Yeah I've seen it there many times myself.
Its kinda of a bummer how they just leave it out in the Desert heat all day everyday.

when ever I've seen it, it looks like its been sitting there for months all covered in dust & such.

Kewl shots...do you mind if I use them on my website..credits to you if you want.

The windshield is interesting...the big flat spot before it starts to go back...I guess that way there is more room for the wipers at the bottom...usually they are at the top. I am not sure I am fond of the front and rear windows though...when I had that on the Chevy, the dust always came inside the cab and never left...it always moved around in the cab, never leaving, but with more coming in...took out the windows and it was so much better!

Roach:

That Dennys in Baker is owned by the Pike family, who raced that Bronco from 1973-1988 - the longest racing Early Bronco in history. Gale bought it in 1973 and had Bill Stroppe build/prep it. It originally didn't have the half cab - that was added in the late '70s/early '80s. Gale was born/raised in the Baker/Barstow area and now owns several restaurants down in the LA area closer to the coast. They've had the Bronco on display there in Baker ever since they quit racing it. It has not run in years. We've had it on display at the Bronco 30th Anniversary (1996) and the Bronco 40th Anniversary/Fab Fords (last year) and we've had to winch/push it on the trailer each time. It's a neat piece of history - sorry to see it slowly returning to the elements.

These guys are building a new race car, a Ramcharger, so I doubt the Bronco races again. I wouldn't worry too much about the condition of the Bronco. They know what they have and I'm sure one day it will get some cosmetic attention.

They raced a Ramcharger in the '80s too. Might be a re-do of that truck. I doubt they ever sold the old one. And Gale has a Blazer they race occasionally in BITD too. Plus they still have an Explorer they raced for a few years too.

I agree with you - they know what they have. They've donated one of their Broncos to the Off Road Motorsports Hall of Fame and this one might end up in something like that too someday.

Could be your twin brother seperated at birth....or more likely maybe a cousin. Either way he has relocated and is now in your area (L.A.). You should stop by and see him or at least give him a call and see if he is family. Here is his info. http://activerain.com/7daynotaries

I don't mind at all, Wes! Thanks for sharing. The first two shots above are of a truck now owned by my friend Andrew Norton (how he uncovered that truck is a great story unto itself). He is still peeling back the layers of the onion trying to discover everything about it.

The photo with the Bronco and the Four Wheeler TLC is a shot of the truck in my avatar now owned by myself and Andrew.

The yellow Bronco was (and still is) owned by "Uncle" Bob Lewis of Acton, CA. As an interesting trivia note, he was the first off road racer to ever run KC HiLites on an off road racing machine.

Keep bringing out the old stuff :-).

Sure looks like Glen's Jeep to me. Mike Schwellinger's old CJ has been for sale off/on on Craigslist here in the Phoenix area for the last year. Looks almost like it does in the picture. If I had the $$ and space for an old race truck museum, that would be the one to buy. That truck has a ton of history.

I hear you on Schwellinger's Jeep, Todd. I have seen the ad a few times. If only I had the cash and room, I would have a few trucks as well! Here is a question for you...Was Schwellingers one of Ray Russell's Jeeps? That is one of the rumours I heard and was not sure if it was true. I know that Russell built his and Don Adams Jeeps for a while, right? Was this one of Adams or Russell's old Jeeps?

Dale posted some Mint pictures at http://www.race-dezert.com/forum/showthread.php?t=56357

Just got a chance to look at that thread (can't view the pix at work for some reason). Wow! Some great old pictures in that bunch. I have read/heard that Schwellinger's Jeep was Ray Russell's old CJ-7. There seemed to be some discussion on RDC at some point that pretty much confirmed it and I have no reason to doubt it. I do know the truck was originally a CJ-7 and just had a YJ front clip put on it at one time.

