Next Race: TECATE SCORE SAN FELIPE 250 / MARCH 14 & 15
OPEN LETTER TO RACING COMMUNITY:
February 15, 2008
I just returned from finalizing the official race course for March’s 22nd Annual Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250, and I am pleased to inform you that we have 232 miles of what the sunny side of Baja is all about---moguls, more moguls, sand, silt, canyons, washes, rocks, and a few graded roads!

The race starts at the famed San Felipe Arches and proceeds northwest towards the Zoo Road. San Felipe’s new delegate, Hazael Sierra Castillo, is blading the area approaching the Zoo Road Crossing, which will make it a safer approach than in the past. The area will be fenced and patrolled so that the spectators can watch the action but not put themselves in way of the action. From the Zoo Road Crossing, we will proceed North towards Three Poles, then west into the wash paralleling Highway 3 passing Borrego to the most westerly point, San Matias Pass. At San Matias Pass, we will head back east paralleling the north end of Diablo Dry Lake and hook up to our traditionally high-speed road and silt beds to the Intersection at Morelia Junction. At the Junction, we head south on the graded road to the top of Matomi Wash, then turn South East into Matomi Wash (what a beautiful canyon---the rains have covered many of the rocks where flowers are blooming). We will turn North out of Matomi, approximately 12 miles west of the Puertecitos Road, hooking up to Azufre Pass. At Azufre Pass, we turn left (west) following the wash to the Arroyo Parral, and then turn right (north) into the wash. Then, turn right again at Huatamote Wash (which we have mistakenly called Chanate Wash in the past) and follow the wash in a north-easterly direction towards the back of the San Felipe Airport and onto the Finish Line adjacent to the Tecate Building at the south end of the Arches.

I really believe you are going to enjoy this course! It includes everything that makes SCORE desert racing so challenging and fun. My trip took me through Tijuana, Ensenada, San Felipe, and Mexicali. I can personally report that there is a noticeable increase in security along the roads. My compliments to the new government for their conscientious effort in addressing the situation.
Hopefully, this letter will tweak your “BajaMotion” and you will join me on the sunny side of the peninsula.

On another note, please bear with us as we have been experiencing some unique problems with our website. Although we have been working feverishly to resolve the issues; unfortunately, they have gotten the best of us. We are working on a new, more informative, updated site. Sorry for the inconvenience but, for now, all information will be on the Homepage in text format. Do not use the individual photo Race Event text icons at the top of the home page.

Sincerely,

Sal Fish

Round 2, SCORE Desert Series

Sohren in SCORE Trophy-Truck, Bell in Motorcycles draw
First starting slots for 22nd Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250

Billy Gasper receives first Class 1 start as over 250 entries
Expected in popular March 15 desert race in Mexico

