minutes, a full two hours ahead of their nearest class 3 competitor and were the 79th overall finisher.

In a race that has been described as a silt and rock fest, the Moss brothers piloted their ’79 Ford Bronco to take their 23rd class win and third Baja 500 title. During their final precheck of the Bronco on the eve of the race, the crew discovered some questionable parts. The team swapped out the tie rod ends and in the process found cracks in the output shaft of the steering box, necessitating a swap of that part as well. Fortunately, the only other issue the Black Bronco crew had to deal with was the loss of the right rear brake rotor, a bent caliper and sheared brake line about half way through the race. A full repair was not attempted and the Bronco finished the race with reduced braking. The drivers’ post race report is mostly about traffic jams that were encountered on the course due to stuck racers and the challenges to either help clear the course or get around the obstacle. The drivers and co-drivers were also quite happy with the addition of two HID lights on the Bronco and the huge difference they made.

Don Moss was quick to reflect upon the company support that made this entry successful. The first is River City Differentials in Rancho Cordova. “We did not have any gear related issues and have not since they started setting up our gears,” Don reports. “Deaver Suspension for setting us up with a reliable set of rear leaf springs and bushings. BF Goodrich for their bullet proof tires that we torture tested for 420 solid miles. They also provided the 3 pits where fuel was added, along with GPS course files and map books. King Shocks for setting us up with some very reliable coil over front shocks. In addition, they brought down replacement rod end bearings for the rear shocks when we found they were shot after the pre-running. ATO Advanced Transmissions in Rancho Cordova for building up a manual valve body for the transmission and providing technical assistance for the rest of the build up that I did. We had been having a variety of issues with the transmissions in the past few races. This time there was not a single hiccup and the transmission ran cool in every gear, through some very extreme conditions. I was very happy with the performance. American Racing Wheels for providing new wheels – a set of Teflon coated ATX series Mojave wheels that put up with some incredible abuse.”
Don and Ken were also grateful to their Black Bronco crew – who somehow manage to get time away from their families and jobs several times a year, to head to Mexico to chase a Bronco through the desert.

The SCORE Baja 500 was filmed and is expected to air later this year as a one hour special on The Outdoor Channel. The next race is scheduled for September in Primm, Nevada.