The one in the front is my #40 truck, After the Mint 40 last year a guy said he had a Lucas spot light like the one my race truck has and did i want to buy it, After talking to him the light was on a wrecked 1969 red Chevy truck, After a short talk i had some interest and found out it was the Back up race truck in the photo and it did see race action also in the Mint 400 in 1969 and Baja in 1969-1970 and 1971, I know it is it The SN# is 1 number off my trucks SN#, I paid $125.00 for the light and he threw in the truck, Its in real bad shape but i can bring it back, That is # 4 original Vic Hickey race vechicle i have now, I know where a few more are but i need to come up with $$ , And i need to finish my new Class 3 race Blazer first

And that's our Bronco in the upper left in the car hauler picture. "Colt" is in the upper right.

When we picked up the truck, Timmy was in the middle of an ugly divorce. We couldn't even go near the house... just the garage.

Don't have a clue about TLP or the truck. Not even sure who mike sold it to.

Funny though... Mike's first prerunner just came up for sale. Same guy has owned it for something like 15 years after he sold it.

I was tempted, but pretty "old school" (77 F-150 or something like that).

Whew, that's not much to go by! One sagebrush and one acre of dirt all kind of looks similar. The best way would be if we had an entry list and could track it back by the entry number. Todd and I both have Dusty Times from back then, but we both have them packed away in areas that are way to hot to work in right now. What's the entry name and do you know if they finished or placed? If it was in the last 10 years I would bet against Lucerne Valley because there are not enough tracks and it is not beat up enough.

Personally, I like the look of 309 and the blue 749 Bronco. I have to admit I am surprised that very few of the EB guys wouldn't accept the offer to extend their wheel base by a foot in exchange for coil-overs for everyone. I guess it's one thing to have the FSB's beat them, but another for some other brand. Is there any reason if you wanted to be competitive in a Ford product of why you wouldn't choose a FSB over an EB?

EGud
08-20-2009, 11:19 AM
The guys I know that run the early Broncos do so because they are early Bronco's not because they think they are more competitive. From what I understand the extra 10" made a huge difference in the ride. But, before Ken Rice lengthened it they won class 4 in the 1k then after the lengthen they won class 4 in the 1k.

Two, actually I think 3 time deal. Actually, Todd is right. That Blazer was a once time deal in a Africa rally. I think he also drove a Ramcharger before or after the Blazer. The Blazer below was a one or two time deal for Australia.

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a333/offroadaction/Old%20School-Desert/W85HV_HM001L-640.jpg

This Blazer was originally raced by Bob Gordon (yeah, the kid's dad) and was a sister rig to Frank Vessels, shown below. Vessels sold his to Don Adams (Yup, the Class 3 Jeep guy) and Gordon sold it to Jim Hunter in Australia iin the early 80's. Hunter raced it out there for a few years and then brought it over to race the Baja 1000 in 87 & 88. Anyone know what happened to it after that or what happened to the Vessels/Adams Blazer?

Steve Mizel had some cool stuff, what do you have in your collection?

I thought I had one or two photos of Mizel, but I could not find anything. You are right...he had some pretty neat stuff. IRS in a 80's Bronco in the early to mid 80's...way ahead of its time. I do not remember much else other than that and the big wing...

Who tell me what Bronco is in the picture below? Todd and Gud not allowed.

I'm sure you can find the answer to who owns the Blazers today by surfing around rdc long enough. I believe Don Adams still has his old truck - it was on display at the Baja 2000 party at the Petersen Museum in 2000 and I think Don owned it at that point.

Before Vessels and Gordon owned them, the Blazers belonged Parnelli. Dick Russell built them for him after the Big Oly days.

My friend that works for Parnelli told me they sold the Blazers crazy-cheap when they were done with them - like $2500 ea. or something like that.

I forgot that Parnelli owned them first. Didn't Adams run the Class 2 Blazer and the Class 3 Jeep in the same races?

Oh how painful to see. I live not 200 yards from the Ventura river bottom... well the Santa Clara river-bottom that flows into Ventura/Oxnard. Now it's owned by the Nature Conservancy and you can't even go down there. Awesome 4-wheeling, bike riding, all locked up by tree huggers. What good is land if you can use it? Stand on the bridge and admire it? OK... not hijacking the thread.

Did Vic Hickey live in Ventura??

I knew I had seen some Steve Mizel stuff somewhere....I never saw this in person that I can remember. Didn't it have independent A Arm suspension front and rear? Didn't he also have an early Bronco before this? Or perhaps this is the same one with a newer body?