LOS ANGELES—Arizona veteran desert racer Pete Sohren and Southern California’s rising star Robby Bell received the pole positions for four-wheel and two-wheel vehicles in the computerized drawing for starting positions held Friday for the upcoming 22nd Annual Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250. Sohren races in the featured SCORE Trophy-Truck division while Bell competes in Class 22 for open motorcycles.
Round 2 of the 2008 SCORE Desert Series will be held March 15 in Mexico’s quaint and picturesque fishing village of San Felipe, located on the East side of the Baja California peninsula along the azure waters of the tranquil Sea of Cortez. SCORE is returning to San Felipe for the first time since 2006 as last year’s race was moved to Ensenada just 10 days before the start because of political issues in San Felipe out of SCORE’s control.
With over 250 entries expected to compete in 28 Pro and 6 Sportsman classes in the 232 mile race, the green flag will drop at 6 a.m. on Saturday, March 15, for the motorcycle and ATV classes, followed by the car and truck classes at approximately 9:30 a.m. The start line for the race will once again be the landmark San Felipe Arches on Highway 5 on the outskirts of San Felipe. The race will finish just south of the Arches, directly behind the Tecate building.
The official course map is posted on www.score-international.com.
Following January’s season-opening SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge, America’s Foremost Desert Racing Series will visit Mexico for the first of three races in 2008.
Drawing the first starting slot for the unlimited Class 1 open-wheel desert race cars was defending season point champion Billy Gasper, Chino Hills, Calif. Riding the first ATV off the line will be defending SCORE Overall ATV and Class 25 point Champion Danny Prather, Ramona, Calif.
Sohren, 43, of Glendale, Ariz., is a veteran SCORE desert racer who has won Class 5 (unlimited VW Baja Bugs) twice in this race (1997 and 2001). He now drives the No. 2 Ford F-150 SCORE Trophy-Truck, finishing eighth in season points last year after a solid fourth-place finish in the 40th Tecate SCORE Baja 1000.
With 18 entries so far in the class for 800 horsepower, unlimited production trucks, Sohren will lead a strong field in SCORE Trophy-Truck that features many of the world’s top desert racers.
Bell, 22, of Sun City, Calif., who has won the overall and Class 22 title in this race the past two years will team with legendary SCORE Baja racer Johnny Campbell, 37, San Clemente, Calif., riding the No. 1x Johnny Campbell Racing Honda CRF450X.
In Friday’s computerized drawing, SCORE Trophy-Truck and Class 1 had the most entries with 18 each, followed SCORE Lite with 15, Class 1-2/1600 with 14 and Class 5/1600 with 10. Late registration will be accepted up until race morning and as many as 60 additional entries are expected.
Among the Pro Motorcycle classes, Class 22 (open) had 11 entries and Class 30 (riders 30 years and over) had nine entries. Leading the Pro ATV entries in the drawing was Class 25 (open) with 11.
Gasper, 40, who won last season’s SCORE Class 1 season point championship with his brother Dave, will drive the No. 100 Chevy-powered Porter open-wheel desert race car in Class 1.
Helping Prather, 27, lead the ATV entries off the line in a Honda TRX450R will be riding mates Mike Cafro, 37, Bonsall, Calif., Levi Marana, 22, Hemet, Calif., and Chad Prull, 32, Laveen, Ariz.
Besides Sohren, the SCORE Trophy-Truck field includes defending race and 2007 SCORE Overall and SCORE Trophy-Truck point champion Mark Post, Laguna Beach, Calif./Rob MacCachren, Las Vegas, in the No. 1 Rivera Racing Ford F-150 and 2006 overall and SCORE Trophy-Truck race winner Garron Cadiente, Mesa, Ariz., in the No. 38 G&R Racing Ford F-150.
Post also won the overall in this race two times with veteran Jerry Whelchel, Portola Hills, Calif. as his second driver (1998 in Class 1 and 2004 in SCORE Trophy-Truck) while MacCachren won the overall in this race in 2004 as the second driver from Gus Vildosola, Mexicali, Mexico.
“This is a really cool deal to be the first vehicle to start the race,” said the affable Sohren, known for his long “mullet” hair and quick tongue as much as his driving skills. “I’ve been in the back of the pack so much, I’m not sure I will be able to handle all the clean air in front of me. I love racing in Mexico and the Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 is an awesome race and I’m glad we’re able to return there this year. I’m so pumped right now I hope I still have some adrenalin left on race day.”
Among the other racers to draw first starting position in their respective classes were: Steve Mamer, Holtville, Calif. (SCORE Lite, Raceco-VW), Brent Parkhouse, Long Beach, Calif. (Class 1-2/1600, Mirage-VW), and Pedro Athie, Ensenada, Mexico (Class 5/1600, VW Baja Bug).
Pre-race festivities at the Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 will include the colorful SCORE Midway and tech inspection on the Malecon beachfront in downtown alongside the azure waters of the Sea of Cortez from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Friday (March 14).
At 10 a.m. on Sunday (March 16), the awards celebration will be held in front of The Beachcomber Night Club on the Malecon.
The 2008 SCORE Desert Series also includes the chase for the $20,000 Volkswagen Point Leader Bonus and the run for the Toyota Milestone Awards.
Current SCORE official annual sponsors are: BFGoodrich Tires-official tire, Sunoco Race Fuels/Bryant Petroleum-official fuel supplier, Bilstein-official shock, Volkswagen-official vehicle, Instant Mexico Auto Insurance-official Mexican auto insurance, Slime-official tire sealant, Red Bull--official energy drink and Bosch Power Tools-official power tool. Associate sponsors are: Tecate Beer, Coca-Cola of Mexico, Las Vegas Events, Terrible Herbst Inc., Blue C Enthusiast Advertising, Kartek Off-Road, American Suzuki, SignPros, P.C.I. SCORE International inks International Racing Consultants
Agreement starting at 22nd Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250

