snore is running it,we race snore with our class 1 ,8 and 1600 at the kc midnight special and had a blast.snore is more grassroots racing, alot of vintage and lower budget race vehicals. But everyone is talking about this race, sounds like fun.snore says there will be a limit of 325 entrys.

I realized soon after that its SNORE.

& I like the Idea of a grass roots & lower Budget. :)

I might have to look into this.

Might be fun to think about that in the C3CUP? http://www.thewebwheeler.com/forums/images/smilies/humm_smilie.gif

Yes, the Mint 400 is the granddaddy/grand poo-bah of all U.S. off road races. Started as the Stardust 7-11 race in '68 or '69 and then became the Mint when the Mint Hotel started sponsoring it after a year or two. The Mint 400 was a huge race that ran every year until about '88 or '89. After the Mint hotel disappeared, it became the Nissan 400 for several years before disappearing in the early '90s. The Mint is second only to the Baja 1000 in most peoples' minds when you talk about great off road races. Huge purse, huge entries, and huge numbers of spectators.

I heard about this on RDC. The Mint 400 was the 1st off road race ever. My Dad took me in 1973. Big Oly was bad ass. Started my love affair with off road racing and Broncos. I hope its a big success for SNORE.

I was there in 82 and 83. One of the best parts was contingency. Think of contingency and tech in Ensenada for the Baja 1000 taking place on Fremont street in Vegas. At that time Fremont street was actually a street. Parking the haulers was a nightmare. I did not get to see much of the course, but it was said to be tougher than the worst stuff they have now. Will they be using the old course? The start and the Speedrome is all paved over now with the present day speedway. Start was similar to Laughlin, drag race start, but you were on an actual drag strip!

GOOD QUESTION,that race was huge in 1988

Class 4 USED to be long wheelbase 4X4. Rod Hall raced a Dodge, Roger Mears ran a Jeep J10. I chased at the Mint 400 for Lowell Arnold who won Class 4 in a Jeep J10 in 1980.

I have to giggle (in a nice way), that people don't know the legend of this race.

This goes WAY back people. Go read or see "fear and loathing in Vegas"... Hunter S. Thompson. He was a whacked out news reporter covering the insanity of this race.

Oh, and for those who care... it was the FIRST race I ever pitted at... for none other than the Venable Racing Ford of guess who:

Robby Gordon!

:o)

I was hooked for life. Yes, the race had been going on much longer than this, of course. Check out e-bay for the Jim Beam Mint 400 bottles - I think there are like 10 of them... they are awesome. My buddies have the whole collection, by now, I think, and some doozy vintage clothing. I will have to break some out for this race.

and "yes", SNORE is very cool, but Heavy Metal would combine us with the class 8 trucks. I did it once (raced SNORE) and took 3rd of 8.

Iam going to bring my 1969 Hickey # 40 truck, It did race the mint 400 in 1969 so i thought it would be cool to drive it around

My collection from I believe was my dad's last Mint. These were all spares for the driving suit....plus the pit pass. Has the purse changed?? Seems like they would struggle to achieve that $100K even today.

Dude, you bring that truck, and I will buy you a beer. I'm sitting here pondering where we might be able to keep it parked before the race. Depending on your comfort level... I wonder if the Mayor has any events planned for his favorite area, the Freemont Street Experience. It would be awesome to get some of the historic cars/trucks there.

In speaking to my buddy Chris, very "in the know"... he says (unfortunately), we still can't race on the north side of town, and that takes out the traditional "rock garden". this is good and bad. For those that have been there... it SUCKS! Layers of SHALE rocks. Anyway, the bad news, is that he says we are going to be back near Jean...in over-used race course areas.

Tech/contingency should still be pretty damn cool.

I'm going to lobby pops (crew chief) tomorrow to get us signed up.

Class 3 update for the MINT 400:

It would appear that they might be letting Class 3 run, in spite of the fact that SNORE usually lumps us in with Heavy Metal. I say this, because they created a separate forum for Class 3, as many of you know. If you take the Gowlands (racing FOREVER), CHUCK, and Badbones, that is already 3. If I get in, that makes 4, and I bet we can lobby another 6 or more to make 10(+).

It's two weeks after the Baja 250, and I think I know where I'm putting my dollars.

How about it Cam, you don't need Savage to inspect your cage for SNORE. Save the $ and put it towards the legendary MINT 400!!

:) Me too. It is one of those legendary races like the 1000, Parker, or to a smaller extent the Fireworks.

This is going to be awesome. I think that the Xterra that races BITD 3100 might be down for racing. I was told they are going to try and make it. They are more of SM but with SNORE I doubt that the team would want to be put in Mini Metal.

I'll be there...maybe helping a team maybe helping SNORE. I haven't decided yet.

I only spent 109 bucks on my suit 5 years ago, and it works JUST fine. yes, they make 'em in xxl. I know some people are scared to death of a fire. I personally feel that Heaven doesn't want me and Hell is afraid I'm going to take over, so I'm ok.

As for the helmet, and this is a good general statement for all folks. Be VERY careful about what you buy. In 2001 I bought a helmet "new", that I had no idea was about to be "out-dated". SCORE recently announced even newer requirements, with different SNELL requirements than had ever been used before ("M", for "motorcycle classifications", etc.). I know this sounds confusing, but you MUST read the most recent rule book out there before buying a helmet. SCORE has always had the most difficult of the requirements, for helmets AND cages. In fact, the helmet I bought for my dad in 05 is already out-dated now. :o(. This could be a whole thread in itself (radio wiring, SNELL classifications, brands, costs...)

