Hey guys,
Has anyone come across drilling out an aluminum wheel with a steel insert to accept a larger wheel stud? Do you just drill out the steel insert and counter sink the hole to give the new lug nuts a place to sit? I'm sure this is a basic question that most of you racers can answer. :D

Piece O' Cake!
I drill out all of our rims and face mill them to accept the flange nuts that we use.
The American Racing wheels we've been using for the past couple of years don't have steel inserts from factory, so I don't forsee any problem counting on the aluminum as a lug seat. One point of caution however: Be sure to use the correct angle countersink for the lug nuts that you plan on using. (Otherwise bad things can happen)

Yep - with Coleman we used to drill them out and counter-sink... often times right there at tech-inspection when we would receive our free contingency rims in Class 4. We just used hand-held drills.
Good point about the angles, but I don't think we used any rocket-science on that aspect. Aren't some of the big lug-nuts flat-backed?
Anyway, we have not yet made the switch, so my input is several years old, but it was pretty basic and never gave us problems.

Thanks Dave. Good to know.
So Ken, are you rolling with the stock wheel studs on your Bronco? What size tire are you running?