Led by veteran racer Steve Myers, IRC tracking devices
To be mandatory for all vehicles in SCORE Desert Series

LOS ANGELES—SCORE International, motorsports producers and sanctioning body for the world-renown SCORE Desert Series, have announced an exclusive agreement with International Racing Consultants to provide the special vehicle tracking devices used at the SCORE races in the U.S. and Mexico.
Starting with next month’s 22nd Annual Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 desert race in Baja California, Mexico, IRC equipment will be mandatory for the entire field of cars, trucks, motorcycles and ATVs. Used primarily to monitor race progress while tracking the route and speed of each vehicle in the race, IRC also provides a website (www.racetheworld.net) where teams and the general public will be able to view the location of vehicles with updates at two-minute intervals throughout the entire time limit of each race.
“The time is right for SCORE and IRC to link up in this official capacity which will add an exciting new element to the SCORE Desert Series,” said Sal Fish, President/CEO of the Los Angeles-based SCORE International, which has started its 35th season. “The technology available to enhance the overall execution of our races is unbelievable and IRC is certainly on the cutting edge of all the advancements that continue to be made in these very important areas for our sport. Another very attractive thing to SCORE when finalizing this agreement is the fact that IRC President Steve Myers is a desert racer who clearly understands both the racing and technology sides of our sport.”
Based in Tustin, Calif., IRC is in its fourth year of providing equipment and technological support for these special areas not only in the desert, but also in water and air sports as well.
IRC is a specialist in advanced satellite communications in land, air and sea sports as well as commercial and personal logistics with a team of very experienced professionals.
SCORE car, truck and ATV classes will be required to have the IriTrack unit while motorcycles will need to have the smaller e-Track unit mounted on their vehicles.
“IRC is very excited about its new partnership with SCORE International, which is one of the world’s foremost desert racing organizations,” said Steve Myers, IRC President who is a second-generation desert racer who was the 2004 SCORE Class 10 season point champion. “We began our initial discussions with SCORE when we started nearly four years ago and have had a strong presence at SCORE races since then with many racers leasing our system on an optional basis. As a matter of fact, in last year’s massive 40th anniversary of the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000, nearly 45 percent of the 424 starters were equipped with IRC technology devices.”
“IRC is committed to technology development and we look forward to working with SCORE and exploring the unlimited potential of what our system and our software technologies have to offer.”
Myers said he first tested the IriTrack system when competing in the Dakar Rally in Europe and Africa in January of 2005.
“We were one of about 150 teams that ran out of fuel during one stage and were stranded off course for about 18 hours,” Myers remembered. “The IriTrack Control Center started talking to us and told us that they knew where we were and that help was on the way. That episode made my commitment to use IriTrack even greater and finished the stage for founding IRC.”
Order forms for all of the IRC equipment is available online at the IRC website (www.racetheworld.net). The order forms break down all of the required equipment needed to run in the race vehicles at SCORE races. Technical personnel are also available to answer questions at 714.544.0668.
With over 250 entries expected to compete in 28 Pro and 6 Sportsman classes in the 232 mile Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250, the green flag will drop at 6 a.m. on Saturday, March 15, for the motorcycle and ATV classes, followed by the car and truck classes at approximately 9:30 a.m. The start line for the race will once again be the landmark San Felipe Arches on Highway 5 on the outskirts of San Felipe. The race will finish just south of the Arches, directly behind the Tecate building.
Current SCORE official annual sponsors are: BFGoodrich Tires-official tire, Sunoco Race Fuels/Bryant Petroleum-official fuel supplier, Bilstein-official shock, Volkswagen-official vehicle, Instant Mexico Auto Insurance-official Mexican auto insurance, Slime-official tire sealant, Red Bull--official energy drink and Bosch Power Tools-official power tool. yes yes,we're crying,. haha, $650 dlls more. damn.. that sucks. sorry.

