There is a large gap in photos here due to the amount of driving I did between these two photos. The only other time I saw the truck was around dawn on Wednesday and I was too busy with the pit stop to take any pictures.

After timing out just shy of the 1000 mile mark, the race car is recovered with a severely cracked transmission housing. The crew stops for a snack while some local boys check out the truck.

He was very lightly bumped and did not have much damage. We followed him honking for a while and he had several good places to move over but would not. We were not aware that class 11 got special treatment. If that is the case we need to know what proper etiquette is so we can follow it. We get about 3 sec. to get out of the way of faster racers and seldom get nurfed because we get out of the way. But this year I was nerfed around RM 850 because I did not get out of the way fast enough. My bad

The pictures show he had no where to go by the time you actually cought him!!Anybody can see it in the pictures!!! You in your colorfull road block could not have pulled over there even if you had to!! Whats the real story here?? Did you get mad because a Volkswagen that obviosly passed you and was infront of you had no were to go and you were in that much of a hurry in a 1300 mile race at race mile 31 that you had to ruin this guys day?? anybody with commin sence could see there is no protection at all on the back of a class 11 per class 11 rules, especially you as you were behind him, if he would have been a foot or two over you would have destroyed his alternator, fan shroud, carberator and completely put him out of the race that close to the start line If there were that many places to pull over, and you were so much faster, why not just pass him. The lack of talent shown here shows how much some racers are put in danger because of drivers like this. Could you not tell that your bumper was about the same hight as the rear window. In my opinion, you should stand up and pay for his damages. But people that do this kind of thing in the first place, usually dont have the integrity to do such of a thing. I also have freinds that were near a pit that herd this driver bragging how he helped a class 11 out of the way, I am really impressed!!

You should slow you roll and wait till you hear the other side of the story. You are just looking at one picture and one small section of the course so unless you were there you don't know exactly what happen.

First, as soon as I can get on the class 11 site I will apoligize for nurfing him and offer to pay for his hood damage. We were not aware of the unwriten rule of not nurfing the 1100 cars. About having a place to pull over, if you will open your eyes and look at the pictures you will see several places to pull over, the right side of the first picture is a wide area and the turn in the 4-5 picture are good places to pull over but not long enough to pass. Also notice that we were only right on the 1100 for a short time then backed off several times all the while honking the horn. The driver did not intend to hit the 1100 car when he did but was again trying to get him to move over, the contact was after these pictures. No we were not mad about 1100's passing us. While we were broken we were passed by a lot of racers including 1100's and even Rino's, they all moved over when we caught them and ask. Later we also pulled 2 1100 cars out of the silt beds including the winner of that class I think. I am over my rant LOL Nice pictures guys. I only posted my nerfing comment here because of the class 11 conversation. Your offer to fix the guys damage, puts you in a very small minority and changes my feelings tword the whole situation. For those who dont know me, I have raced this sport comming up on 33 years now and I have won the Baja 1000 9 times and believe me, I have seen just about everything in that amount of time as to nurfing and vehicle damage, 98 percent just walk away and leave bad feelings that never go away. just so all the class 3 people know,The 11 car driver that got nurfed is one of the nicest people you would ever have the privlige of meeting, its great that the bad feelings will go away in this situation. I am glad to see class 3 comming back with some numbers. when I started in this sport in 1975 with my dad, there were a lot of entrys in class 3, infact I have a program from 1978 for the off road world championships, and it shows 23 entrys in the program. It would be great to see that many again. Again I enjoyed the pictures and really like this site. Sorry Blanco for venting here last nite, it wont happen again---Dave Hendrickson---Dave-co

We always try to play by the rules. We just were not aware of the rule/problem with the 11 cars. In the 5 years that we have tryed the 1000 this was the first time we had anyone not move over when ask. In the pictures you can see that we were trying to get the 1100 car to move over, Even in the last picture we were not hitting the bug that cam later. Anyway I am posting here to let everyone know that I apoligize for hitting the bug and to let everyone know that it will not happen again. I have only had good experences with the Baja and hate to think that we were the cause of less than good experences for others. I have E-mailed with Robert and will call him tomorrow. I am done with the thread and thank you Cam for allowing it.

in reference to the lites on the blue baja bug in tech. we ran those on our quad (one pencil beam / one wide angle) and all riders were very pleased. cost is high - comparable to hid i believe but they are supposed to be extremely durable - apparently the salesman was whacking them against a post to prove this! they were easy to spot at nite due to their distinctive design and cool factor is high if your into that. i'm told all different widths are available.

Cool! We are running right up there behind the Trophy Trucks. A lot of people making some heroic repairs after Bay of LA. They claim that they had a 100% finish rate with the Baja Challenge cars, but with that kind of damage from a big time roll over, it is hard to believe. Nice commercial for El Cid restraunt there at the end.

Driver was Bill Saunders. He was the Publisher of Four Wheeler Magazine. When I worked at Stroppe's we built him a Jeep in about 81 or 82 (I think).

I posed this shot for my buddies back in Pennsylvania that run Exton Transmissions (http://extontransmissions.com/index.html), they are not affiliated with this truck or the team but they build my dad's drag racing transmissions, and I happened to be wearing their t-shirt when we pulled the trans. Also their slogan is "We Go The Extra Mile," so I thought it was funny/appropriate. Besides it was probably in the upper 30's and raining back in PA when this photo was taken.
