Hey,
My name is Dave and I'm very interested in building a Class 3 racer.
I've been playing in the dirt for many years in various forms and finally decided its time to go racing. I currently have a dual locked Toyota 4x4 IFS pickup and a Honda CR500 as my dirt toys. I'm selling my stock '04 Ranger 2wd to get startup funds for this build (and to free up some parking)
I want to start my build soon and am in the research phase of the project. I'm trying to decide what type of rig to build.
My interest in this started when I learned about the Jeepspeed challenge. I was thinking I might build a 4wd Cherokee to Jeepspeed/Score Class 3 specs. Of course I eventually want to run the Baja 1000.
My thinking is I want to build something to start competing ASAP. I want to pick a vehicle that will allow me to do that but still offer a platform I can build on.
I really just want to go racing and want to do it ASAP.
I found this site and hope that I can learn a thing or two here so that I make fewer mistakes while I take on this project.
Thanks for having me,
Dave

The ford bronco seems to be the natural choice. You can pick them up for dirt cheap and they make pretty good racers. I would only build a jeep speed if I were planning on running that series.
Welcome! I wish you luck with your project. Hopefully yours won't take as long as mine is.

I was trying to open up my options for races to run and the Jeep Speed thing is what got me started on this idea of racing.
Of course I'm not married to the idea of building a Jeep. I'm definately considering other options.

Are you going to the 1000?
& besides a Jeep have you givin any serious thought towards any other body style?

Not going to the 1000 this year. But I was thinking about going to the BITD Race in Henderson in a month.
I found your site because of your post on SCORE Class 3 rules. I was googling it an that post on this site came up. I poked around for a bit and decided to join up.
Class 3 sounds really interesting to me. I prefer 4wd to 2wd (mainly because I hate getting stuck) and it seems like older rigs can be competitive and can be built cheaper for Class 3.
I'm really green when it comes to off road racing. I've been beating up 4wd's and dirt bikes for 15 years. Now I really just want to race and I'll do it in anything. I don't like my Toyota for it because I know how weak the IFS is, broken it a few times. So it makes a good beater, daily rig, and bike hauler.
Seems like Bronco's are really popular.
I'll consider anything that will get me racing ASAP.

Thanks for you input on how you found the site.
I guess I need to get back off my lazy butt & get back to posting towards completing the Rules... :o

I used to live in Burbank. Off of N. Hollywood way and Burbank Blvd. Was only there a short time though, 6 months.
I was looking at the entry list for this year 1000. There are 9 entries and looks like 4 Broncos. Maybe I should look into that some more.

I've not checked yet today.
But last time I looked Calls 3 had a total of 9 entries.
Broncos, Blazers, Toyota FJ's, Land rovers etc etc....

That's exactly the reasons I chose the class! It also had to be a Ford because I already had the motor sitting on the floor of my garage.
As far as getting started, (unless you have unlimited $$$$) the absolute fastest way is to buy an existing truck. There are good and bad points to this, you end up with someone elses problems, but as long as it has a legal cage, it allows you to get racing right away. It takes FOREVER and takes a huge amount of dedication to build a new truck. As far as the Cherokee's, there have been some that have been built to Jeepspeed rules that have run with us in the past, and they were every bit as competitive as anything out there, so don't overlook them as a way into the class.

Thanks for the advice. Buying an existing truck sounds like good advice. I'll start looking around for one. I definately have limited funds.
I guess what it comes down to is bang for the buck. I'd rather enter a race sooner, and learn as I compete rather than spend years building the ultimate rig.
Dave
Edit: Good luck in Baja