And HELL YES... I'd be crying too. THIS close to the race? Who sets aside an extra 1/2 the entry for something like THAT to come up only a few weeks out??

I feel your pain, brothers. I do.

And now I'm editing my own post - after thinking of this. Sal does this crap like he does NOT care. I like the guy, I admire him, but after the Baja 500 in '05... when we got stuck behind course roadblocks for over 4 hours (they extended the time-limit for two hours). EVERYONE in class 3, stone-stock full, stone-stock mini, class 11, and class 9 (except for one) - ALL of us were given DNF, MANY who were running very strong! He stood up there the next day by the pool, and said: "We had a great race"... blah blah blah - "it's Baja, there is always a way to get around". Total bull****.

I put this IRC right up there with the annual inspection bull****. Bill Savage told me once: "What... it's only 250 bucks.. does that matter?"

Hell yes, this stuff matters. I know IRC is great, but give the racers more time. I feel for ya Chupa.

Round 2, SCORE Desert Series

Post/MacCachren looking to repeat as pre-running starts
Saturday for 22nd Annual Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250

Over 250 cars, trucks, motorcycles, ATVs from 20 States, six countries expected in March 15 desert race in Mexico

LOS ANGELES—As pre-running starts Saturday for next month’s 22nd Annual Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250, veteran desert racers Mark Post and Rob MacCachren are finalizing plans to repeat as overall and SCORE Trophy-Truck winners of the popular spring race. With nine class wins between them in this event, Post, Laguna Beach, Calif. and MacCachren, Las Vegas, are the defending SCORE Trophy-Truck and SCORE Overall season point champions in the No. 1 Riviera Racing Ford F-150.
Round 2 of the 2008 SCORE Desert Series will be held March 15 in Mexico’s quaint and picturesque fishing village of San Felipe, located on the East side of the Baja California peninsula along the azure waters of the tranquil Sea of Cortez.
With over 250 entries from 20 states and six countries expected to compete in 28 Pro and 6 Sportsman classes in the 232-mile race, the green flag will drop at 6 a.m. on Saturday, March 15, for the motorcycle and ATV classes, followed three hours later by the car and truck classes at approximately 10 a.m. The start line for the race will once again be the landmark San Felipe Arches on Highway 5 on the outskirts of San Felipe. The race will finish just south of the Arches, directly behind the Tecate building. One vehicle will start every 30 seconds in the elapsed-time race, with a 10-hour time limit to become an official finisher.
Following January’s season-opening SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge, America’s Foremost Desert Racing Series will visit Mexico for the first of three races in 2008.
“I just recently returned from finalizing the race course for the Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250, and I'm pleased to report that we have 232 miles of what the sunny side of Baja is all about…moguls, more moguls, sand, silt, canyons, washes, rocks, and a few graded roads,” said Sal Fish, SCORE CEO/President since soon after it started in 1973.
“After the start, the race will proceed north towards Zoo Road. San Felipe’s new delegate, Hazael Sierra Castillo, is blading the area approaching the Zoo Road Crossing, which will make it a safer approach than in the past. The area will be fenced and patrolled so that spectators can watch the action but not put themselves in way of the action. I really believe racers are really going to enjoy this course. It has everything that makes SCORE desert racing in Baja so challenging and memorable.”
