I'm really kicking myself for not Buying my own race radios as of yet....
I would of loved to of had my radio So I could keep an earhttp://bestsmileys.com/listening/1.gif For any of you that might need some help.. During the 250... http://www.thewebwheeler.com/forums/images/smilies/paperbag.gif

I'm not much for purely spectating...
I wanna be part of the action....

I personally really see myself buying the radio (I forget what its called) That will allow me to program what ever Freq's I want at any time into my radio...

Being that I want to Offer my Pre-run/Chase duties to any of you that might need a hand, I need to able to enter random freq's into my radio.
Yet it seems many people are against this...

No I wont split Freqs, I will only be on your teams established Freqs.
its the freq slpitters that fawk it up for all.

I've got an Icom 50 in my truck from PCI. www.pciraceradios.com/catalog/default.spx?ProductID=10477
They loaded the few channels I needed for chasing with Matt Carter and filled the rest with several of the top teams who buy from them. Works good but I need the external speaker. Must be getting deaf in my old age. The ability to program your own channels would be cool. I bought from PCI because of the Weather Man's contribution to the sport.

Thanks for that Link.

I wonder which ones the better one to buy & why...
Like I said I wanna be able to enter what ever freq's I want, Because one day I might be chasing for Moss & then on another day I might be chasing for you. http://bestsmileys.com/clueless/4.gif

 My dad just recently did a butt-load of reserach on this.

Two websites to look at: antennafarm.com, and hamradio.com.

Kenwood makes a 65 watt, as I recall, that is very affordable (I'm talking less than 200 bucks). Mike Coleman swears this is a better radio than the ICOM. I believe my dad's research confirmed this, but don't take my word for it (do your own). I haven't seen the new programmable Kenwood, but my dad says it "looks REEALY cool".

Me personally.... my race truck has an old hand-me-down Roadmaster from PCI... older version. I hear the newer top-o-the-line Kenwoods are amazing, but like 700 bucks.

We also found some great deals on hand-helds on e-bay, and they seem to work great.

Another option, borrow a good radio fom a friend, and then refuse to give it back. Tell him it was a "clean steal". he he (worked for me all these years!!)

I have the Kenwood you speak of in my rock buggy (65 watt) I use it in conjunction with a hand held during rock crawling comps and stay on race frequencys that I get from teams I chase or pit with. I love that radio, and a few of my freinds also have them. They work real well and are affordable. Just unplug your mic at races.

Are you talking to me?
Because, the Only reason I'm buying one is to Chase...

& to be honest, if the Moss Bros aint at the race I'm at, I'd like to monitor the Class 3 Crowd in case they need help & I'm in the area.

UUUUHHHHMMMM no! Just a note.
Between hijacking threads and insulting the mod, maybe I should just Lurk?

I've been chasing for Pflueger for 2 years now and we unplug the mic when we are not using the radio to keep from risking a dead key. Nothing worse then jamming your race frequency by accident. Just a word of advice. I'm sure everyone here has dealt with the Weathermans difficulties when it comes to that. Did you skip the coffee this morning?

BTW it unplugs real easy on the Kenwood, and you can keep it in the glovebox, works great at keeping my Jabber Jaws partner from babbleing on race day.:D

No offense taken, Its the Entertai-net after all.
The Kenwood is great value.

How do I get the site to stop emailing me? Makes it hard work when I keep getting emails sucking me back into Bullitin boards.

The default setting in your options is instant e-mail notification when people reply to your threads.....

Set it to something other than instant.

I'm still waiting for your Buggy thread in our off topic forum.....
because I was'nt kidding I like to learn more about the buggy & its underground action.

I bought a V8000, an Antenex mag-mount and an Antenna Specialties antenna. I haven't had a chance to use it, but I can tell you it has more options than I'll ver know what to do with.

I only plan on spectating with it and using it for emergencies. I may not even modify it....

I think most sanctioning bodies mandate that you have a non-programmable race-radio if you are chasing/racing.

