Congrats to Mosses - I would've expected no less!!
Did Dan Wright finish?
Todd Z.
No, actually He had a Tranny lines issue, that caused a Fire when the Trans fluid lit up.
He was going to get in on the 2nd Lap But never got a chance to get in after the fire that the racers in at the time did put out before it got ugly.
& Tazz told me that he saw this whole Primm run as a shake down for Baja & was sadified with the results of learning what needs & dont need work before Baja.
Cam, thanks for posting. It has been nerve racking sitting here at home doing chores and waiting for results.

SCORE TROPHY TRUCK
38 Garron Cadiente (first place in class) – drove solo
“Man, what a race. It was crazy out there. We just didn’t let up the whole time. Thank BF Goodrich for what they do for us. We didn’t have a crowd out there all day, there was no one following us. Everybody gave a lot – you guys did a lot for us with the press this weekend. Cheeseburger, where ever you’re at, I love you buddy. But I’ve got to tell you that guy was on us all day. You couldn’t relax. There’s so many guys that so fast, so many good trucks. It was just a great day for us…Definitely, you have to just keep tabs on everybody behind you but sometimes that tough. We were right in the middle. Everybody was going fast today and I think we just did it a little bit better than everybody else. We’re real excited about this and this was a race we really wanted to win.”
On passing Wyllie:
“Todd (Wyllie) was ahead of us for awhile and we took him over at about Race Mile 55. He ran really good all day. Never saw him until the last lap when we finally started seeing his dust. The course was extremely rough but we ran really hard though.”
(4 hours, 56 minutes, 34 seconds – 3 minutes plus ahead of Mark Post./Rob MacCachren)
On waiting for the race results:
“It’s always scary at the end when you have these guys coming in like this. BJ, and Mark and Rob, been tough all year. They’re just there every race and it’s so tough and it’s a little nervous at the end. I was really confident that we had them. Our split times were good all day. We did have a couple of mechanical issues where we did have to stop a couple of laps. But the guys did a great job today. We kicked *&^% today!”
On the year following his rookie of the year award: “It’s a little bit rougher year than I expected but it’s alright. This was the race where we wanted to regroup and do really well in the points and go in with a full head of steam into the 1000. We are right there in the points. With these guys finishing two and three, it’s going to be really tough to run up on them. So it’s going to take a big win like the 1000 to really pull one out for us. Right there, just to be in the mix with these guys – it’s a super tough series this year. It’s getting tougher every year and these guys are just tremendous drivers. All the equipment is getting better. It’s just a fabulous time and I just want to enjoy the most out of it.”
3 Mark Post (second place in class)
Quote by Rob MacCachren
(Post drove the first 112 miles and MacCachren finished)
(drove in on a flat tire) – “We’re in a real stiff points battle with BJ (Baldwin) and he was three points up on us coming into this event. We have one more event after this one, the SCORE Baja 1000, and we wanted to try to make some of those points up. BJ got a four minute lead on us and on the last lap I just went for broke and tried to catch him. About mile marker 55 or so we were door to door and I couldn’t make the pass stick. He got back in front of me and I was just going crazy through the dust and ended up getting a front flat tire. About a mile after I had my flat front tire, I hadn’t stopped yet, BJ was pulled over changing his so we took a gamble and tried to drive it in here so we could make sure we stayed in front of him and the gamble paid off.”
1 B.J. Baldwin (third place in class) – drove solo
“Well we drew dead last (in position) and we tried to pick them off one by one for the first lap and not take any risks and then go racing for the second lap. We passed a lot of cars. Oh man, me and Rob had great fight and the last 30 miles was awesome. Mark (Post) and I ran real close in Las Vegas . I tried to catch (Todd) Wyllie and (Garron) Cadiente but I really needed to finish in front of Mark (Post) for the points. I have not idea so I just need to stand here and wait (for the results).”
“I had a great day today. We drew last place with a couple cars starting behind us. First lap we just took it easy so see who was going to have issue and who wasn’t. From the second lap on it I just tried to pick people off. The best part of my whole day was going to war with Rob this last 30 miles. It was crazy. Robb (MacCrachren) was trying to get me. He gained some time on me when I got stuck behind a couple of cars and I got a flat. He went by and then he got a flat. He drove in on a flat and I tried to beat him here. I’m not quite sure I made it.”
