Baja Friends and Family,

Team Donahoe has made it home safe and sound from another Baja adventure less one member (Bob Bower) who is celebrating Thanksgiving in San Ignacio. I’m sure he is fine and eating turkey burritos as I write this. I wanted to forward this to all my friends who race and Love going to Baja.

Ok this is fricken scary (see below story). We need to re-think our Baja trips… Any input would be great!!!

Bob Bower, I think a re-vision of “What about you” is in order.

Here are some of my thoughts that need to be added to the list of things to do while driving the highways in Mexico and should be added to “What about you”

Always caravan with at least two trucks.
Stay a min of 300 yards behind for reaction time
Have radio contact between trucks. (THIS IS A MUST)
SAT PHONES ARE A MUST with pre-programmed numbers of loved ones and emergency contacts. (SCORE OPPS NUMBERS)
If the race goes to LA Paz or CABO plan for a 3 day trip home. 2 days is pushing your luck and 1 day is just stupid.
Complete Northern and Southern Chase teams are a must. (NEVER CHASE THE WHOLE RACE)
Try not to drive at night.
DON’T TRUST ANYONE…But be respectful.
GET A TRAUMA KIT!!!! The standard first aid kit that SCORE requires is not enough down there. Most Mexican ambulances are nothing more then a van with a bed in them with NO medical supplies.
Put a kill switch in your chase truck truck!!!!
LOCK EVERYTHING!!!!
IONEARTH Style tracking units look like a good deal for chase trucks!!!!!

Moreover then the highways dangers of a crash or getting trucks and equipment stolen, now we have to think about being kidnapped at gun point. How do we protect ourselves? The only thing I can think of is team work. No one should travel alone… no one! I’m writing this as my buddy Bob Bower is traveling through Mexico with his wife in his Bronco by themselves. For the first time I’m worried even for a guy who knows Mexico like the back of his hand. SO if any of you can add to my list …Please do.

Sal, What else can we do? What can you do? How can we help?

I absolutely love Racing in Baja. This was my 23 year as a competitor and I have gone down to the 1000 Ten years before that racing with my Dad. It is woven in the Donahoe family life. Hell I built my business and life around it. I want my son Parker to experience it. WE HAVE TO DO SOMETHING TO MAKE IT SAFER!!!!!! Or very soon families like the Donahoes wont be going to Baja.

Feed back?

I been doing the same for the last 3 hours, had to stop, feel very sick for what happened to the Halls.....

Remember were this happened and at what time???
I think we should revisit this tread and let everyone Else now there is an option, can any of you guy post this link in RDZ.

There also a Ryan Arciero post in RDZ and it happened in one of the spots described my tread (with a new twist).

Wow... I hadn't heard about this or others. It's bad enough with narrow roads and no shoulders... but to add this crap?

The racers need to send a clear message to Sal. Spend some of the millions you are making on us to address this with Mexico, and assure us we are safe... sadly, I fell in love with Mexico all over again, but this is like a slap in the face. Guess my future plans for taking my daughter down are scrapped indefinitely.

Thanks for the post.

This story really has me realizing how lucky I've been down there.
I say this because I tend to drive to & from alone. :o

For example this past race I drove down there alone & roamed around Ensenada alone & then finally went to La Bufodora around 10pm.
& then in the morning left to Contingency alone.
Then headed out to Mikes Sky Ranch alone.
& went all the way back home all alone again..

& If not for the race radio, I really would be alone.
I guess I had a false sence of being ok if I broke down or worse.
because I could call on the race radio & if not that I also have a CB.
& my cell phone does have international calling, but who would I call while down there that could help me?

I suppose I am a pefrect target when I think about it. :o

& yeah this is exactly like what FJ40 warned us about awhile back.
I really starting to think about not going back there alone anymore.
Unless I can join a few others I might be best off staying home.

But think about it, The halls were part of a caravan & just fell behind some.

I hear you Cam. I have grown up camping down there and since my parents were born in raised in Mex and I was pretty much raised in Baja with family still in Rosarito I never gave it much thought to drive down by myself to meet up with friends and family. Just think about the 500 when you and I were cruising around and chasing for Raffo at 3:00 a.m. in the morning in the middle of nowhere in my CJ, I'm sure we were an easy target then. Looks like I'll be showing up to more MDR races to get my desert fix.

P.S. Damn does that mean I have to change my license plates to ZUNCALI?

Yeah that did cross my mind, even being two big guys like us, I dont think would be much of a deterent for them..

Hi Folks,
I have been reading and thinking about this whole issue and discussing it with my family and friends. Since this particular website and the various threads are important to me and my sons, here is my two cents worth. I have been traveling throughout Baja since I was 8 (over 40 years but who's counting?) with my Dad. My sons have been going down with me since they have been out of diapers (my wifes rule).

