Here's my first attempt at video editing and posting.
YouTube - #300 Start 2007 Baja 1000
We have nearly 3 hours of video taken with an off the shelf digital video camera duct taped to the light bar. It came out a lot better than anyone expected, however the audio seems really loud. And I am not sure what that horrible clicking noise is that overwhelms just about everything except the engine and wind noise at WOT. It may be the light bar, or some really worn out shock bushings!

The video came out great!! I think the rattling noise is the body coming apart.

awsome video, post more, what kind of camera did you use? any pics of it, how you mount it? love the sound of your engine, those noises are only hearable without the helmet, so no big deal right? :D:D

That was Great Don! http://www.thewebwheeler.com/forums/images/smilies/7.gif
Seems like the Camera was mounted in a great spot, it even got the guy at the starts countdown & all!
& that Camera told you there a noise you need to look into, also very cool.
You would'nt of known about it other wise.
& as far as your wind noise.
Since I have no idea about the Camera & where its Mic is, Its had for me to say how to fix it but heres what the Pros use.
http://www.jeack.com.au/~psbeng/Microphone%20Windshields.htm
I see these things are used at my work all the time.
You could probably use some sort of clother over the Mic or maybe even a sigle layer of duct tape in front of the mic so the wind cant shoot into it..
& I've gotta say I loved seeing you get side ways in the MUD! http://www.thewebwheeler.com/forums/images/smilies/awesome_dude.gif
I am impressed, ride along whit the Mosses in the Bronco, that thing really hauls ash...
Waiting for more vids, thanks Don & Ken.

Good job on the video and the race guys!! We saw you heading down to Mexico not far out of Sacramento we were the ones towing a white Chevy just coming back from the MDR Stoddard 250 on our way back to Canada! Must say your Bronco looked good! Even on the trailer.

The camera was a cheapo $100 camera that one ot the Canadians (Dave) brought just for this trip. He duct taped it to one of the down bars between the driver and passenger near the windshield area. Came out surprisingly good.

Don : the engine sounds great in the video.
Looks like you guys made some really good time from Amarilla to Melton.
What kind of miles per hour can you get through that long Whoops Trail.
We can start to skim at about 35 mph but it just punishes the front pan hard.
So most of the time we have to back way off in that type of section.
The hundred and 23 inch wheelbase buggy we prerun with took them at about 42 . it makes for a long ride not to get on top of them.

I saw you guys heading the other way. We were trying to figure out where you were coming from and who that may be heading up north. Mystery solved.

Dave reported that 24 mph was the magic number that kept the right coil over from contacting the frame. He said that going slower made it worse. That panard bar has run its last race! I remember doing that section at around 19 mph in the past. We think there was some kind of kind of timing error with the BFG data, Dave himself said there was no way they had that kind of average.

And here is the last minute camera installation. No joke, this is it!
I also need to make sure that I credit Dave Crosson for the video and the majority of the pictures. The rest of the pictures are from a variety of sources including Michelle Read and Cam, or as indicated on their watermark.

great video. brings back many memories. thanks for posting. i found myself in the rihgt seat again as you came up on the mini truck that took a while to get aside. i alwaysed loved the time when you get up on their rear bumper and start pushing them faster than they can really run, amazing how fast they'll pull over then...
glad to hear the trip was safe & successfull.
any idea what caused the pinnion failure? 349 had a similar issue, but scott felt is was caused by lack of lube after it leaked out. interesting how the ring gear is still together. was the set up fresh?
straightaxle
12-02-2007, 09:05 PM
The pinion could have failed from a really hard hit of some kind, but I think it was just fatigue. That set was put together in 2002 and had won 24 races, not even sure how many thousands of race miles, some short course races, Vegas to Reno, pre-running, etc. The pinion had been pulled out just prior to this race to replace the o-ring seal, and it looked fine visually at that time. I think we just ran it too long. There's a reason you see guys like Curt LeDuc with stacks of used gears for sale at the swap meets.
Even though it looks like we pushed quite a few of the trucks in the video, that is just the angle of the camera. The only one we pushed was that stock full (with the side mirror already cleaned off), and we had to do him twice, he didn't even feel it the first time!

