Hi all,I was wondering what if anything do you racers do about registering your race rig with the D.M.V.? Do you ever have any issues crossing into Mexico or crossing back into the U.S.?

I will be registering mine with the CA DMV as an "Off Road" vehicle. This way I can legally take it to certain areas for testing. (Off road parks, BLM land...whatever). If your rig is '75 or older, you could just street license it and have much more flexibility with where you drive it. (CA law) Anything newer than '75 and you would have to pass all smog laws, inspection, and testing. Not gonna happen with mine....or any "real" race truck.
It is no issue going into MX. If they want to take your ****, they will. Doesn't matter how it is registered or if the Pope owns it for that matter!

Is that why I noticed a local Ensenada cop cruising around in a GSXR street bike painted in black and white?
I've heard horror stories but the countless times I've been down there and have been pulled over, I've always gotten away with a $20.00 kick back.... I mean fine. Knock on wood.

Thanks for the replies guys. Yes unfortunately I've had to pay a "fine" a few times myself.

Believe it or not, my piece of crap Jeep liberty lost a ball-joint when we went down for the Baja 250 in Ensenada. This meant we had to put IT on the race trailer, and I took my chances towing the race truck, due to the massive damage from the wreck we had been in. Sure enough, a motorcycle cop wanted to throw the book at us... "follow us to jail, etc etc etc". They have gotten even more greedy than before - the days of the 20 dollar fines, etc, are apparently over. Anyway, I could drive the race truck a short distance, so we took our chances and drove towards the border. When it heated up, we had to put it on a strap again, and were pulled over AGAIN. Odly enough, this cop took zero money but was very agitated with me. I was asked repeatedly for my "registration", which of course the race truck does not have.
So - to answer the question, I'm in a pretty fortunate situation, because the truck WAS registered in Idaho previously, and we have no smog rules in such a rural area. I am going to re-register the truck so I can carry the paper work with me in the future. I think it was like a whopping 29 bucks last time. Gotta love Idaho!!
I think the "off-road" registration idea listed above is a good one, but only if you can't get a normal registration somewhere. We always end up driving on the pavement, and if we pre-fun-run some of the 1000, we will certainly be driving around towns... so I'm taking a registration with me.

I've heard that there are some areas of California that do not require emissions tests. I'll look into that. Thanks guys.

Yes, but you still have to have it smogged when it changes hands. If you can have it done that first time, then you are good to go. Then the only drawback is that the CA DMV requires that you have insurance and proof of it when you send in your registration.

Thanks for the response Straightaxle. I was really curious about this topic but have never seen any discussions on it anywhere.
