Bob Nyeste from the mid 80's, full fiberglass body, almost midengine 460, from Kamloops, BC

Greg Bird from the 90's...he is from Vancouver Island, BC. He sold it to another guy who did all kinds of work to it, then wadded it up bad. It is just sitting in his backyard.

Craig Humphries (Kamloops BC) and his Jeep from the 90's. It actually won the Baja 500 once back in the 70's or early 80's. Canadian Tommy Mower bought it from some americans, then sold it to Bob Nyeste (black bronco above) after he killed the Bronco in a high speed crash. Bob sold it to Craig after he built his Class 4. Craig raced it for a few years, then sold it. It bounced around for a few years and now is street legal play toy, I think.

More BC shots from Mission Raceway in the late 70's, early 80's

Bob Nyeste (black bronco above) built this TLC in the late 70's or early 80's...then sold it to his brother in law Dave Levy (pictured) to build his Bronco.

Outstanding. I love the Neyste 460 black Bronco. Why not have engine setback? Why not make rule changes that make our trucks faster ? Second to the weight position benefit is the fact that better front u-joint angles are available and differencial to oil pan clearances get better. Also, it was nice to see the yellow Blazer carrying the checkered flag.

Dale Nyeste from www.baja-north.com sent me some pictures this weekend. Dale and I grew up together...his dad (Bob Nyeste) and my dad raced together for years. In fact, his shop Sportsman 4x4 was the first 4wd shop I worked at. You have seen his 79 Bronco and TLC in the photos above...

Anyways, Dale scanned some pictures for me last night....

First one is of Bob's Bronco that he raced in the 70's...obstacle, drags, playdays etc...

http://i455.photobucket.com/albums/qq271/oldschooloffroad/Picture062.jpg

Then he built the Land Cruiser...Built for the same purpose, but I think they ran a few short course races in the 80's as well.

http://i455.photobucket.com/albums/qq271/oldschooloffroad/Picture065.jpg

Bob sold the TLC to his brother in law, Dave Levy. Dave raced it for a few years, and I think it ended up as a street and trail vehicle after that. Bob built up the 79 Bronco next. 460 set back a lot, fg body, etc. He ran a few races down south, like the Mint 400. He won the Western Canadian short course series when it was red and white. He also won a lot of races around Bend and Millican, Or. The first desert race I attended was with them and the Bronco in Richland, Wa.

Bob rolled the Bronco really hard one year and it had to be put down. He bought Tommy Mowers CJ and raced that for a few years in the late 80's while he was building his new Class 4 truck. Tommy bought it from someone in the states...a former Baja 500 winner.

Bob sold the CJ to employee Craig Humphries, who now owns www.baja-north.com He put the YJ front clip on it and painted it to match Bob's new F150. You have to love when he went to the pink cage later on...it was great to see in the dust when you were coming up behind him! This would be the early 90's.

Bob's Class 4 F150 was propane powered...He ran it in two Baja 1000's and finished both times.

Here is a photo of Dale's Bronco...he ran it in tough truck races and local short course races and did pretty well with it. He put a 92-96 clip on it after this photo.

Those are some great pictures. As I recall reading somewhere, while refueling the propane powered rigs, they just replace the tanks rather than filling the tanks in the truck. I would guess that was what they were doing on the F150, based on the big handles on the tanks.

Yeah, that is what we did. Slid the tanks in, spring loaded pins to hold it in and quick disconnects on the line. We could actually fuel up just as fast or faster than the fuel guys after we got good at it. The propane worked really well. Slight loss of power, but ended up running dual mixers in the end. Great fuel mileage as well...especially since ICG Propane was a major sponsor. :D

Dale has scanned a few more...

Jack Marno (Vancouver, BC) and his CJ at the Mint. Pretty wild vehicle...full width axles, sbc, and I think tube frame. I know that he had to run Class 1 at the 1000 in the early 90's. It is just sitting up in the interior of BC. I would love to pick it up, throw some coilovers on it and make it into a wicked short course racer.

Dale scanned a few more photos...this is his dad's Bronco from the 70's. Used for obstacle course races and sand drags, etc. Typical playdays of the 70's.