85 Todd Wyllie (fourth place in class) – drove solo
“I had the lead they were telling me by several minutes for the first two laps and then all of a sudden Garron (Cadiente) came out of nowhere and caught up to me and then he had me by a couple of minutes so I tried pushing it and had an additional flat. Then he got by me so that allowed him to come on in first at that point. He (Garron) had me on time, somewhere through the third lap he caught up to me on time I don’t really know where. It was kind of incredible how fast he caught up with me.”
19 Ed Herbst (fifth place in class) – drove second 2 laps
“We had problems and it cost us some down time. Our CV’s were binding up and it affected our 4-wheel drive. It just got a lot of silt in there and I think they are just binding up with the silt, so we had to grease them up a bunch of times but other than that we had a pretty good day, just not enough.
CLASS 1
100 - Larry Roeseler (first place in class) – drove first 2 laps
Quotes by Troy Herbst, co-driver – drove second 2 laps
“I drove Class I last year. This year I’m back in the Trophy Truck. It was my brother who had an injury last year. We had problems and it cost us some down time. Our CV’s were binding up and it affected our 4-wheel drive just got a lot of silt in there and I think they are just binding up with the silt, so we had to grease them up a bunch of times but other than that we had a pretty good day. It was just not enough.
“It was a great race, a little dusty, a little rocky. It was a good time out here, everyone had friends and everyone was having a good time. I’m pretty happy with the results. Everything went really good today. I started out with Larry this morning and then later hopped in the driver’s seat. It was really fun today. I had a blast. Larry did the first two (laps) and I did the second two (laps).”
134 - Harley Letner (second place in class) – drove first 2 laps
“We had problems with the motor at the first 20 mile marker. We lost a hood and heating problems.
Mike Ballard – (Drove the final laps)
“Our first problem was when we hit the first bed of silt and it just died on us so we shut it down and got out, checked it all out, reset the computer and got it fired back up and it started running by then. We ran it for about 20 miles and saw it was running very hot at about 250 on the temperature. So we slowed down and cooled it down and it ran down at 220 after that.”
102 - Eric Chase (third place in class) – father drove 1st two laps
Eric drove final 2 laps
“My Dad did the first two (laps). We had a really good run. He hurt his arm a couple of weeks ago testing and we weren’t sure if he was going to be able to do one or two or any laps. He was able to do two. We had clean laps, no flats at all. Me and my friend, Chris Wilson, got in at the beginning of the third lap. Had a really good third lap, passed a couple of Class 1 cars, a couple of trophy trucks. Herbst got around us on the fourth (lap). We ran a little bit more of a conservative fourth lap. We’re fifth in points and we’re trying save it for the end. We saw a couple of cars that were ahead of us in points and we just wanted to get here to the finish.”
108 - Armin Schwarz (fourth place in class)
(Schwarz drove two laps and Matthias Kahle drove two laps)
“It was a year ago that Martin introduced me to racing so, for me, it was a good experience to come back here and race again. We had a perfectly prepared car. So, we had nothing to worry about. We just took a chance to go really fast from the beginning.”
103 - Randy Wilson (fifth place in class)
(Ronny started and Randy took over)
“We had a couple of flat tires and we hit a lot of rocks.”
CLASS 1-2/1600
1618 - Cory Boyer (first place in class)
“This feels awesome. It’s my first win ever in the desert. I got my first win in Choke Horse earlier this year in April and it’s awesome. I’ve been waiting for this since I was 18 and I’m 22 now.”
1611 - Aaron Hawley (second place in class)
(On being the first one in.) “Yes, I’m the first one in for this class but there is another guy coming so it’s going to be close on times.”
CLASS 3
300 - Donald Moss (first place in class)
“The course was unbelievably dusty. We had everybody together for awhile and everybody stuck with us, but we hung in there and they were quite a ways back from what we could tell. We had a pretty good run. It would have been good to have a little bit of wind but there wasn’t anything early on. I didn’t see most of the first lap. It was all covered with dust. I want to thank the sponsors West Coast Popular, B.F. Goodrich - everything held up perfectly. I can’t say enough about my crew for all the work they did. They tore the front end up and completely rebuilt it over the past two week so we are pretty happy with this finish.”
