Here are some photos of our future Class 3 entrant. John built this Bronco over a span of many years. He built it mostly just for fun but he tried to stay fairly true to class 3 rules so we've got a great platform to start with. We've got a lot of work to do on it before its ready to race but we hope to get it ready before it gets too late in the season. We need to go through the rule book and make sure its compliant, there may be a few things we'll have to re-work. Major items we want to get done is to re-wire it, re-do some of the tubework, swap the front end out for high pinion, get some good fluid coolers on it and outfit it for racing with communications, tools, spares, lighting, etc. We'll be putting together a team to help get this thing to the green flag, if you want to be a part of it or help out in any way just let us know. Here are the pix:

If your front suspension is shown in full droop, then the up travel appears to be 12-14 inches. I measured by marking it against the front brake rotor, and assumed that you are running a production 11-12" rotor.

Yeah its got a ton of travel. In fact that's one of the things we have to deal with before its race ready. Front driveshafts don't want to live very long in it, so we're going to a high pinion front end.

As much as we'd love to be a part of that historical event, the Mint looks doubtful at this point. Just too much to do to the racer before its ready, and trying to fit it all in with running a business and all of the other events and obligations. We're not sure yet what race date we're going to shoot for. Once we get a core team in place we'll be taking a good hard look at what we've got, where we are and where we need to be, then putting a plan in place with a realistic due date we believe we can meet.

That said, we will most likely be at the Mint helping with other teams.

No Tom this is John's Bronco. My old trail rig is an embarrassment at this point, its stripped down to the frame and tub waiting for some love.

Nope not related. We're the same age though, both overweight whiteboys with goaties so I guess there's a resemblance.

Ha!! That's hilarious Dusty. Glad to see you guys are dusting off that rig. It needs to be "rode hard". This is looking to be a great year for Class 3.

Was the high pinion D44 an option on the EB's?

Nope. 71-77 had low pinion D44. F150's had hi pinions and the Bronco got the full width high pinion when it went full size in 78.

How much wider is the front axle on a 78-79 vs the EB?

How much wider is the front axle on a 78-79 vs the EB?

Approximately 3" per side but you only need to shorten the long side to get it to EB width with the pumpkin in the right place.

What would you do about the track bar? Custom piece? I ask because I have a narrowed housing off of a 78/79 I was planing to use on my '69. If it starts to get too expensive I'll just keep looking for a housing from an EB. This way I figure it would be less $$$ using all stock parts.

Dusty

We'll have to fab a new track bar and track bar mounts. But that's not such a big deal once you're already into such extensive mods.

Hey Gabe, I'll try to have those numbers to you today.

Hey TheHeat, please send me an email offline to dusty@wcb4x4.com and we'll talk about it. Probably shouldn't commercialize here on the site. Thanks,
