I was hoping some of you with Knowledge might post a few lessons for the rest of us that have no idea what Our Lowrance GPS units Can do?
I know that you can bring up a full screen speedo & recall your top speed.
& that you can start out on a trail/Course & have it highlight your progression through it so that you can follow it backwards & get your self home...
I also know that if its a a recognized area you can zoom in out out for more detail...
Such as if your out at Plaster city & end up lost, you can zoom out enough to see where the Hwy is & then head in that direction to get home....
But how do you do these things & what else can the Lowrance 540/480 etc do?
Thanks for all your input in advance.

Thanks for doing this Cam!
It would be cool if someone could give us newbies the basics. Who knows, some of us may end up chasing, or pitting for you, you guys don't want us in the wrong spot do ya?

I've got some experience with the older Lowrance units (2400,5000c, and 6000c), and I'd be happy to answer some specific questions for ya'll, but as for the best way to figure it out.... There's only one - Read the owner's manual! (Ignore the sonar and fish-finding section - they aren't too applicable in our world unless you're going to co-drive in TT#76!)

that was funny, haha, ok, we should start by downloading an emulator, enter www.lowrance.com and downlad an emulator, the 4800 looks similar to the 480c and 540c, its not a color screen, but works pretty well, on this emulator you can load your maps and routes, so, download that emulator so we can start the lessons, ..
...that emulator lets you see on your pc how the gps works, ok.:)

Product Emulators
Product Emulators are PC-based applications that look and function like the actual product. Emulators are available for most current products, and many legacy products. Displays MapCreate™ 6 custom maps and sonar chart recordings. Useful for comparing products, learning how to use the various features or reviewing previously recorded field trips at home.

I'm confused as to what one I should Down load?
Lowrance Product Emulators
Lowrance Product Emulators are downloadable PC-based software applications that simulate, on your computer, the operation of an actual unit. These virtual sonar/GPS units perform just like the real ones!
While the emulators don't actually navigate or show "live" sonar returns (no transducer or antenna connection) all other features are fully functional. Emulators for recording/sonar/GPS units play back recorded sonar logs and display MapCreate™ custom maps.
The GPS Simulator command operates normally in the emulator but, to get the full effect, mapping data is necessary. We have created several MapCreate™ 6 sample maps that you can download to use with mapping capable emulators. Sample Navionics® maps (showing marine chart data) are included in the emulators of products that have memory card reading capability.
Product emulators are useful and fun whether you are a prospective buyer, a new owner or a seasoned pro. These emulators allow you to:
try a product before you buy it
practice operating the unit in the comfort of your home - the next time you're in the field, you'll spend less time learning and more time having fun
experiment with advanced features and settings to get maximum performance from your unit
review sonar logs recorded in your favorite fishing areas - become more familiar with an area's structure and underwater terrain without burning more boat fuel
review boat path and sonar log in split-screen mode, if the GPS module was connected when the sonar log was recorded, seeing on the map where you were when the sonar log was recorded
Since product emulators operate in the same manner as the actual product, we recommend that you refer to the free online owner's manual for detailed instructions on running the emulator, or you can refer to our basic operation guide.
Note: If you have problems with a Product Emulator, please check the Software FAQs for possible solutions.

In the spirit of moving on, here are some notes I copied from a couple of different sources that might be useful to some -- They are based on a Lowrance unit. As has been said numerous times, the best way to learn how to use one of these is to install it in your Daily Driver and "just do it".

cool, pretty nice info, 100% agree with it, you can do almost everything in that document on your pc emulator, to load the usr files in the emulator, u need to copy that file into the root directory of the emulator, c: program files, lowrance, etc etc,. ok, try it there,,,,, ok.