305 - Kirk Kovel (second place in class)
“It was pretty bad right off the bat. At about Mile 4, a Class 7 truck got stuck in the silt; about three cars got piled up there and they wanted a push. So, I backed up and rammed them and got them going but then I got stuck. So, I had to get out, get myself unstuck and took back off and then all the dust was gone. At about Mile 4, I went straight for about two miles then tried to turn around and get back on the course and got going again. Other than that I had carburetor problems most of the day and then I had a flat on the last lap and then (car) 301 passed me.”[/size]
CLASS 5
518 - Kevin Carr (first place in class)
“It was a good course, good race. Thanks a lot to everybody who helped support us – especially my Dad. He couldn’t make it up here but he’s been looking up the IRC and he’s been watching us all day. It’s been a (few years) coming and it feels pretty good. Michelle was right behind us and she was giving us a good race. The car ran beautifully-- no problems with mechanical. No flats. Great day! Everything went smooth. You know we didn’t want to go slow or fast we just took our pace and so we handled it.”
500 - George Seeley (second place in class)
“I think the course was great. Sal set it up a lot better. It was really neat. They just gave us a fresh motor for this and we put on new B.F. Goodrich tires. Our training was fixed up by Fortner. We really abused the (bleeping) arms on this thing today. We just put new (King) shocks in the front – our coil springs – so it really handled a lot better in the dips today and we were able to run the pace and the last lap we knew where we were so we just kept on going just to get second. We really appreciate you guys being out here.
501 - Michelle Bruckmann (third place in class)
“The race was so much fun. I thought it was a fast track and going to be a semi-easy race but I had it so wrong. Half the race (the car) was broken out in the middle of nowhere. We broke twice the shock bolt --the shock mount-- so we had to fix it twice. We welded it, so we lost a lot of time.”
CLASS 5/1600
553 - Rulo Solano (first place in class)
Rulo Solano’s daughter – “It was an awesome race and a great course. Everyone out there was terrific – a great race. We had no problems whatsoever.”
556 - Mario Reynoso (second place in class)
Francisco Reynoso (brother and co-driver) – “We lost power steering and had no brakes. Mario drove 1½ laps.”
CLASS 7
700 - Dan Chamlee (third place in class)
“I was never in the lead. I was nursing no gas n the shocks for two laps. I don’t know why, but for some reason we didn’t have gas in the shocks for two laps. We couldn’t really get into the throttle all night long.
We got along for third place.
CLASS 7SX
758 Rich Severson – (first place in class)
(On the close finish). “If we are within a minute, we got him. He started a minute ahead of us today. No problems, just a rough course. No flats. We paced ourselves. In the third lap we had to leave for a while and Jim caught us and we just chased him down to the finish and I think we got him.
745 - Jim Hinesley (driver of record) (second place in class)
Co-driver Igor Galvan –
“I think Rich got us by time. I think we got second place. We just got a couple of flats on the way, had a little fire, we had all kinds of things going on.”
CLASS 8
802 - Glenn Greer (first place in class) – drove solo
“We had a scepter shaft break on our steering box in that real rough stuff back there. Toyo’s tires did great. We had traction all day. (Nick Vanderwey) is very good down there at Baja. We haven’t beaten him down there, but I’ll try.”
CLASS 9
949 – Rob MacDonald (first place in class)
“In the first lap with Wagner we broke a fuel pump and the shifter popped out so we could only keep it in second gear. We had some pretty long down time, but actually I had no trouble when I got in after he fixed it. I had no trouble at all, just a great run. We debut the brand new car.”
CLASS 10
1006 - Chris Harrold (first place in class)
“I got a flat on the 1st lap and I lost my GPS so I had to be really careful with the speeds because I didn’t have the GPS read out. Then I lost my water bottle and had a lap and a half to go and I was getting awful thirsty without any water. And then we got a flat at the end somewhere. I was pushing really hard and I rode it in on a flat in the end. There was a stock truck dogging me and I had to eat his dust all the way to the finish so that slowed me down a bit on this last part. In spite of all that I might have pulled it off. I think I had to beat these guys by about five minutes to win.”
