So this is an old Ashley-Smith Bronco from what I understand. Would be interesting to see some detail pictures of it. Any of you know anything about it?

Doesn't look like it, but compare it, there's a picture in this site's race archives/photos somewhere...

Doesn't look like it to me. Look at the pic that follows... doesn't even look the same in "attitude".

Anyway, I will tell you what I know.

The BFG Rough Riders were a hand-picked bunch of guys from each class... that had fantastic support from From and BFG (and I presume lots of $). What I can say is that Ashley kicked everone's a__ for the most part in Class 4, Dan Smith did the same to class 3, and others, such as Johnson & Johson, Swift, McCachran, all pretty much dominated their respective classes. It was awesome, unless you were the competition.

I brought back some of my analog photos from storage this week, and will try to get some up after I scan them (a pain).

I can speak from first-hand experience - that Bronco was the only one I've ever seen get what we call... "on top of it".. and stay there. Some of you may not know what that refers to... In the whoops, you can either cycle through them (up, down, up, down)... or you can attempt to (in true trophy truck style), only hit the tops. It's the way to go, of course, but with the SWB, we usually can't do it. Small bumps, sure, all day long... but 4-footers, forget it. Dan Smith was my hero during the Rough Rider years. WOW.

Eventually he and Ashley went racing in TT... and had some great races, but eventually fell back significantly. Not sure what they are doing today.

If anyone has more shots of the underneath of that Bronco, it would be well-worth your time to study them (I know I would!!)

One other side note: Dan almost always had a major full beard, which I thought was awesome. Not that I'm going to sleep with him, but given all the other clean-cut guys, it was cool to see a rugged man out there. Most of you know I prefer not to shave unless absolutely necessary!

I was under the impresion that the Rough Riders class 3 Bronco was crushed? But looking at those pictures pretty close that looks pretty damn close to me? look at the beams, steering and shock placement...

I had heard the Bronco had gone to Mexico, but going back and forth on those two pictures, I am undecided. There are some significant differences on things like the bumper, door, windshield bracing, skid plate. Why would you ever change those? Unless the picture SalToy came up with was an early Enduro pic and those changes were made just before it was sold? On the other hand, the front shocks appear to be layed out the same, with the coilover in front, and the bypass behind. Most are the other way.

Dan and Dave have completely stepped away from racing. They had been racing since before they were teenagers, and were just tired of it. I know a guy that went to school with Dan that still hangs out with him and they just do some trail riding.

I saw Dan and Dave at the SEMA Show this fall, but didn't get a chance to talk to them. They still work for Dick Landfield - they started a line of off road stuff called "Baja Champions" (if I recall correctly) and have done some dealership build F150s as well (you see pics or references to them on RDC occasionally). I think the Baja Champions line of products has been bought by another company, the name escapes me at the moment. They were in a booth this year for that company; they also sell ricer products, tuner products, etc. Dave/Dan's stuff is just one piece in their portfolio.

I had heard/read on RDC (it must be true!) that the Enduro Bronco had been crushed too and it did go to Mexico years ago. I guess it makes sense that it's racing in a Baja Sur race if that is indeed the same truck. I think one big item that tells me it is probably the same truck is that the passenger's side beam is in front of the driver's side beam. I've never seen another TTB race truck set up that way. That Dan Smith poster card is from the last year or two that they ran the truck.

One of my all-time favorites too. I have a magazine article from when they first built it but it changed over the years too.

Amazing that the rig finished in the top 10 at the 1000 one year. Imagine that today!

if i recall correctly dave did have some solid competition from the chevy ;) & dan did from the jeep. don't get me wrong, those guys where tough as nails.
hard to tell from those pics if it's the same one.
anyone find any more pics from that race? some rear suspension shots would be a tell all.

I saw those pics over on RDC....that poor truck deserves a lot better than that! Hopefully it will get rebuilt and restored to its former glory.
