So last sunday I decided to cross that line and started stripping the bronco. I haddent planned on doing this until summer but after a few desert trips over the last month and a half things just started to fall apart. I didn't want to waste time on temp fixes to limp me through the season so I just bit the bullet and decided to get an early start on it.

Anyways here it is:

I'm going to pull the body off and clean up the frame and go from there.

Between my schedule and the rain, getting around to doing anything with this has been tough. I did manage to finally get some buddies over to give me a hand lifting the body off and moving the chassis over to the side of the driveway.

So I plan on focusing on the cab before I further strip the chassis.
For the cab I'm going through and cutting out all of the internal sheet metal so I can get the cage tucked in there nice and tight. Then it's getting painted. There will be more to get chopped (core support, quarter panels, wheel wells and most of the rear floor pan) but not until I get a better idea of where every things going and how it'll all get replaced.

Alright it's been a few weeks so I wanted to kind of check in. The weather and work kind of slowed me down but a couple weeks ago my aunt throw a real wrench in the works and forced me to move the project out of my grandmothers driveway. Luckily my grandmother is allowing me to continue building the vehicle at her house but i had to move it to the back yard which required demoing a block wall and building a new gated fence back there.
So while it's not a direct update on the build it's very necisary one to continue it:p

Original block wall:

And the new work area:

I'm going to add some out door recepticles and some perminate lighting too. Should be pretty nice.

The first thing I thought of... but I don't think I said it (when I saw your original photos of the project... was "man, your neighbors must hate you!!". All that cutting, grinding, power tools, air compressors!! oh man!!

I had a huge garage (pre-divorce) and the wife slept in the very very back room, yet sometimes she would come out at 1:00 and say "ok, that's IT!".

You have a pretty darn nice g-ma!!! So do I, I just don't build my car there, but I bet she would let me if I needed to!

Keep up the good work!!!

Yeah she's great! I lived with my grandparents for a good part of my life so she's been used to seeing me working on that thing here I guess. Just about all the neighbors know us too so they didn't care about that thing being built out there. I wouldn't start work on it before 10am and always finished by 5 pm so I tried to keep it as little a neusense as possible . Also theres a guy down the street that rebuilds classics. He currently has two in his drive way covered with tarps and two more in the street, also covered with tarps so i'm not alone in this kind of thing i guess.

Besides as busy as it get for me it's kind of nice to cruise over to grandmas get a free meal work on the truck and visit for a bit. I know she enjoys the company - even if I spend half the time out side working on the thing.

The weather was sketchy with some rain on the way but it held out long enough for me to get the tranny, t-case, tank and most of the front end out of there.

Well, if you get rid of the OHV, I know someone that is still running one. There was a brand new SOHC in the crate at the swap meet last week, I have no idea what they get for one of those. The 5.0 is hands down the best choice for reliability, cost and HP, all other conditions being equal, but there will be some packaging issues. They are a little bigger and the BII is not big to begin with.

CR23 Engine & Engine Displacement
"Engine must be of the same manufacturer basic design & type & have the same number of cylinders as the one installed by the manufacturer."

Is that not the case? I would consider a 5.0 if I can get away with it though.
Of course I may just stick with the OHV. It cost me a lot to swap that in there way back when and it's running top notch and has less than 40,000 miles on it. It's just I know there are better options out there and if I'm going to make the swap in the future I might as well just do it now as now is the time to do it.

Well i've been doing a little here and there over the last few weeks. I guess i finally finished the tear down portion.
I don't have a cherry picker, engine stand or even really the space to store the motor so I'm just going to leave it bolted to the chassis. Everything else is off. Stripped the fuel lines, break lines, wiring and all unnecessary brackets from the frame.
We got the driver side cleaned up real good and went ahead and put a coat of primer on it (after pic was taken).

I think i'm going to focus on getting the drive train components all cleaned up and de-greased while I wait on getting some money together for the plating to box the frame. I'm still in need of a new DD too so my money's kind of stretched thin for the the time being.

Other methods for removing rivets:

drill
drill first then grind
cold chisel
torch, then grind

None are fun! Some leave more damage to bracket than others

I ended up grinding off the head and then drilling a small hole through them and finally knocked them out with a small sledge. I suppose it wouldn't have been too bad if it wasn't for how many there were. I think the final count came to 50. Plus there were 8 on each side that were really hard to get too.