1004 - Robert McBeath (second place in class)
“It went pretty good. We lost power steering on the third lap. We got that fixed and after that it was home free. Otherwise, it went very smooth the rest of the day.”
1016 - Larry Job (third place in class)
“The race was great at the beginning, everything was flawless and then we broke a front ring and pinion and lost the 4-wheel drive at about Mile 26. It took about 20 minutes to triage the front-end to 2-wheel drive so it would still roll.”
1001 - Adam Wik (fourth place in class)
“We were down for about 25 or 30 minutes at least. It was a really bad tire change you could say since it fell off the jack and they had to dig it out. It happened about Mile Marker 56, which is up in the big rocks and tough because it’s not flat around there. But overall we’ve been doing just an outstanding job all year.”
SCORE LITES
1209 - Jason Batulis (first place in class)
1249 - Ty Godde (second place in class)
“I don’t know how close we were but we are within four or five minutes. We stopped for fuel in the first lap so we could lighten the car so we could make up time and lost about a half a minute there.”
STOCK FULL
861 – John Griffin (first place in class)
“We didn’t stop. The car ran perfect. It was pretty rough – this sucks it up pretty good. The second lap was a little more rough than the first. The bumps got a little more square. We had a pretty uneventful race. We only stuffed one hole. The course was a little rough but not as bad as last year. No flats.”
863 - Chad Hall (second place in class)
“I got one! We had no trouble at all. The course was really rough and we just kind of motored around. We had absolutely no problems whatsoever and ended up having a good day. I’ve never raced this course before. Obviously, I’ve run part of it many times, but not actual Primm. No, I wasn’t surprised with my first time. We weren’t going to go fast. We were going to just drive around. I mean we would drive as fast as this thing would go and (Gavin) went real fast the first lap and we just worked on it and kept going.”
860 - Terry Henn (third place in class)
‘It was a fun day. We just had a little mishap at the beginning. We got kind of sidetracked with the dust and made a little detour which took us completely out of the way and we had a little trouble getting back because they wanted us back on the track where we detoured.”
STOCK MINI
779 - Gavin Skilton (first place in class)
“This was the roughest course ever! I can’t wait to get to (The SCORE Baja 1000). I had some mechanical problems. I had a trailing arm break on the first lap. I was in the lead with a good lead then I just got stuck with people blocking the washes then not marking blind corners and coming around corners. I had to take getting stuck over hitting them. It’s very dangerous when people don’t mark themselves around a blind corner when they’re stopped in the course. The next race, the SCORE Baja 1000 is where I like to race. Nevada is very tough to race in the stock production cars.”
761 - Steve Kovach (second place in class)
“It was real dusty in the morning. We started off in the sun and it made it pretty exciting and the course has changed each lap dramatically.
What’s next for us? The 1000 – we’re geared up for it. We finished second today. (Rod Hall) passed me and I could never get back with him.”
PROTRUCK
235 - Jason Voss (first place in class) – drove solo
“The track was good. Our truck worked awesome the whole time until six miles out when we lost the distributor gear. It cost us about 40 minutes.”

Well... you could read that post as: "hope to hear more about what happened to you three"... ha ha. Anyway, you get my update whether you like it or not! :o)
Special thanks to Cam for the pre-run. We had a great time and seeing the course was nice, as there were some changes this year... maybe 10% or so, but still worthy of seeing it.
We actually had a good race, and a lot of what we expected played out. I took it easy, and although I expected to pass Dylan earlier, the dust was AMAZING! (in a bad way). We literally were relegated to going 1 mile an hour, and even stopped at times (which is scary)... just waiting to see something. The first 15 miles were brutal. Moss got around me in the two/three-lane big whoops, which was OK with me. I was running mellow (according to our plan).
We caught Dylan at the start of the really rough rocks, and were planning our pass move. He took a wide outside right-hand turn, and I tried to cut short right - no bueno - way too much dust. We had to stop. When the dust cleared, 349 was making his way around both of us!! I was like - DANG (except I used another word). Great pass on his part. Anyway, we could smell that Dylan was running hot, or had some oil dripping on something - so we weren't too concerned. He pulled off at Pit B and we eased on by, begging our guys to throw damp rags in the truck as we blew thru, so we could wipe our glasses, shields, faces, etc.
