WD40 and Scotchbrite.

Since I don't have enough time in a day to keep up with something like that here in Sacramento (kinda damp in the winter), we try to paint or powdercoat what we can to keep it less ugly.

This is a very good question.....
Most of the cages in ORR are made with chromoly steel, it will last longer but will rust with time, DOM cages can rust overnight if leaved unprotected, WD-40 or any moisture repellent do the trick until the cage building is finish, then is cleaned and "painted" with clear varnish, which gives you protection from the elements and that glossy "bare metal" look.

we avoid paint, clears, powder coats, etc, etc, etc, etc.

BUT, we also cater to a crowd that pays to get their cars completly stripped down to nothing, power washed clean, then COMPLETLY shot with WD40 and Scotched down. then they are inspected for cracks - THE MAIN REASON FOR NOT PAINTING A RACE CAR! like moss said though, if you are short on time, paint it. or, get your local neighborhood kids to have a scotchbrite party!

originally, i really wanted to paint my whole cage, so I wouldn't have to worry about the rust, etc. But since my truck stays in Nevada and Idaho, it hasn't been a big problem (4130 chromoly, like posted above, seems to do better). the problem is... once the cage is in... good luck painting the darn thing. AFter my cousin rolled the truck, we had to cut top off and repair the cosmetic damage... THAT would have been the time to paint the cage.... but due to some DELAYS (don't get me started).... there wasn't time. WD40... applied often, especially before and after the race.

are there any water-crossings in mexico?
