What do you pre-run with?

do you have an pre-runner that's the equivalent to your Race rig?
Or might you pre run your racer?

Its a rock crawler yes.

It does fairly well as a pre runner, we ran almost 600 miles the week before the 1000 this year on road and off. The highlight was La Purisma to Loreto with an average speed of 42mph, top speed almost 90. Not bad for a crawler IMHO.

Sounds different than the Rock racing I've seen.
if a single race last 9 to 10 hours....

Its sorta off topic for this thread but, how long are your course's & such?

Maybe you should start an entirely new thread on this interesting subjuct? http://www.thewebwheeler.com/forums/images/smilies/shrug.gif

Hey Jeff , You've basically Highjacked this Thread & for me to move your indavidual Post would'nt make sence, because it dont have the surounding post that gave it where its reached....

I'm sure there a few of us that would like to learn more......
But lets keep this thread ON TOPIC.

The topic is Pre-running..
I understand you pre-ran with it....

But I think what your telling us about is more of a new form of racing than Pre-running..

& we're gonna have lots of queston & we're gonna wanna see Pictures...
& so that would basically HighJack This thread off topic..

Please be so kind as to start a new thread with its own Title so we can Follow along...

Now back to the Topic at hand...

How many of you Pre-run your race rigs?

I my-self am not a racer, But do own a pre-runner ( Avatar )
I see lots of race looking rigs if not the actual race cars out there running the course with me..

I know the high dollar teams have fully race ready Pre-runners & push the limits some to get an idea of what to expect out of there racer..

But we're talking class 3 here...

I've heard of some teams that pre-run the course on Bikes... & then race their trucks..

I had fun Pre-Running the MDR Outlaw 250 with Chris Raffo & he rode shot gun paying attention to the course & options.
I forget if was actually taking notes or not...

But since I dont race & just like to Race around ( Goofing off ) I wonder about the real racer's & how important it is to you & why & what you prefer to Pre-Run with.

With the exception of Laughlin, or occasional testing such as San Felipe, I do not pre-run with my race Bronco. I typically scrounge whatever I can for the times I do manage to pre-run. For the Baja 500 last year I bought a Bronco off e-bay and did roughly 200 miles in it. It was... uh... interesting. My F-150 pre-runner is so trashed from years of abuse, that I rarely take it out anymore. I have gone with buddies in long-travel dual-sport cars, our day-to-day driver pickup trucks, or whatever I can arrange. I would like to do it on a bike some day, but the money gets poored into the racing program, not a new bike. :( Often times I don't get the chance to really pre-run. FYI- the maps are out for San Felipe - it's WAY different. I might be "arranging" something to pre-run this course! :D

Nope - Zoo road is OUT. Probably too close to the Eldorado Ranch housing development.

200 miles, more washes, less high speed and probaly less whoops.

Have you ever actually Pre-Run an actual race course?

Pre-running assumes that you are actually racing, hence you pre-run the course to get familliar with it.

Blanco, have you ever raced? If not, what are you pre-running for?

I don't want to sound like an ass, but it cracks me up when non racers go "pre-running"

Pre-running (at least in Mexico) is what sets Off Road apart from just about all the other motorsports, its open to everybody. You don't get to take your grocery getter out to Daytona and check out the track at will! If you're a photographer or even just a spectator, you can go and scout a good spot, or just get some appreciation for what kind of abuse the race vehicles go through.

On the other hand all the extra traffic on the course beats it up all that much more. You also have gates and things to deal with that aren't there on race day. Just remember, if there is a gate there, it is there for a reason, and have some respect for that and close it when you go through. Treat it like you would want someone else to that was just passing through your own front or back yard.

Let me ask you, What do you know of me.. To start Cracking up at me Not knowing what your talking about does make you sound like an ass! http://www.thewebwheeler.com/forums/images/smilies/m2c.gif

Does it count when my Passenger is gonna race the course?
& I wanna drive while he takes notes on the course?
Or when one of another friends brother needs to run the course in his race truck ( Pre-Run ) to work out potential bugs & we need to stay behind him in case the suspected issues develop?

& since I crew with people when I go to a race, I've never gone purely as a spectator.
I like to know what my team is going to be going through & how I might get to them if they will need help.

& then since my Truck is built for it, I might find myself on a Off weekend letting it strecth it legs.. on a course.