At that point, we were physically a minute or 1.5 down from Moss, which again was ok with me. LONG ways to go.
We finally got to start "racing"... I'd like to see the top speed from Rally Tracker on the paved road; for that matter, check point times. We pulled an amazing pass on Rod Hall... I felt bad, but he was coming left to right and was about to pinch us up against that fence in the rocks (you racers know where I'm speaking of). I don't think he even knew we were there. I just floored it - to SQUEAK by before it was either him or the fence. Anyway, I can't IMAGINE how much silt he must have eaten after that pass. It was close.
At this point, Tom Blair (co-driver) is suffering from something in his left eye - that he may have picked up in the mud in the in-field. Guess his shield was up (mine usually is). By this time, mile 35 or so, he can't even keep his eyes open - just for brief periods to check the gauges. OUCH. He radios my dad to prepare for a co-driver change at main pit... he wants OUT!
Anyway, all is going well until about mile 45 when "bang, bang, bang"... A rear shock mount busted loose (first time ever). Anyway, two wrenches and a few minutes, the shock is off, and here comes Kovel. He slowed, we waived him on by, and away we went. The truck works "ok" on a single rear shock, just a little squirrely.
Kovell pulled over with a small puff of black smoke (those carb problems I heard him mention). We stopped - he waived us by... so off we went!
Now we had a tough decision. Try to fix the shock or keep moving. I chose to have the shock tabs welded back on, which turned out to be a bad idea. Either the crappy welder or the crappy gen, but something wasn't working well. Then, the guys had a really hard timing bolting the bottom shock mount back on. What seemed like an eternity went by. Dylan went around, Kovell got going again, and my 5-10 minute fix must have taken over 30 minutes. SO GET THIS - first bump in the in-field - the shock tab breaks off again! Can you say "no penetration???
My dad (who had jumped in), now jerks the shock off (again), and away we go - running surprisingly good, but not wanting to bottom out the rear-end. By the way, the motor is AWESOME! I was SO worried we might have hurt it in the crash/overheating from Baja - Phew! Anyway, all is going well - we pass 349 who smelled of anti-freeze and was pulled over. Now we are thinking we have a shot at 2nd, but have to reel-in Dylan and Kovell. We were really cooking, when (ZZIIIINGGGGG). The transfer case goes from 4 high to neutral. YES - neutral. Never done that before. So to shorten the story, first we lose 4 high, then we lose 2 high... and actually tried to finish in 4 low. I think we had time, but the transfer case wouldn't hold. Eventually lost 4 low and became specators.
thanks to my father, mother, and the whole Idaho crew!!! Thanks Dale, Tom, Teri, Mark, Justin, Rocky, Craig, Kevin, Terry (Dale's wife), and I'm sure I'm going to offend someone!!
Special thanks to Christina (dirtygirl) for coming all the way to Cal, so I could pre-run and attend the tech/contingency. She took awesome care of my daughter, and they had a great time during the race. To see your fans in the bleachers, waving signs as you go by, is quite a thrill - especially when one is your daughter!!
We will back, someday, but the 1000 is out.
Hope that didn't bore anyone!!

Hey Ken,
Great write up. I have to tell you, years ago when you used to run the Bronco with the hard top and before your wheel wells were opened up, I remember find pictures online of you racing, what an inspiration. I've been a fan ever since. Glad to see you got out to Primm. Actually I still have photos of your truck that I should dig out.
Damn I sound like a stalker fan, lol.

Thanks for the encouragement. Cam and I talked a lot about my little team. I stick to so many OEM parts, it's scary. We pay the price from time-to-time, but NOBODY has more fun that we do. That is what it's all about.
If it aint broke, we don't necessarily fix it. This race... the OEM transfer case got us, but the after-market shock mounts went first!! Love those fab guys!!!