Regarding the cage: You might be surprised Cam, what they would let you get away with. Some series are much more lenient than others.

As for the race... sure, it might make sense to race a shorter race first - can't argue with you there. Got time to squeeze in a cheap MDR race first? As for riding with you... you did just fine. Now turn up the wick a bit. "to finish first, you must first finish!!". Look at the 1000!!! Every time I race I gain more respect for the terrain and what the trucks are capable of doing... and quickly, I might add.

Contingency will be two days. Thursday and Friday, due to the number of entries. It would be nice to plan a class 3 get-together, and/or a Class 3 Cup meeting, but it's hard to say if our collective schedules will come together. I, for example, would like to get this over with on Thursday, and RELAX on Friday!

Most of the rest of us don't spend much time "in the room". They aren't anything fancy, but not anything NEAR what I would call a dive, unless you have higher tastes than the rest of us. It's just a bed and a shower - what more does one need!

UT, 1, 10, 12, 5, 1/2-1600, Heavy Metal, 8 - 2 cars every minute
all other classes - 2 cars every 30 seconds

-------------------------

so.... we get side-by-side... cool. in-car cams should be mandatory... I got mine! well sort-of :D

Why would they start class 4 behind class 3? Shouldn't be any anyway. Further, if the same 1450 group shows up, we are going to have some fun passing them. Pray for rain. Stock Full ahead of us? arf. Further, it was a 7s that I crashed into at the 250 last year (arf). Most of them aren't that slow - it was a new owner.

anyway - should be fun. At least some dang details are coming out!!

Since the Terribles Herbst family took over primm, They've set up up bleachers & so on for spectators..

None of us are too sure how this race is going to go since it hasn't been run before, at least in this day and age. Like Blanco said, they do have the bleachers for spectators and an infield area that the race usually runs through. Not a bad place to watch. They have run the CORR races there since I was there last. I would assume that the BLM will have the rest of the desert closed to spectators during the race, like they do for the Primm race. The pit areas will probably require a pit pass. Pit passes are usually handed out in limited numbers to the teams.

Buffalo Bills is a pretty decent place, but it is not the Venetian. It is right next to the course, and has a bunch of extras for the non-racer, like the roller coaster, the indoor log ride, a pretty big arcade, a food court and of course the tree bar.

Sadly it seems the CORR boys aren't sharing that portion of the track. They obviously had it blocked off at the battle at primm, which makes the bleachers useless (in fact, they are folded up and tucked away). Bummer.

So did they have anywhere for spectators at BAP? Was it also all closed off like it is for the Primm race? Same group putting on the race, likely the setup will be very much the same.

I parked my coach behind buffalo bills in the helicopter pad area, and stayed there to watch the mini-infield. They kept asking me to move it, but I just acted like I didn't speak english. :D Hard to pull off for a white-guy.

Anyway, I did not make it to the start-finish to see what they had, but we only had a dirt berm to stand on, with banners to keep us from getting hurt.

Hmmm, put this in your think-tank!!

Randy Merritt is now entered with us! Awesome. Randy, however, comes from Mongo - largely involved with KC highlights.

I don't mean to spread rumors, but the FJ is reportedly with KC!

put 2 and 2 together? He sure can't race that monster Ford with us?

good stuff!!! Would love to see the FJ back!!!

I also sent a note to Millen racing (the other FJ) but never heard back.

I will confirm that the FJ is currently owned by a KC individual....and this is not rumor. This came from the new FJ owner himself directly to me. :)

My buddy just called me from the MINT. Sad news for Chuck/BC Broncos. They blew something in the motor on the start line while waiting to take off. The report I got was lots of blue smoke somewhere in the engine compartment, then it died and would barley crank. Hopefully it is something they can fix quick and get out there, but it doesnt look good. Good luck to them and all the RACERS out there today. Only other report I got as that Moss smoked Pike off the start line. (2 starting side by side). My guess is that heaviness of Pikes Ramcharger has a lot to do with that. The FJ and Ken Leavett got off the start line without any issues. That's all the info i got on class 3's. I was supposed to be driving my buddies class 11 off the start line, but had to cancel due to a death in the family. My cousins funeral is today......BUT, I just got an update and they left the start line about 15 minutes ago. Good luck to them as well.

If I get any more info, i will. My buddy, Jeff is the one that built/owns/ and drives the 11 car..... After I got him HOOKED at a SCORE race about 18 months ago...... :) BUT, yes, JACK is with him this year. I was taking Jack out for his FIRST race, driving! Woohoo! Well, he is there, and co-dogging the first lap and then driving the second lap in the 11 car. I'll be at the funeral the rest of the day and off line until this evening /tonight.

If you get this early enough Cam, can you get me one while you're there? If so I'll take an XXL and will pay you for it of course. If they have it in black that would be really cool. Good luck, or how was your race co-dog?

Taking nothing away from Don or his race but Gale (73 YO) was not interested in the drag race, we were told that he would got over to the right. As it turned out we didn't get to verify that as we ran our shortest race to date. DNS, Just before the start line the water temp went to 260. By the time we got it on the trailer it was knocking very load. My guess is it blow a head gasket and the knock is a siezed piston. I will know in a week or so. Not all bad, it could have happened later in the race or Mexico and I got to watch a off road race for the first time in years. Got to meet some of you guys. Also left LV with $135 more than I came with. Not counting engine repair:)