Is that wrong should I not run course's any more if I'm not actually gonna be in the race rig during the race? http://www.thewebwheeler.com/forums/images/smilies/4.gif

Ok I suppose next time I go to run a course, I'll just say I went wheeling really fast off road this weekend.

The term pre-running has become a pretty generic term...
That I myself fought it, allowing my self to even call my truck a pre-runner for the longest time but since people would argue with me & tell me it is a pre-runner I finally gave in & said Ok I guess it is... http://www.thewebwheeler.com/forums/images/smilies/shrug.gif

You know what, Since I'm not an actual racer I suppose I should'nt of started this site Huh?

The one thing I must tell anyone reading this Pre-running a course (Oooops, I mean driving off road really fast through a race course  ) Has taught me a much greater respect for the actual racers..
Me in my street drivin Bronco beating my way through the course seeing what my friends (& People I dont know as well) race through at even higher speeds than what my Bronco is able to handle in the terrain they race in is pretty amazing.
Most people I know ( including you BrokenBronco ) would only crawl through alot of the stuff these people race in...

You dont have to be racing the event to pre-run, you pre-run to help your team by having an understanding of the course and showing the driver, co-driver and pit crew the terrain.

It helps to know where you are if something were to happen to the vechical and need to get to them.

You can pre-run in alot of differant set ups, I go out on my 400ex and ride sections of the course(until my bronco is done). It gives you an opputunity to find quicker and safer routes from your pit. You can also figure out where the best spots are to set up a pit.

Pre-running is the best part for me, if we couldn't pre-run because were not racing I wouldn't enjoy helping the teams as much.

Guys (and gals), pre-running is how we all get our start. We go out and run the course, thinking we are AMAZING at how fast and smooth we can be. We pat ourselves on the back and have a good time doing it. We break a few things and learn along the way.

We slowly work our way up to:

a) pitting for someone at our own expense (been there 1000 times)
b) eventually riding with someone (ya-hoo!!)
c) maybe building our own rig and probably having a few races that were disgraceful, when we realize there is more to it than just throwing a cage in the griswald family truckster and going fast. Every time I race I earn respect for those who do it, and do it well. I'm just now getting there and I've been doing this since 2001.

I have pre-run more races (and snuck my way into more pre-runs) in the U.S. than I can count (La Rana, HDRA, Code, SNORE, BORE, SCORE and BITD). I have ridden in anything and everything with no shame (from rental explorers to 250,000 full-blown pre-runners). I'm telling you, dollar-for-dollar, it's the best. Racing is kick-ass... but you are talking about 10 bucks per mile to 3 or 4 times that amount, depending on the race). You get to totally haul ass for a few hours, sometimes more, sometimes less.

Although there are those that are born with a silver-spoon (no worries about them racing class 3 or reading this forum), we are the guys that go out, have fun, and all start from the bottom.

Blanco - you don't have to apologize or be offended.
Brokenbronco - it's just symantics... call it whatever you want - it's still fun. You ask a fair question and I hope you feel these are fair answers!

At the end of the day, when you are sitting in a little bar outside of f'ing NOWHERE, and you are chatting over the day's events with the Herbst brothers, Larry Ragland, Scoop's son, and a bunch of names you guys might not recognize, who cares what you call it??

I will NEVER forget one of my very first pre-runs in Mexico. 15 miles into it, I'm riding shotgun in Mike Coleman's 79 Ford F150 (old-school) pre-runner (we are not racing). Anyway, we lose the course not far from Ensenada. So has everyone else. We end up spending the whole day with some of the biggest names in the sport (at that time). We take turns getting stuck, getting out, opening gates (thanks team-Moss for the input on the gates). Anyway... the best piece of advice I can give ANY team, whether you want to race or just have a good time: BE PREPARED, and just GO. Have a 4x4, a good tow-strap, a good jack and just go. Either "pre-running" or spectating the race. Get far away from town, be prepared with fluids and whatever else you have, and just GO. You will be surprised at the people you meet, and what develops. I have limped home with broken parts and hang-overs, spent some time with the Federales, and countless other stories but never, never regretted it once.

Boy, I feel like watching Dust-to-Glory (again) for some reason.

See you at the races, and Blanco, if you want someone to ride with you to "legitimize" your pre-run up Huatamote, bring-it-on! Our lodging is a bit questionable, but there is always a piece of dirt to toss down a cot and/or a tent.

Pray for warm weather!!!