Awsome Story Ken! I will try to get Dylan to post his story but here is what happened from Donahoe Chase 1. : the morning started out all good we had finally had some sleep. We had last minute fab work to do on the motor mounts and lower a-arm pivot points of the Fj so we were burning the Midnight oil. So anyhoo the race starts and Dylan comes over the radio saying everything is good and we are in Cruiser mode. Then like many things in off-road racing a Big rut jumped out in front of Dylan and he broke the front ring and pinion. This was Mile 22 So at pit B we bring him in and do some key stone cops troubleshooting that took about 10 minutes before we decided to take the front driveline off and let the front gears go for a ride the rest of the way. Our FJ is all time 4wd so when you blow the front ring and pinion you can lock up the front end if it won’t freewheel. So anyways Dylan now is in survival mode. Our goal at this race was purely to Finish so now that was looking doubtful at mile 22. He was off and running and not doing to bad considering he was waiting for the front end to lock up and do a front gainer. Then we had a Flat. Now this got kind of funny because yours truly made the call to leave all the spares with the Nitto trailer at pit C. Well the FJ blew by pit C before the flat so us chase guys had to drive the long 25mph road to pit C., Get a Tire and try to make it back to B before the FJ got there on its last lap. Well that didn’t happen. So Dylan kept forging ahead and met us at C and we gave him his spare. It was at the pit c on the last lap that we spent the most time working on the FJ. the rear output shaft on the FJ was supper loose so we fixed that and double checked the whole truck making sure it could run the last 30 miles and hit our goal of a finish. We worked on the truck for a good 30 mins. And Dylan cruised on in for the 3rd place finish. All I can say is The Moss brother Are Fricken studs… The consistency Brothers. That old bronco is like the energizer Bunny…Anyways I just wanted to tell everyone what a Great time we are having running in Class 3 this year. What a super group of guys. If I have done my math right MOSS, EVANS, and RAFFO all have a shot at the Class 3 SCORE Championship. If all of us finish the 1000 we win no matter what place any of us get. Whoever doesn’t finish is out unless no one finishes. Baja will tell the tale. And if history repeats itself---Moss will be Champs again. But then again I have always been a futurist.

Raffos has not returned my phone call, But the story I heard was that about 2.5 miles into the course there was a Buggy pile up & Raffo tried to go around it & ended up on his side.

:rolleyes:I sometimes wonder if they get bored always winning?
Now THAT's funny! I'm sure it never gets old. Wish I knew though.
Moss Bros rock on. Well done.
Our story, I'm not sure how many out there do a 100% in house build up of their racer but if you do, you know the time it takes. We started with a frame and it has been 7 months of nights and weekend getting to this point and we made it. The only custom pieces that weren't done by the team were the front end and even after chosing to out source it, I had to cut the wedges off and reset them because as shipped they were out of alignment and the radius arms by Chuck at BC Broncos and I modified those too. Design and fab, also the motor, trans, transfer case were all assembled or rebuilt by our team. So it has been a haul. For those that know, I'm heading down to spend another $60 on a new shop. :D
It had exactly 2 miles on it when it came off the trailer. As I said in the other post if you see a group of guys painting a bronco in the pits on Thursday you will have found my crew. :) we really needed another week. The goal was always to get it to Primm to do a shake down race prior to some final tweaking before Baja.
I had decided that we would start the race with Daniel driving and Marty as Co-driver for the first lap with Jeremy and me taking the second lap. With Daniel and Marty in the racer they headed for the staging area. We received the call that they were away and to our delight the racer survived Daniel trying to catch everyone in the infield. He proved that it flies well and the front skid plate is at the right angle to bring it back down on it's wheels if you stand it on it's nose. It's what happens when you put a kid that has been running tough trucks for almost 10 yrs in an infield stadium. He won the bet though, the whole crew laid money down that he wouldn't make it out of the infield. :)
Our race was not to be that long, but very eventful in what time we were on the course. Daniel evaded the pile up, at race mile 2.5 that took Raffo out of the race. He said he saw Raffo go high on the train track side and wind up on his side and Kirk go the other way so he took the line between Raffo and rig side ways in the course. He made it through. We were in contact with him the whole time and the racer was handling the course well when I heard fire come over the radio. Daniel and Marty got the racer shut down and the fire out. They surveyed the damage, a tansmittion line had come loose and fell down on the exhaust and burnt through causing the fire. The guys after figuring things out got a field fix in place and started limping it to pit B.
