What is it? Think of it as a sub-series - a set of races the members choose to race, with its own: points system, sponsors, side purse, and trophies!
Why? To bring together those racers who desire to race in a competetive, more affordable, and FUN environment, where you spend less money to race against more people in your chosen type of vehicle (short wheel-base 4x4).
Is my vehicle legal / What rules are you following? For any individual race, the promotor of that race is the only one who will dictate rules and safety considerations. For example, if a chosen race is a SCORE race, the participants who desire to race must adhere to SCORE standards including the annual roll-cage inspection (at their own cost, of course).
What about "technical" items and rule interpretations? It will be up to the members to dictate what constitues a legal Class 3 Cup car. If, for example, the members agree that a 3-link rear-end is a desirable thing for competition, it will be voted in as "acceptable", regardless of what class we are running and whose race we are racing. If, however, you show up with a car that does NOT conform to the Class 3 Cup rules, we may not allow you to race for points or money. One item that shall be voted upon in the future will potential handicapping for shorter cars. We would like to make sure that early broncos, jeeps, and other wheel-base-challenged cars feel they are competitive against later-model cars. Again, this may be done independent of any single sanctioning-body.
What money are we talking about? The goal will be to raise at least 1,000 dollars from sponsors each race. For example, Class3.com has already agreed to pay 100 dollars to the winner of each race. 9 more business sponsors like this, and we are "in". A major "series" sponsor will be sought as well, for example: "The Coors Original Class 3 Cup". This sponsor will be expected to put forth money for each race and towards the year-end championship (amounts TBD). Further, the members may vote to pay membership dues and put money forward each race. 100% of this money, minus any documented expenses, trophies, and promoting expenses will be returned to the racers!
What races are you racing?
The first race for the Class 3 Cup is the SNORE MINT 400 in Las Vegas, March 27-20.
The second race is currently set to be the BITD Vegas to Reno: August 21-23. This race is subject to approval by the members.
Who are the members / how do I become one? If you ran any Class 3 (or equivilant) race in any recognized series in 2007, you have a one-time opportunity to be a free member, until the first 10 voting positions are gone. Beyond that, if you wish to be a voting member (it is assumed you either have a vehicle or are building one), your membership fee is $100 for the year, and all money goes back into the C3Cup. This buys you 1 voting right. The first 10 members can vote to deny a membership request (if, for example, some rich guy signs up 100 of his friends just to buy voting rights and therefore change the nature of the C3Cup).
The only requirements for membership are: willigness to vote in a timely manner and be recognized publicly as a member of the Class 3 Cup. While we do not intend to use member names for marketing or promotional reasons, this is not designed to be a covert program either. If you aren't comfortable being a member, or current sponsorships may be at risk by racing with other santioning bodies, we understand and hope you will join us at a future time.
Who stands to benefit from this organization?
1) The racers. More people to compete against, less money, rules we want to enforce.
2) The promoters: By bringing more racers out to chosen races, we can spread the Class 3 dollars around, rather than having a few racers here, a few racers there. While we may not be good for their "year-end" points, at least some promoters will get to see us that haven't seen much of us in the past.
3) Sponsors: Any person wishing to promote a product to our members is doing so in a very focused environment.
What are you NOT?
1) Class 3 Cup is not a new sanctioning body. We do not intend on creating new races or attempting to promote new races.
2) We are not designed to be "profitable".
3) We are not qualified to determine if your car is safe and if your roll-cage is well-built. We will not address these concerns. It will be entirely up to the sanctioning body if you are allowed to race. If we choose to race a "pro-class", your car must meet those rules. If we choose to race a safari or pre-runner class, your car must meet those rules.