The one thing I have taught them when traveling Baja is realize you are in a different country. This means different rules (you are guilty until proven innocent) and understanding their major export the past century+ is drugs up from mainland Mexico into the USA. This means corruption, graft and a mess of people getting caught up in things that are unsavory.:(

If the Halls or for that matter, the McMillin racing team and all the other racers, chasers, spectators, visitors or any one else wishing to go to a different country other than the good ole USA would be at least up to date with what our government is saying about travels in said country. This information is available at http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/pa/pa_3028.html.
Since the article at the State site was dated well before the B1K's celebration of 40 years, I would hope some would have read, share (i.e. Mr. Fish or SOMEONE from SCORE) and consider the potential dangers of heading down south to race, help and enjoy the most beautiful peninsula in the world (again, my personal opinion).

That being said, Mr. Donahoe has some EXCELLENT points which should be carefully and seriously considered. I would add having the number to the local consulate and every bit of two-way communications that you can carry. I am still somewhat hesitant to believe that NO ONE in their caravan didn't:
A. Notice that they were falling behind.
B. Have radio communications with the others in their caravan or group.
C. Realize that traveling at night is 1000 times more dangerous than during the day (that would be true in any country) and requires more keeping track of the ENTIRE caravan (each truck w or w/o rig should understand they are responsible for the one directly behind them)

I know the story below will scare most into not going back. I completely understand and respect their decisions. I hope they will consider planning and preparing for travel in a different country and what all that entails if the decision is to come back for more of the Baja hospitality I've come to love, respect and enjoy. Again, just my two cents (pesos?) worth. BTW Blanco, a race radio is a single travelers best friend along with a marine radio. You can always find someone monitoring and willing to help almost eveywhere you travel now in Baja (smaller world with those comms).;)

Hi, everyone. Well, I will be in my own race truck ASAP.....but........I have been researching the other race sanctions in the USA to see what they are offering and the classes they are running. As you know, I have been pitting and chasing for Old Horse Racings BC Bronco's and West Coast Bronco's, and Moss Brothers racing over the last four years in Baja and just recently co-dogged 6.5 hours in the Moss Brothers Bronco at the 2007 Baja 1000........ but Baja is getting REALLY bad .......very dangerous roads, police, federalies, banditos.......lots of wrecks on the bad highways, lots of crazy chase truck drivers, kidnappings and robberies at gunpoint and getting worse and more common each race. It really sucks, and as much as I hate to admit it, I think I'm done with Baja for now. I WILL be racing, NO DOUBT, but looking seriously at BITD and MDR now instead of SCORE because of the issues in Baja. Even if I am willing to take the chance myself, the problem is I would be asking 15 to 20 friends and family to go there at great risk to support me with logistics, chasing and pitting. I still would love to do the Baja 1000 someday, but i think for now, I am going to look at BITD and MDR and stay stateside. (I'll take a look at SNORE, MORE, and a few others as well). By doing so, it will also be much more conducive to significant others, family, and kids as well to come out to the the races (safer). There really is nothing like Racing in Baja and I still may end up there racing somehow, someway, someday if it improves. I will still build my truck to meet SCORE specs, but I think for now I will go this route. The "Risk VS. Gain" just doesn't add up in a positive manner right now for me to justify racing in Mexico. (and its not just because of the issues at the '07 B1k, but they definately helped make the decision easier). With that said, BITD does not have an SUV short wheel base 4x4 class anymore (right now), so I am also re-thinking what class truck I am going to build. Although I have bought a lot of parts for my build, most of them could be used for just about any class that I have an interest in. Whichever class I decide, I will build it to meet the requirements of as many race sanctions as possible as to not limit my possibilities of where I can race. I know this will be a surprise to many, but I think it is the right decision for me and those that I will be asking to help me with my whole race program. It's likely that I would still run the SCORE races in the US. Stay tuned for more info and decisions. :) Jerry

this really sucks. just horrible news. BUT, do you guys really think this is happening in Mexico and Mexico only???? we all take the risk once we cross the border. lets face it, part of racing in mexico is the risk you take and sign up for. i am in no way defending what happend. personally - curb side justice is needed here. but if you guys are gong to stay away from mexico becouse of a couple of incidents (and i say a couple becouse there must have been THOUSANDS of us that went down to spectate, help, or be a part of the 1000 this year) and like every year you get a handfull of bad stories. Kreg is right, be alert, travel in numbers, and always stay in communication with your convoy............BUT if you decided to not go to mexico, here is what you face at home!!!

dont drive thru arizona, you might get carjacked........... www.azcentral.com/arizonarepublic/news/articles/1128carjack1128.html

stay off the streets of detroit, the same might happen there...........
www.clickondetroit.com/news/14713864/detail.html

feel safer at home? watch out! home invasion robbery!!!!............
www.highspringsherald.com/articles/2007/11/29/news/news09.txt

armed home invasion robbery!.................
http://www.eveningsun.com/localnews/ci_7570369

how about this one.....