We had not stationed any one there so Mike and his crew headed from pit C back to Pit B. figuring if they could get it there we could get a permanent fix in place and keep going. The racer had been running a bit lean ( we really did need another week) and was running a touch warm but not bad, but with the added stress of running low on trans fluid and limping it in it was heating up pretty good. He stopped twice to let it cool down, with this being a shake down run for us and everything on the suspension working well Daniel made the choice to call it. We radioed Score that our day was over and they eventually came and towed him out to Pit C. I’m glad it didn’t take long for us to get to Pit C to get him, if it had, I think he would have given the entire racer away to help those broke down in pit C. As it was he had offer up an electric radiator fan, a 9” third member and a trans cooler before we got there and was about to start wrenching on another ones rig when we showed up. Ah but that’s who we are, so it's all good. ;)
It was great to meet those on here that we haven’t met in our 5 trips to Baja 1000, it was our first race ever in Score other than Baja and we had a great time. Other than the fire it went just about like I had expected, some small thing I had over looked would take us out. But that's why you take it to shake it out.
For those that I didn’t get to meet, I hope I have the opportunity down the road to meet you. Remember, if we’re broke and out of it, or you see an Old Horse Racing Pit and you need something stop we’ll do anything we can to keep you going. We can always square up down the road. :)

Thanks Todd,
I'm sure there were more than just a few doubter, when we lost a transfer case and it wouldn't run worth a damn when we were there. That added to the things we already new we were going to have to do prior to Primm. When we left SOB we had 9 days to get it all done and be to Primm by Thursday the 6th.
I average the effort out and it worked out that it was either being worked on or on the trailer being towed for an average of 21 hrs a day for those 9 days. A couple of times I think both things were takeing place at the same time. It made stops in 4 states and traveled 2350 miles from when we left that event to when we arrived at the race for the cage inspection.

So, what happened to Raffo???
The reason I've gone awol, is that I'm currently towing the Blazer back to Chicago, with the final stop in Green Bay, WI. I'm in Denver as I write this note. I didn't plan on towing 2000 plus miles home, but the original plan fell through. One of my guy's dad was going to drive his semi based motor home out to the race and take my Blazer and Suburban back with him. At the last minute his wife had to go in for some oral surgery and he cancelled his drive. In an effort to make sure we have the best prep possible for the 1000, we decided to take the truck back where we could work on it.
The race was a major bummer. I was really excited to race a full field, but alas, I had problems right from the start. By the second turn I could tell my traction on the heavily watered course was off. We finished the infield, did the 25mph transition drive and started on the main course. We didn't go more than a few hundred yards before we hit the first silt bed. Low and behold, Andy Levitt had buried himself in his 2wd Ford. I saw that he was stuck so I bailed to the side. My traction died totally, leaving me stuck at the edge of the railroad tracks. When I figured it was the transfer case, we went over to Andy and helped dig him out and get underway. He finished.
Back to the Blazer, in additon to loosing the transfer case, we blew the outer u-joint on the front left wheel. Totally unrelated. So we pulled the drive gears out the front hubs and pulled the front drive shaft. We tried to lock the transfer case(full time 4wd), but found that a shift fork was broken. We jammed a short 3/8's extention to lock the case in 4wd and took off. We got another half mile and then it went dead. We sat with the car for the next four hours roasting, but enjoyed our high priced seats.
After getting the truck off the course, my co-driver, Jeff Dolan treated us to a royal bbq of lobster and filet. Curt LeDuc spent the afternoon eating with us and sharing some of his war stories. He's a very nice guy. He also knows quite a bit about our class and was willing to endure my endless questions.

Moss Bros Race Update, Primm 300
As you know, the truck was hurt pretty bad two weeks prior to the Primm race during the Vegas to Reno race. It required a completely new front axle housing, along with repairs to the rear axle that was leaking heavily. We pulled another housing from another parts truck that we had acquired, stripped it down, and had crew chief Dave Grundman weld up a new truss. This time we added a strap across the top, since our previous truss did not add any strength to the axle from a strike to the bottom. We are still tied to that weak Dana 44 casting that sits right in the worst possible place for strength. When the welding was done, the housing went to River City Differentials, and they had the new gears put in less than 24 hours later. The rear axle only required disassembly and new sealant, and was otherwise OK.
