I have some ideas on this already, but would like to get some ideas from the Pro's, Amateurs, Lurkers, and Know-it-alls! :)

1) Thickness of plate steel...same as frame thickness, or is one size thinner acceptable for boxing in the frame?
2) Take off cross members and motor mount brackets, box in total frame front to back and then weld cross members and motor mount brackets back in?
3) Leave cross members and motor mount brackets in, box in total frame front to back around these and just tie them all in together with the plate?
****I'm thinking #3 would be the easiest and quickest and would be fine....and I will actually be building a new cross member mount for the tranny and t-case, anyway.
4) Length of pieces of plate to weld in? (thinking longest sections possible)
5) Does anyone already have templates made up?

Anything else? Thanks. Jerry

http://www.thewebwheeler.com/forums/images/smilies/6.gif Have you tried seeing if maybe one of those shipping place's might have a big enough Box to place your frame in? http://www.thewebwheeler.com/forums/images/smilies/shrug.gif

Are shipping it somewhere?

I don't think he wants this

I dont know remember what thickness Jeff used for the plating( you can e-mail him, call him or Ill ask when I pick up my bronco tommorow:D ) but I know he use 4130, and he did strips that started from the back and layed over each other as you see below.
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e94/shane_r17/DSC04310-1.jpg

He did about three strips all the way from the back "gas tank crossmember"? to the front engine crossmember. Then the engine crossmember was boxed in as well as shown below.

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e94/shane_r17/DSC04313.jpg

We had the autofab motor mounts installed before the bronco was sent to F3, but didnt make a differance weither or not they are installed before or after.
Jeff also deleted the old crossmember and built a crossmember between the tranny X-member and gas X-member out of 2" .120wall DOM before he plated the frame and then plated it into the new boxed frame w/ some dimples in it(i hope that makes sense?)

Jeff built the tranny X-member so that it uses SOME of the same bolt as the radius arm brackets. He ran some new welds on the old gas and engine x-members and plated the outside of the frame in the front like so.

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e94/shane_r17/DSC04496-1.jpg

And tied the cage and bumps into the new plates. And other points that would act as X-members are the front and rear bumpers and radiator mount. I think it will be plenty strong compared to the factory set up:cool:

Thanks, Broken. All I can think of is that Cam responded to the thread title only without reading the thread. :) ....well, I hope that was the case, anyway.

Shaner,

I'm having my shop box my frame as well. Did you run the frame plates past the stock tank? I notice you still have your stock tank in place.

We didnt run past the stock tank, we figured it would be plenty sturdy up to that point, we did remove the tank so Jeff could weld and around the rear tubes and to replace it or clean it out.

Hey guys,

I talked to my fabricator over the weekend and the rear bump stops are going to be mounted on the inside of the frame on the rear end over the rear axle. He will box the frame around the can, other then boxing the entire frame. I'm wondering how you guys mounting your rear bumps. Pics would be great if you have them. As soon as mine are done, I'm take some pictures as well.

My fabricator boxed the frame then welded some pates to the can off of the boxed frame like so...

I keep wondering why folks have this fascination with boxing the frame on full sized rigs and Jeeps. For the effort and money you put into it, why wouldn't you fab up a whole new frame out of box tubing, or DOM and dimple died plate?

Just a random thought. Whatever you choose to do, double up on the area around the steering box, and sleeve the frame for the bolts so it doesn't rip out.

Some how I don't think it'll be cheaper to build a new frame from scratch compared to creating plates and boxing an existing frame. If it is, give me the name of your builder :)

Not to mention the fact that it wouldn't be class 3 legal anymore.

Do you not do your own fab work?

I don't have a book handy, so how much of the frame has to be in tact to satisfy the rules? Surely there's a loophole somewhere.

I only wish I was that talented Bear. It would get me away from this damn computer and desk, lol. Nope, I'm having Titan Off Road build my truck.

All of the stock frame rails have to be intact. crossmembers can be changed and the bottom of the rails can be cut back 8" in front and tapered to the stock top for ground clearance. You can add all you want and I encourage it to the competition. I'm not sure boxing is necessary but it depends on how you want to build other parts to it I guess.

Is your frame boxed? I think i'm going to forgo it when I get building my project but my baby bronco is a bit smaller/lighter than your guys' too.

No ours isn't boxed but but it has some extra around steering box panhard and motor mount areas. TTB may have its own requirements that I have no experience with though. Somebody is going to have to be the guinea pig I think. Take a peek under some of LeDucs built Broncos and see what he does.