Wilmington police are investigating a home invasion robbery Tuesday night during which one of the armed robbers held a gun to the head of a child while the mother was forced to find money for the robbers.
here is the story...................................
http://www.delawareonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20071128/NEWS/71128050

so now what do you do?? dont go to mexico? dont drive your car? dont leave your house? the crime might just be knocking at your door next time!!!!

fact is crime is here, and crime is there. shootings, drugs, carjackings, armed robbery, rape.......................for every one instance you give me that happend down there for the baja 1000, i will find you one that happend here.

again, not justifying what happend, but dont think that staying home becouse someone faced an unfortunate incident will keep you from ever experiencing the same here!

that is my opinion

I've been going to Baja alone for a short while now & have never been jacked by cops or Banditos..

But what realy is starting to scare me is those damn super narrow roads with no shoulders & drops at about 10 inches from the white line.

Yeah maybe I'm a wuss.... :o

Yeah maybe I'm a wuss.... :o

ok see even that scares me!!!! becouse that is something you wont find much of here in san diego!!

but come on, lets go on statistics here.............so Kreg has been going down there for 20+ years and nothing has happend, YET. sonner or later you can expect to have something happen just as if you are likely to get hit by drunk driver over here.

does it happend all the time? yes, we all know for a fact there is someone drunk behind the wheel who should not be on a daily basis. does that mean everynight you will get hit by a drunk driver? no. but the fact is that it does happen and someday it can happen to you.

the theory of "not going to baja anymore" becouse someone got jacked (in my opinion) is like saying "i am only going to drive to and from work and not anymore after that so i dont get hit by a drunk driver. your chances are better, but they still exist.

and i speak of experience, not of thought. i have been going to mexico with family, by myslef, for racing, for camping, for business, etc etc etc for 30+ years. i have a picture of me in San Felipe that was taken about 32 years ago. (talk about a lonely little fishing village!), with the occasional "pay the ticket on the spot" i have had nothing happen to me to keep me away.

so, sorry to hear you guys wont be going to Mexico anymore. be safe here at home!

that is the exact reason among others that i will "NEVER" go to mexico some may say other wise but as for me it will NEVER happen, i have always heard bad things happening down there and IMHO its not worth it to me to have someone come up to me at gun point and steal my **** cause they will have to kill me before they get there grubby lil hands on whats not theres

on a better note
im glad to hear that everyone is ok and hope the kids after all are doin better after this experiance and im sure they wont be goin back

Talk about beating a dead horse....
I've lived here in Mexico most of my life (43 years) except the time I lived in the U.S. (5 years), and I am still alive....and YES,

I've been burglarized at home
I've had at least 4 cars stolen from me
I've ridden for two hours in the trunk of a corrupt's cop car
I`ve had a gun put to my head (S*** my undies!!!)
I've been stranded in the desert w no cell, nextel or enough water
blah, blah, bla...

YES it happens a lot more here in Mexico, but I know and accept the risks, I coul be livin' in the States, but, I like it, no, I LOVE It HERE, Mexico is a 3rd. world country, it's NOT the US, we all know it, can we all take it as it is? no, it's not for everyone, it is dangerous, and ugly in some places, but also unique, and wild, and beautiful, and tasty, and friendly... it's the land of contrast. ("lets face it, its not for Wsses" S.F. in D.T.G)

If you come, please be careful, you all know by now what or what not to do, but I, and the good citizens of Mexico will always welcome you like a good primo....
Or, stay at home, be safe, don't go to Watts, but try not to make the whole world the same as the US, it could get boring....

Viva Baja,

Pete

I've been reading all these blogs on race-dezert, DR etc...about how dangerous Baja is and all the things that been happening but go look at your own local news and you'll see the same thing. Some guy shoots up El Cajon and kills 2 people, drunk driver hits a house, Mother leave baby in the dumpster, Pro football player shot and killed in his home this type of thing happens EVERYWHERE! You can either let it get to you or keep living life...

I love BAJA I have been going since I was in diapers, I followed my dad in my Jeep for the first time when I was 16 to San Felipe, before I drove down he always told me to be cautious, drive slower than you feel comfortable, Keep your headlights on, Hide your cash and only leave 20-40 bux in your wallet, If you see sirens at night Dont pull over at night in the middle of nowhere drive until you find a public place(Ive done this and kept driving until the Federally check point , the sirens turned around once I got to the federal checkpoint, the federally told me they were probably banditos:eek:that was about 4 months ago), if you dont think the police officer is fair then goto court and pay a few bux, dont keep a knife on you leave it in your center console. Just realize this is NOT your country, so be respectful. I never feel comfortable on those roads but neither do I with all the idots driving in the states, swerving around our 5 lane highways.

I have never had any problems after 23 years of my life going down to Baja, except for my own young and dumb fault...which we had to pay our way ($100bux) out of with and a little help from Fransisco and Mauro at the Bar Miramar:D I have met and know so many good people down in Baja I will forever keep going down and visiting, and keep living my baja experience. I learned alot down there and would not be the person I am today, If I didnt have have BAJA!

Viva Baja,

Shane Relph