I got a question for you guys.

I spent the afternoon cleaning the gunk off of the transmission and t-case today. In the process I drained the fluid from the both of them. Is it going to be an issue having them sit for so long with out fluid in there? I'm kind of thinking some sort of oxidation may take place with out any.

Like wise I noticed I still have a bunch of coolent in the motor. Should I go ahead and blow that all out or what?

Blanco
05-11-2008, 01:59 PM
Everything will still have a coat of oil on it so, you should be fine as far as oxidation.
But the seals I wonder about?

How long do you figure there gonna sit dry?

It's hard to say but I doubt i'll even be able to fire it up until next spring some time. I finally picked up my new daily driver today so I have between now and august to put as much money and progress into it before it slows down again for the holidays.

Rivets are nothing if you have access to a large slide hammer..... as I found out all it takes is grinding off the rivet head with an angle grinder then borrowing a 20lb slide hammer from my work (used for doing compaction testing on soils.. thats another topic) and it took no more than two slides of the hammer and they came right out. Too easy if you can get one of these tools. My brother laughed when he saw me bring out this large ass slide hammer, but then he quickly asked to borrow it a day later.

Thanks for the offer James. Wish you were closer too.

As far as the wheel dollies, they are totally worth the $150.00 per pair I paid at Harbor Freight. They are pretty awesome units. I had four of the cheaper units but ended up blowing the wheels on one of the dollies but Harbor Freight gave me credit on them so I upgraded. The nice thing about the hydralic units is that you just have to open up the dolly to fit around the wheel, step on the hydralic pedal, it closes up and lifts the wheel/vehicle off the ground.

Keep the photos coming. Motivating me to keep working on my rig.

My new dd!
I plan on doing some mild things for it as time and money permits. It'll be getting a few hand me downs from the bronco and should do well as a support vehicle of sorts I guess.

It's a 95 with 4x4 and has 145,000 on it with a rebuilt tranny at 100. Motor feels good so hopefully I can get a few more years out of it before needing an overhaul. The interiors clean and exteriors not bad either.

Nope. It's got the 4.0 ohv. I was really trying to find something with the sohc but i couldn't find one with 4x4 and 4 door.

Aside from being my dd I plan to use it to tow a pop up tent trailer when I go out. After the Pigs complete i'll address my towing needs with some year f-250. The plan is my wife can tow the pop up out with the explorer while I tow the pig out with the f250.

It was pretty tempting at the prices people seem to be letting them go for now a days. Aside from the poor gas milage though they only came in 2wd or an AWD configuration and I heard the AWD isn't that great an option - underperforming in the dirt and chewing through tires on the street.

I really, really wanted the SOHC but I couldn't find any with 4 door and 4x4.:(

Someday when you're an employer doing interviews, you will appreciate those that have "paid their dues" and toughed it out. When it's all over, you will realize that all engineering did was teach you how to sit back and RTFM. (Read The F'n Manual) Get some business management classes because your engineering curriculum will not give you enough. The typical step up for an engineer is a management position, and engineers are usually poorly prepared for that.

Ok so hears a little story and an update: I had let my mother-in-laws boyfriend barrow my welder way back before I even started tearing down my bronco. He said he only needed it for a couple weeks but then he kept claiming to need it longer and since I really didn't need it at the time I didn't push the issue. However now i'm at a point where I needed it back and naturally the guy wasn't so quick to answer his phone:rolleyes: I finally did get through to him though and told him I'm going to head over to pick up my welder (I specifically used "my welder" and not "the welder" as I had a feeling he was getting pretty attached to it;)) and he agrees. Then I get there... He's got it on some goofy cart and one of the gauges is kind of busted up with the lens being held on by tape!:( Plus it's filthy as hell! When he barrowed it, it looked bran new!
Despite that though the thing that pissed me off the most was while loading it up I asked if he wanted to hang on to the cart and he has the audacity to call my welder the "community welder" as in "well I figure since it's the community welder then the stand should just stay with it":mad::mad:
Community welder my ass - I don't recall him chipping in on it!!! Oh and just before I'm about to drive away he even asked me when he could get it back. WTF? The whole time I was just trying to be nice and laugh off his non sense but it'll be a long while before he get near any of my tools again.
Geez that really peeved me.