This will be the first time that SCORE will run through the majestic Matomi Wash at the start of the race instead of near the end. After Matomi, the challenging course will run through two more of the infamous Baja washes—Azufre and Huatomote before heading back Northwest for the final 19.6 miles to the finish line.
"Desert racing is like nothing else in life,” said Post, 50, a top Southern California entrepreneur.
“Sometimes you face incredibly difficult challenges that test you both physically and mentally and put you on the edge…there is nothing better. Heading to San Felipe with the opportunity to put the No. 1 SCORE Trophy-Truck in victory circle is always exciting. Of course, this is one of my favorite races of all time and we’ve been very good here in the past. SCORE racing in Baja is something very special to Riviera Racing and this year I am very proud to introduce the third generation of Riviera Racing drivers. My son, Max (Post, 17), will debut his Riviera Racing Protruck and we are excited to turn him loose.”
Arizona veteran desert racer Pete Sohren and Southern California’s rising star Robby Bell received the pole positions for four-wheel and two-wheel vehicles in the computerized drawing for starting positions. Sohren races in the featured SCORE Trophy-Truck division while Bell competes in Class 22 for open motorcycles.
Drawing the first starting slot for the unlimited Class 1 open-wheel desert race cars is defending season point champion Billy Gasper, Chino Hills, Calif.
With 20 entries so far in the class for 800 horsepower, unlimited production trucks, Sohren will lead a strong field in SCORE Trophy-Truck that features many of the world’s top desert racers.
To date, Class 1-2/600 has the most entries with 25 followed by SCORE Trophy-Truck with 20, Class 1 with 19, SCORE Lite with 15 and Class 5/1600 with 10. Late registration will be accepted up until race morning and as many as 50 additional late entries are still expected.
Among the Pro Motorcycle classes, Class 22 (open) has 12 entries and Class 30 (riders 30 years and over) has eight. Leading the Pro ATV entries so far is Class 25 (open) with 12.
Besides Sohren and Post/MacCachren, the SCORE Trophy-Truck field also includes 2006 overall and SCORE Trophy-Truck race winner Garron Cadiente, Mesa, Ariz., in the No. 38 GNR Racing Ford F-150.
Post also won the overall in this race two times with veteran Jerry Whelchel, Portola Hills, Calif. as his second driver (1998 in Class 1 and 2004 in SCORE Trophy-Truck) while MacCachren, 42, with six class wins in San Felipe, also won the overall in this race in 2003 as the second driver for Gus Vildosola, Mexicali, Mexico.
Vildosola, Mexicali, Mexico, now races as the second driver for his son Gus Vildosola Jr. Considered the top Mexican team in the SCORE Desert Series, the Vildosolas drive the No. 4 Vildosola Racing Ford F-150.
At 10 a.m. on Sunday (March 16), the awards celebration will be held in the Plaza on the Malecon.
The 2008 SCORE Desert Series also includes the chase for the $20,000 Volkswagen Point Leader Bonus and the run for the Toyota Milestone Awards.
Current SCORE official annual sponsors are: BFGoodrich Tires-official tire, Sunoco Race Fuels/Bryant Petroleum-official fuel supplier, Bilstein-official shock, Volkswagen-official vehicle, Instant Mexico Auto Insurance-official Mexican auto insurance, Slime-official tire sealant, Red Bull--official energy drink and Bosch Power Tools-official power tool. I am driving down on Thursday and should be there by noon.
I am staying at the Baja Palms on the highway north of town.

A meeting Friday during contingency sounds good, maybe lunch on the Malecon somewhere. We may prerun the first 90 miles to Morelia one last time Friday afternoon after the truck goes through tech.