Who's radios?.....Rugged Race Radio!
Why?....Excellent Products, Service, and prices! (25-30% less than PCI)

Without going into to much detail, I will say that I think PCI is lacking in customer service and they are price gouging most if not all! Go to http://ruggedraceproducts.com/ for all your radio needs... They will set you up for significantly less than PCI and he will sell you his best antenna, no matter what radio you are running. Not the case with PCI....PCI will ONLY sell you the best antenna if you buy their highest end radios. (of course, PCI doesn't even tell you this). My buddy recently set up his racer and chaser and saved over 25% total package over what PCI wanted for the same stuff (with substandard antenna from PCI)....and PCI doesn't use military spec mics and they are not shielded wires. Rugged does! The guys are very racer friendly as well. He was the supplier for PCI and Racer X. Greg is the owner and Jerome is his main man at the shop. They are VERY knowledgeable and have excellent customer service. They offer more than what is on their website, so give them a call after checking it out to see what you need. Rugged Race Products is one of my sponsors for RelentlessPursuitRacing. Believe me, they are a pleasure to do business with and you won't be disappointed. Top quality products, excellent service, quick turn around times. Tell them I sent you his way. Jerry

Yes, you just can't transmit without the modification on a V8000 or other amateur radios.

Since when have they started inspecting chase/Pit trucks?

I don't know that chase trucks are ever inspected, but from what I'm told that's the rule. Supposedly modified radios degrade overall communications on a heavy traffic race-day. If that's true, I would hate to be part of the problem.

TJ: yes
Ensenada: yes
Ojos: patchy
Tres: no way
Trinidad: yes, but some dropped calls
San Vincente: yes
Uruapan area: patchy

also if you're in a canyon .. no way.

Just for an idea of our phone, mine is a RAZR and my friends is a Blueberry. The Blueberry did a lot better than my RAZR as far as dropping calls. But then again I think my RAZR sucks even in the states. Also, there is quite a few calls getting dropped ... but you can usually get your message through in a few calls, so not too bad.

Jonny, did you have to use international calling country codes to make a call to your buddy even if he had a USA number? What about Satellite phones, does anyone recommend a good satellite phone or are there any companies that rent them?

I think most sanctioning bodies mandate that you have a non-programmable race-radio if you are chasing/racing.

you can listen without mods, but not transmit.

you can run / use anything you want as a chase or specator. no mandating anything. no one can tell you to remove or not be on a freq. there are no license requirements down in baja so no one really owns any type of freq. most is courtesy. weatherman asks that if you are gonna listen to his broadcast, you remove your mike to not "accidently" trigger and go live. as far as the IV8000, i went thru several of them in one year. not good in the elements. good for chase, not good for race - easy to mod, they are cheap, and they have many features. i still have one today that i use strictly for monitoring even though it is moded. nice thing about the new radios out there is that you can set them up on a "tone" feature in which anyone can hear you, but only other radios on the same tone code can transmit to you - therfore, you knock out "ALL" unwanted transmisions onto your freq. in other words, they can hear you, but you wont hear them.

Blanco

Sounds like a Nice feature.. :)

One of these days I'll start reading the directions.

That seems to be the consensus. I looked around online and the V8000 got great reviews from HAMs. Mine is in a sealed cab so I'm guessing it'll work well for me. As for the mod, I'll probably do it eventually, but I thought I'd at least wait until it was out of warranty....

Thanks for the info Ricardo.

I heard pretty much all the same things about the v8000, so i decided on the f121, found a great deal on one on e-bay, came programed with all the standard channels, plus more, so i'm happy.

Nope ... Just dialed straight through like we were in America. Last time when we were down there did the same thing. So three times down with the same results. But, becareful with cell phones b/c from what I understand there is a way to "capture" you're number if you're on the phone and they people can use devices that somehow use your signal to dial out. Happened to me last time, had a bunch of crazy calls all over America. After some hasseling with Cingular though they cleared the charges.