Speaking of wild rigs, I have been talking to Carl Cooks daughter and should have some photos soon. Carl raced the former Glen Emery rear engine Jeep...

I'm alive and kicking, moved from Moreno Valley to Norco. One of my trucks is at the bottom of a raven not far from Mikes Sky Ranch on the way to the Observatory. The new truck was sold to the Collins then went to a guy in Las Vegas who also bought Wlakers V-10 class 8. It was then sold to a couple of young brothers in Las Vagas minus the Leon Patton motor. Which now is in a 32 Ford Hot Rod. The Truck was raced in some local races around Las Vegas by the guys mother who won a couple races. I built a couple of 76/78 Bronco prerunners that had nice parts on them when I still had the shop Moreno Valley. Last I saw them they were at Leducs shop, then up at Sandy Cones shop up north.I stumbled on to this site and will post some cool pictures from the past. Looking to hear from old racing buddies.

Yes that was the place I called home until the Most expensive thing I had done so far in Life DIVORCE. Divorce is more expensive than racing which I found hard to believe at the time.
I still wonder through old books and magazine reliving the past then jump back to the present. TORQFAB was fun and all the people you end up meeting while building trucks was real fun. I remember a guy came to me with a CJ-7 and wanted a 401 in it. along with all the good suspension stuff. What a project, as I get some time I'll post pictures of Off Road racing history. Jerry Bundy, Curt Leduc, Don Adams and lots more.

Great old pictures. I was searching for current rules in Class 4 for a build I'm working on (what ever happened to class 4?) and found this page.

I remember the Archer Bros. Jeep shown in post #111. I'd check it out every time my dad took me there as a kid to just a couple years back when they closed the shop it sat in the yard. I recognized the double hood latches and Dessert Dogs. Seems to me it had some weird double leaf spring set up too. I wonder what happened to it.

I noticed one of the Jeep pictures had "Aggie's 4x4" on the side. That must have been after Clyde "Aggie" Parsons quit building Class 3 Jeeps. He built and raced many, even receiving a test unit from Jeep after placing well in a Las Vegas race. If my memory serves me correctly, Curt LeDuc drove for him after Clyde retired from driving, amongst others. He was quite innovative for years. I went to school with Clyde, and later mud raced with him in the Northwest. Always a fantastic competitor, and innovator. Many Northwest drivers have said if they had their choice, they wanted Clyde in their pits. He could fix anything. Greg Peters

I assume this is the same "Aggie" that is out to help BFG racers with his remote roving pit support? BFG and lots of people also feel he can fix most anything and give him a lot of respect. Nice to know more of his story if this is indeed the same man.

I called Sandy to let him know that a picture of his Jeep had been posted. If I got it correctly, it is a fiberglass bodied Jeepster, running a 390 and a 4-speed. Sounds like perfect NORRA material to me.
The last batch of pictures has a 1st gen, 2wd ,white Blazer, #210. I ran across it in the neighborhood when I lived for a year my aunt and uncle's house in Pasadena in 1977. At the time, it had Horsepower Engineering on the side and was I think yellow.

Bring 3 to 5 of them to a race, they will make a class. Both Class 3 and 4 rules would fit within the 8 rules. For many years over the last 10 we have had a good enough time to have won class 8 with our 3 at the Baja 1000. Be aware that it doesn't have to be built like a TT to win.

The Waggy would work if it is 108.7". The rule says 108" max but can be + or - 2" from stock. To reduce the wb by .7" would be no big deal.

There's some great rigs in this photo. The red Bronco is Rick Fliam's Mobile Wash of Denver special -- lots of photos of it on the 'net. On the right is Jerry Daugherty's original "Black Widow" Chevy Blazer. Just behind Fliam is a Cj2-bodied Bronco that raced in Colorado for years and was driven by Jerry Colton in a Baja 1000. The green Scout is indeed Sherman Balch's (he won). The yellow Scout Terra is Frank Howarth's. Way toward the back is Jerry Colton's blue Colorado Springs Equipment Co. Scout. Also in this race, but not visible, were Scout racer Jimmy Jones and Jeep racer Don Adams.