But anyways. I got my welder back but I still have to hook up a dedicated circuit for it at my gmas house as for some odd reason my grandpa had the original 220 circuit removed:confused:
I'm also going to try to get some plating so I can start boxing the frame.

Welder stories, AAAARRRRGGGHHHH. A guy that used to live across the street used to be a carpenter would occasionally borrow my mig welder. My crew knows that I refer to him as my "hillbilly neighbor". I would borrow a ladder from him or let him build a gate for me, so it was no big deal. Then he starts a "side business" building bumper mounted vise mounts, with my welder of course. So we are in Mexico for a race, and I get a call on my cell from HBN, and he says "Hey, Becky and I just split up, she kicked me out, and there's a bottle of gas over at the house". I go pick the thing up when I get back from Mexico and find out he had used one of my business cards to rent a big bottle of mig gas from the welding supply store. He had paid for the gas, but the monthly rental was charging to the company! I grabbed the bottle and paid the rent for another month while we burned off the gas on some projects. He would carpenter all day, and then weld until 3 or 4 in the morning for days at a time, you think there was some chemical assistance there?

Hey James,

Haven't you heard, "No good deed goes unpunished"?

By the way, when can I come by for OUR welder????? Just kidding bro. I've been in that same situation with gear. Unfortunately sometimes people only take real care of gear they actually paid for. I make it a practice to return any thing I borrow in the same or better condition then I received it. Even when I borrowed my brother's truck to tow my Bronco, I washed it inside and out and filled the tank up as a thank you.

Yeah serious there's an etiquette to borrowing things and he seems to lack it. It doesn't help that i'm way to damn passive about these kind of things... Or maybe i'm just a real big softy:p

So anyways I'm trying to plan ahead for how to re-route the fuel lines, break lines and electrical with out leaving it all too exposed. If anybody has any pics of what they did i'd appreciate it. Also any ideas as to how to secure them to the frame.

Currently I was thinking about just keeping all of the electrical inside the cab and then welding a small strip of plating (1/16 x 1 1/2" wide) down the length of frame to offer some protection but I don't know...

pigracing
06-26-2008, 08:11 PM
Oh and I forgot for the breaks I was thinking about running a hard line through the boxed frame with the fittings secured at each end.

straightaxle
06-27-2008, 07:26 AM
We have routed the brake and fuel lines where the factory did, inside the frame rails. We did not plate the frame rails, and very, very few race trucks are plated. The stress of the shock and spring mounts are typically handled by the cage which is spread to numerous location points on the stock frame. The primary points on the frame that take a beating are the forward leaf spring hangers on the rear springs and the radius arm brackets. What seems to help is putting large doubler plates inside the frame and bolting through the frame to them. We have had damage to brake and fuel lines as well as battery cables (since the batteries are in the rear) when the u-joint fails at the rear pinion. The shaft (and once even half the pinion shaft as well) slings around and whacks all kinds of stuff. There's a loop on the front, but without a cage like the monster trucks use, it is impossible to contain them at the pinion end. Suprisingly none of the impacts ever severed any of the components or shorted anything out. Plating in this area would probably help this situation.

It was a late start but I plugged just about every hole on the driver side. I should be able to do the other side and then go back over them with the grinder to get them all nice and flush.
Hopefully I can get the plating this week so I can start cutting it next week end and maybe even start boxing it all in.

Yeah I was working on it today for a little bit actually.

As it stands today all of the smaller holes through out the frame have been welded up with all of them grinded down smooth on the driver side and i'm about half done on the passenger side. I'll probably pick up some plating this week to use to fill some of the larger holes.

I'm doing something a little bit different than most and i'm not sure if it's a good idea or just a crazy one but you guys will have to wait until it's done before I show case it in it's final grandeur ;)

Yeah those rivets are no fun but atleast you got your kid and nephews help:p. I was actually surprised at how well the good ol' wire wheel worked on mine.

I would be concerned about what all that heat is doing to the frame material. I'd be much more inclined to say you're doing more to weaken the frame than strengthen it, but hopefully you'll prove me wrong.

Keep us posted on your progress.

Yeah I was concerned and still am but I talked to hand full of guys who boxed and/or hard faces their frames with out ever having any cracking issues so we'll see. Now of course i'm adding a whole lot more heat to it but for the sake of future projects at least I'll have a better idea of how much welding a ford frame can take.:p

Also a secondary goal of doing this was to ensure no dirt or mud or other crap can get in there and weigh down or rot out the inside of the frame.