LOS ANGELES—Led by last year’s overall winners Mark Post/Rob MacCachren and Robby Bell, four of the last five overall 4-wheel champs and the last 10 motorcycle winners are ready for a unique ‘spring break’ this weekend at the 22nd Annual Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 desert race.
Round 2 of the 2008 SCORE Desert Series will be held Saturday in Mexico’s quaint and picturesque fishing village of San Felipe, a noted haven for ‘spring breakers’, located on the East side of the Baja California peninsula along the azure waters of the tranquil Sea of Cortez.
Featuring the third-most entries in the event’s 22-year history, over 280 entries from 20 states and six countries will compete in 27 Pro and 6 Sportsman classes in the 232-mile race. The green flag will drop at 6 a.m. (PST) on Saturday, March 15, for the motorcycle and ATV classes, followed three hours later by the car and truck classes at approximately 10 a.m. (PST) The start line for the race will once again be the landmark San Felipe Arches on Highway 5 on the outskirts of San Felipe. The race will finish just south of the Arches, directly behind the Cerveza Tecate building.
Post, Laguna Beach, Calif., and MacCachren, Las Vegas, are the defending overall and 4-Wheel winners of the popular spring race in the No. 1 Riviera Racing Ford F-150 in the featured SCORE Trophy-Truck division for 800-horsepower, hi-tech, unlimited production trucks while Bell has been the overall Motorcycle and Class 22 winner the last two year’s on the No. 1x Honda CRF450X.
Between them, team owner Post (with three) and MacCachren (6) have nine class wins in this race, and they have been part of four overall titles. Post won this race Overall in Class 1 in 1998 and in 2004 in SCORE Trophy-Truck with Jerry Whelchel as his second driver and last year with MacCachren as his second driver.
MacCachren, who was recently honored as the 2007 Dirt Sports Magazine Driver of the Year, also won as the second driver for Mexico’s Gus Vildosola in 2003 when that pair captured the overall.
This will be Riviera Racing’s first trip back to Baja since winning last year’s amazing 40th Tecate SCORE Baja 1000, the arduous adventure with 424 starters that covered 1,296 miles from Ensenada to Cabo San Lucas. The win clinched both the 2007 SCORE Overall and SCORE Trophy-Truck season point championships for the Southern California-based Riviera Racing team.
Bell, Sun City, Calif., won the motorcycle title in this race the last two year’s with injured teammate Kendall Norman. Replacing Norman as the second rider for this race is team owner Johnny Campbell, San Clemente, Calif. (Johnny Campbell Racing), who has seven class wins, including six overalls with three different co-riders.
Garron Cadiente, Mesa, Ariz., won this race overall and in SCORE Trophy-Truck in 2006 as a SCORE rookie in the No. 38 GNR Racing Ford F-150 and Steve Hengeveld, Oak Hills, Calif., won the motorcycle and Class 22 race in this event four times. In 2001, Hengeveld won with Jonah Street as his co-rider and repeated in 2002, 2003 and 2004 with Campbell has his co-rider.
Quinn Cody, Buellton, Calif., won the motorcycle and Class 22 race in San Felipe in 2005 with Chris Blais and Andy Grider on a KTM, breaking the eight-year win streak of the factory Honda teams. This year he will lead a team on the No. 2x Red Bull KTM 530XCRW with David Pearson, Las Vegas and David Kamo, New Plymouth, Idaho, as co-riders.
Vildosola, Mexicali, is racing this year as the second driver for his son Gus Vildosola Jr., in the No. 4 Red Bull Vildosola Racing Ford F-150 in the SCORE Trophy-Truck division.
Among the other racers entered this year who have been very successful in this race are Jim O’Neal, Eric Solorzano, Donald Moss, John Griffin and Adam Pfankuch.
O’Neal, Simi Valley, Calif., is an age-group motorcycle rider who has put together eight winning teams in the last seven years in San Felipe. O’Neal is the all-time co-leader for class wins in this race, tied with Dan Smith. Going for double class wins again (he won two in 2005), O’Neal will lead teams in both Class 30 and Class 50 this year on Hondas.
Solorzano, Tijuana, Mexico, has seven wins in Class 11 for stock VW Sedans while Moss, Sacramento, Calif., has five wins in the last six years in Class 3 in his sturdy Ford Bronco.
Griffin, Mission Viejo, Calif., in Stock Full and Pfankuch, Carlsbad, Calif., in Class 1-2/1600, both have four class wins in San Felipe. This year, Griffin will again race with Jeremy Spirkoff, El Cajon, Calif., in a Ford F-350, while Pfankuch will drive a VW-powered Mirage.
Arizona veteran desert racer Pete Sohren and Southern California’s rising star Robby Bell received the pole positions for four-wheel and two-wheel vehicles in the computerized drawing for starting positions in late February.
With 20 entries so far, Sohren will lead a strong field in SCORE Trophy-Truck that features many of the world’s top desert racers. SCORE Trophy-Trucks have won the overall in San Felipe 12 times in the 14-year history of the marquee racing class.
To date, Class 1-2/600 has the most entries with 29 followed by SCORE Trophy-Truck and, Class 1 with 20 each, SCORE Lite with 17 and Class 5/1600 with 12. Late registration will be accepted up until race morning.
Among the Pro Motorcycle classes, Class 22 (open) has 13 entries while Class 21 (under 250cc) and Class 30 (riders 30 years and over) have eight each. In the Pro ATV classes so far Class 24 (under 250cc) has 13 and Class 25 (open) has 12.
Pre-race festivities at the Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 will include the colorful SCORE Midway and tech inspection on the Malecon beachfront in downtown alongside the azure waters of the Sea of Cortez from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Friday.
At 10 a.m. on Sunday, the awards celebration will be held in the Plaza on the Malecon.
The 2008 SCORE Desert Series also includes the chase for the $20,000 Volkswagen Point Leader Bonus (part of the season-long $100,000 VW cash contingency program) and the run for the Toyota Milestone Awards for car and truck racers who complete every required mile of the season.