We had to try and make the same cage inspection prior to Primm that Dan (Tazz) spoke of. Luckily he was able to catch Bill Savage on the phone, and found out the inspections would not be on Thursday, but Friday instead. We got to drive down to the race during the day for a change. That meant that we had to get the truck inspected, then get out to pre-run the course, and make it to early registration, all in the same 2 hour time block. It all turned out OK, and with an early inspection and sending someone else to registration, we made it all happen.
We had no issues at all on the pre-run, and in fact adjusted the rear shocks afterwards.
Race day went well, and we encountered the truck stuck around mile 2 or 2.5 that Chris spoke of. I did not think it was Andy Leavitt, because they should have started after us. In fact, we almost ran right into the back of the stuck truck, and was afraid someone behind would. We were able to back up and go around. I hope that Kirk Kovel tells how he pushed the truck out with his own story.
The dust was just terrible for the next 20 miles. We could see Ken ahead, and finally passed him about mile 10. We then caught Rod Hall and eventually got around him around mile 16. We then began to see Evans, but could not gain on him. He pulled out at pit B to work on the truck, we went by, and then things started to clear some. We caught the Honda Ridgeline before pit C (remind me again why this class starts in front of us?) and went around him.
Around mile 55 or so, a red 7SX truck caught us that must have broken down early. He never even slowed down, used the horn or anything, and ran straight into the back of our truck. So we showed him who weighed more and had better brakes, before letting him by. I had my hand up, indicating I was looking for a place to pull over, but apparently this looks like to everyone that I am giving them the finger. This was an established team that should have known better, maybe they had a green driver, not really sure. In any case, they were pulled over with a flat tire 5 miles later, and although they finished, they never passed us again.
We made our one stop for fuel and rider change at the main pit, and we were off. Ken had to stay behind and work this time, so I soloed the driving. We were surprised to be passed by the lead Class 10 only a few miles later. These guys were on it. In years past, they didn’t catch us until the back side of the course. I think we passed two 5-1600 cars, and that was about it. The course was much rougher on that second lap.
A huge thanks to all that helped to get the truck up and running again. Cliff, Gary, Michelle, and Ken for getting the axle out of the spare truck, and Ken and Dave for getting the new one installed in the truck and helping with the rest of the prep. Also thanks to all that came out to support us at the race: The Reilly family, the Keys family, the Peck family, Rob, Robert, Susie, Cliff, Dan, Brad, Jack and Jerry.
So we re-group now for the 1000, and try to figure out how to come up with that entry fee!

Hard to believe I just got home(Chicago) on Thurs night. After the race at Primm, I had to fly down to Orange County for a meeting on Monday morning. I flew back to Las Vegas on Tues. picked up another u-haul trailer and headed East. I stopped in Denver for a day with one of my crew. I left Boulder at sunrise on Thurs. By Thurs. night I was in the middle of Missouri when the trans housing busted open. It took me another six days to get a trans back in the truck. Good news, bad news. The bad, I'm out of cash, I have barely enough to get home. The good, I have a friend in the town that I busted the trans, and had a place to stay while trans was fixed. The bad, she's a divorced ex-girlfriend. Happy wife... third trans in three years... spend all the money to go racing, stay at old girlfirend's house.
Yes, we will be at the 1000.

Not to quick there Cam, I'm on my 5th Transmission getting my 2001 F350 to 120,000 miles.
Though it could be me too. Maybe they're not made to tow a trailer all the way into Mike's sky ranch and back with a bronco on the trailer. Or live almost every mile they've gone grossing 24K. ;)
It only didn't limp it way home once though. :)

I take it you're still running a 78/79 F150/Bronco front axle with the POS cast C-bushing mounts?
You might look into getting a Dana 44 housing from an earlier vintage F-truck. ~75-77 used the high-pinion front but ran steel tubes with weld-on mounts. The F250 78/79 leaf-sprung front end might also be more desirable.
Should be a simple thing to weld on some radius arm mounts instead of the leaf springs mounts while the truss is being built, and I believe they start out significantly stronger than the 78/79 Bronco housings.

From the pictures that Dave supplied, you can see that it broke at the differential housing itself. That is where we have had all the problems, where the tubes go into the housing. Unless we ran the tube all the way through the housing......... We have never had a problem yet with the cast C-bushing mounts. Since Ford or Dana welded directly to the housings, I was under the impression that they were cast steel, not iron.