Moss Bros This was Rod first race even a car and the Co driver Dave is just figuring out that the orange (we call them pink) are course makers and not to follow the locals signs or you may go off course!
The first part of the race look a lot more fun than the end. 8's to 7's in only 70 miles I call that game get out of Dodge. Great action.
Ps Do we move over?

awesome, thanks!! I don't know how I missed these links before!!
It is SO funny to see these, having raced that section a few times... it's crazy how you can watch that and know EXACTLY where you are on the course!!
Seriously, you have to find out from your buddy what kind of camera that is. Everyone in the Cup should be required to have "something". It will be fun to post them after the next race (like if there are 10 of us!).
The noise you are hearing may be largely from the shocks. You don't hear it in the cab much, and not with the helmet. My truck makes the same noise, as did Mike Colemans ranger. I have heard from several sources that the valves in bypass shocks is what that noise is. I have taken everything out of my truck, checked for body panels, etc...and gone running - you hear the same noise the first bump you hit! Sounds like total BS, I know but i bet your truck will sound the exact same if you run it today, with fresh prep and after checking every nut and bolt 10x!
I am watching samsung sport cams on e-bay right now. Ramsey El-W has run these before and liked 'em. They come WITH helmet cams.

On our site utahmountainbiking.com we use a vio sport camera hooked to a sony digital cam-corder using the minidv tapes. It has been really die hard for us. The good thing about this kind of set-up is that it would be fairly easy to replace the tape when it gets full and you can power the whole deal from the car. The vio sport camera will work with any cam-corder that will accept an aux input.
I JUST WISH I COULD USE UTUBE HERE AT WORK! It drives me nuts not to be able to see these vids.

Love the videos! Filter must be down tonite:D
I looked at Target the other day and it looks like there are several camera's like this for around $100, they had a HD 1080i version that was only $149.

I know this thread is older than h3ll, but do you guys run hydraulic bumpstops? If so Im positive that what your hearing is that axle tapping the bump. they get annoying as heck in our truck even with the delrin ends on ours. if yours are aluminum they'll sound just like that. just a thought.
I dont see how a bypass would make THAT much noise, they do make some but if thats the case, you may need to have those rebuilt because thats not really normal.

If your talking to Moss, http://www.thewebwheeler.com/forums/images/smilies/nono.gif they dont run air bumps.

the noise i'm pretty sure they forgot to left the empty cans of tecate's from contingency, haha,
the noise of a bump stop hitting the metal is pretty different, its much like a solid bang,

yeah I was talking to moss. only reason I brought up the air bumps was because thats what ours sound like.
maybe it is empty beer cans... or the full six pack under the co-pilots feet...
anyway, I was curious if they ever found the problem seeing as how this thread is like a year old...
straightaxle
08-27-2008, 05:18 PM
Beer cans! Could be? We usually get most of them out during the prep...
Pretty sure it is the bypasses on the shocks, Angerissues suggested that. I have heard the same noise on some other videos of some high dollar cars. No bump stops on the truck. It's been doing it for 20 or 30,000 race miles.

dude, like I said that is way too loud for a bypass. you should have that checked out.

I disagree. Mike Coleman's long-travel pre-runner makes that noise, my race truck does... and always has. I think the cameras just pick it up particularly well...
We've recently replaced some shock hymes (bosses), whatever the hell they are called... still makes the same noise. :)

that sounds like a solid hitting a solid. not a bypass.

But a bypass valve is a solid hitting a solid....

what?

09-08-2008, 08:24 AM
The bypass valves are steel needles hitting steel seats when they close. Solid on solid. The camera was only a couple of feet from eight of them, and you could hear how sensitive the mic was to the wind noise.
