Have seen many guys with the shifter on the floor but too many guys too with the shifter on dash, well, on a side of the steering wheel, so, based on your experience, what have work better for you, and if you can tell us why,

Mine will be floor mounted but raised up so its with in comfortable reach. :)

go floor but raised. shifting up and down is not natural compared to shifting forward and back. especially if you have a manual automatic.

that was what i was thinking, i agree, no doubt, that's the way it will be done, ON THE FLOOR but rised, :D

I too agree with the floor but raised mentality.

I like it on the floor or raised but not on the dash, it just seems more fluid there. that's my 20 pesos

I'll be running the carbon dash on the second picture and I am thinking of running in that position or possibly a little lower. I'm not crazy about the shifter being up on the dash like in the first picture but it does keep your hands close to the steering wheel. I'll be running an Art Carr gated shifter as well.

Up on the dash and the "UP and DOWN" shifting movement of that is not ergonomically a very good postion for the muscles, tendons, and ligaments that will be used for that motion. Short distances and few shifts won't be a big deal, but I am pretty sure it will get old fast in the longer races and create fatigue in those items mentioned. Pushing and pulling the shifer back and forth with the larger muscles and such of the arm and shoulder wil better on the body. Mine will definately be between the seats, raised up to a very comfortable and "natural" position. If you can't take your hand off the wheel long enough to shift, you should probably be driving a John Deer tractor instead. :) ! Look at all the racers running manual trannies. All in good fun, Chris, but seriously, I think you will be happier in the long run with it at your side, raised up a bit. Jerry

IMO although the floor seems logical, the dash appears to be a better location for racing or hard prerunning. This would seem strange at first but thinking about racing type situations keeping my hands close to the steering wheel might function better. Looking down on the floor, reaching downwards, or taking your hands further away from the wheel to grab the shifter on the floor might decrease your reaction time to grab the wheel... I’ve seen the trophy trucks or high end race trucks with a built in armrest for their right arm with the shifter positioned right at hands reach. So keeping the shifter in the line of sight seems logical to me to be the safest and fastest way of shifting.

ha ha ha nothing wrong with cruising a tractor Jerrry, lol. I hear what you are saying. I'm not at the point of having my interior done so I'm sure I'll be sitting in the truck and try a bunch of different positions for the shifter. I do feel like I'd like to have my hands closer to the wheel but I'll see once I get closer to having my cage and dash built.
By the way, my body is coming off the frame next week. Anything I should look out for before removing the body?

Probably a little closer to me.? ( further back ) because of my Dash layout, & the fact That I'm lazy & dont wanna have to reach for the shifter. http://bestsmileys.com/lol/5.gif

Not really. Just unhook everything. I put mine on a 4x4 rolling welding table and strapped it down with some straps. Nice to be able to move it around by myself. With the bed cut off and the front clip unbolted, 2 of us can lift it, no problem.

here's mine we all sat in the bronco and moving the shifter around, we didnt like it really high because of how much we had to bend our arms to downshift. I guess it's what you feel the most comfortable with...

You need that arm rest thing or something like it to steady your arm. With that dash mounted unit, you would have your arm fully extended while trying to pick a gear, regardless of how close it is to the steering wheel. It's like trying to pick up a pencil while sitting in a paint shaker. If the shifter is close, you can steady your elbow against the seat or your body. You should see the guys try to hit the buttons on the gps with one finger on the end of a fully extended arm.

the jeepspeed i piloted at the 500 had a very interesting arrangement. the shifter itself was mounted on the floor in between the driver and co-dog and was actually set too far back IMO. but on the dash beside the wheel was an electronic shifter lever. so what you would do is put the rig in drive with the shifter beside of you, then up shift and down shift with the electronic shift lever on the dash. it worked out quite nicely until the electronic shifter died! haha. IMO the best place for a ****fer is about a hands distance away from the wheel.

We have ours on a center console -- and this might sound stupid, but there were several times when whoever was driving (either John or I ) would ask the co-dawg to shift -- that way the driver could keep their death grip on the wheel with both hands, and didn't have to worry about shifting. We both got really comfortable with that, so on the dash wouldn't work for us. Unconventional, I know -- but it worked for us as a team.

that doesnt sound stupid at all .. once the JeepSpeed lost the electronic shifter, b/c of the placement of the manual the co-dog was doing the shifting. at the 1,000 2nd gear got all grumbly on our C11 car and again it was easier for the co-dog to get it in [or at least assist] than the driver to fight with it. hey ... gotta' do what you gotta' do right?

No doubt! It started for us when John thought he had broken he arm - we had lost power steering and brakes, and the wheel jerked hard and slammed his arm against the side bar. So he was 1 handing it for the most part -- that's when I started shifting. Worked out great -- up until we broke the racer for good!

Here's how the one in my bronco chase truck is mounted. It's connected to a reverse manual valve body C6.

Hey Chris,
How about posting some pictures of your Broncos. I noticed a few members have asked about your rear bumper set up.
I had a chance to see your dad's white Bronco over at Complete Fabrications. Looks like it's going to be a killer sleeper Bronco.