The amount of crap that will get into a fully boxed frame would blow your mind.

the frame on our tacoma was completely boxed from the factory, we cut the inside of the rail enough to sandblast everything, and then plated over everything with 3/16''. after one of our upper links broke, I had to cut part of the plating out, and there was about a solid inch of dried mud and goo in that thing. that frame is completely sealed. so I have no idea how it got in there but somehow it found a way...

CopyKat
07-10-2008, 11:51 AM
If you want to keep it sealed then use expanding foam and fill the void. Dirt/Mud can't get in then. What's the killer is the dust that sits in the frame and the moisture left but the changing air inside. it'll rust from the inside out.

When I patched the floor of my truck every open tube/crossmember I could find got expanding foam. I believe I even did the A pillars;)

yeah, that could work depending on the foam you actually use. alot of foams actually disintegrate if they come in contact with moisture. check out home depot, they have an expanding foam that is water and UV resistant and lasts a lifetime, I use that stuff on almost all the jobs I get called out too.

This is how I left the drivers side the day after the last update. I still haven't had a chance to get the metal to fill the larger holes or even start plating the other side but in the mean time i've been slowly working on the passenger side.

I don't know if it's the gas prices or what but it's just been an uphill battle trying to pull together any extra money to put towards this, so things are progressing a lot slower than I had planed:(

Woo-hoo I got me a bender! It's a jd2 model 3 used for $250. I was going to pick up the metal to finally start boxing the frame but I figured it would be better to go ahead and jump on this bender and save some money. I probably wont have much to update over the next month as my moneys going to be stretched thin over other obligations that annoyingly keep popping up:mad:

Put up a picture of the bender when you get a chance. What is the price for a new bender vs. your used bender?

3amigo
07-28-2008, 05:30 AM
You would be close to $500 on that bender with a single die. If he gets one or more dies with it, it is a great deal.
I have the same bender, and they work very well.

pigracing
07-28-2008, 04:46 PM
Brand new from their site - $295 plus $40 for the extension handle and another $135 for the stand. Figure $30 for tax and maybe $50 for shipping and handling and I figure your looking at $550 brand new.
Although if I were to buy new i would have just purchased the bender and built my own stand and handle but I imagine that would still put me close to $400.

I didn't get any dies with it by the way.

How do you keep the air in her at the paintball park? Everytime I shoot my date, the paintball rips through the latex and she leaks. Then... I look silly trying to blow her up again (puff puff puff). Plus, the air intake is in a bad-looking spot (should an "outlet" if you know what I mean). My friends all laugh at me and it hurts my feelings. Seeking advice in Ventura:

Still need dies and to mount it but i'm not to the point of needing either right now so no biggie.

I got tired of dealing with my old crappy mask so I swung by air-gas and upgraded:
http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff152/3pod151/Other/Pig%20Racing/000_0439.jpg

I know it's a crappy pic but if anybody can and is willing to critique that there weld I'm open to learn how i can improve it. I know i need to get better at making single passes as you can tell i had to stop a few times
http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff152/3pod151/Other/Pig%20Racing/000_0438.jpg

But the frame is completely plugged from the outside except for the remaining rivets that will be removed as I replace the various cross members.
http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff152/3pod151/Other/Pig%20Racing/000_0440.jpg

Unfortunately the metal supply shops closed before I could get there so I wasn't able to get the plating to actually start boxing it but oh well.

I also got a few other goodies but i'm saving them for later.

Turn up the heat. The welds look a little cold. Looking good otherwise.

What's your plan for body mounts? Solid? and rear bumper I noticed that you filled the holes. You welding that to the frame?

Ckrue689
08-30-2008, 08:05 PM
A- turn up the heat
B- Slow down
C- put more heat on the thicker metal, let it puddle and then bring it up.

I typically go with zig-zag /\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\. the curly cue thing doesnt work that well, it tends to make the bead build up too much.

practice practice practice. go by a shop and just ask if you can have their scrap because you want to practice welding. most places are cool enough about it they'll give you some.

What kind of welder are you using?? post a pic up.

Yeah I was living out in Poway for a bit across the street from someone who was very much involved with the mcmillins. I'm not sure who it was as we never really met each other but they had a couple mcmillin trailers, a chase truck, some times a little semi and on a few occasions even their TT parked in front of their driveway.