I won't have access to the internet after this morning. 4 sounds fine, I would suggest the little area with all the little taco stands down at the south end, just because that is the first place I can think of. We may be still scrambling to get the truck teched. I am sure we'll see each other before that. By the way, I know I will be at the BFG meeting at the BFG truck in contingency at noon.

From 21 states and six countries will compete in 27 Pro and 6 Sportsman classes in the 231.73-mile race. The green flag will drop at 6 a.m. (PST) Saturday, March 15, for the motorcycle and ATV classes, followed three hours later by the car and truck classes at approximately 10 a.m. (PST) The start line for the race will once again be the landmark San Felipe Arches on Highway 5 on the outskirts of San Felipe. 263 Total Starters roar in Mexico

Las Vegas' Brian Collins roars in Dodge Ram 1500 to Overall and

SCORE Trophy-Truck win at 22nd Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250

Schwarz/Christensen capture Class 1 in Jimco-BMW, Bell/Campbell ride Honda to Overall Motorcycle & Class 22 win

SAN FELIPE, Mexico—Second-generation veteran Las Vegas desert racer Brian Collins roared through the rugged trails and washes of Mexico’s Baja California desert Saturday, earning the overall and SCORE Trophy-Truck victory in the No. 1 Collins Motorsports Mopar Dodge Ram 1500 at the 22nd Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 desert race. Setting a blistering pace right from the start in San Felipe and driving solo, he covered the sandy, silty, rocky and dusty 232-mile course in just three hours, 44 minutes, 16 seconds, averaging and amazing 62.07 miles per hour.

Dominating the field of 263 desert racers and mastering the race course with blazing speed and power, Collins’ time beat not only the cars and trucks, but also the motorcycles and ATVs that competed in the popular ‘spring break’ event to earn his fourth class win in San Felipe including his second overall triumph and his fifth career SCORE Trophy-Truck race win in the 14-plus year history of SCORE’s marquee racing division for high-tech, 800-horsepower, unlimited production trucks.

It was also the first time since 1979 that a Dodge-powered vehicle won a SCORE race.

Finishing second overall and in SCORE Trophy-Truck in the elapsed-time race, 8 minutes and 27 seconds behind the masterful Collins was last year’s winning team of Mark Post, Laguna Beach, Calif. and Rob MacCachren, Las Vegas , who finished Saturday’s race in 3:52:43 in the No. 1 Riviera Racing Ford F-150.

While Collins pulled off the ‘Ironman’ run in driving his Dodge truck the entire race himself, Post and MacCachren, who were the 2007 SCORE Overall and SCORE Trophy-Truck season point champions, split the driving in their Ford F-150 with Post starting and turning over the wheel to MacCachren, the 2007 Dirt Sports Magazine Driver of the Year, at race mile 109.

The 263 starters from 21 States , Mexico , Canada , Germany , Italy and Israel competed in 27 Pro and 6 Sportsman classes for cars, truck, motorcycles and ATVs. The course covered three of the legendary, picturesque and treacherous Baja washes: Matomi, Azufre and Huatomote before heading back to the finish line in the shadow of the landmark San Felipe Arches. The race featured the fifth-largest number of starters in the 22-year history of the event.

Said Collins following his huge victory: “We never got out of the truck. We just had a great day. We ran at not a really hard pace, but a consistent pace the first 25 miles. We caught Bobby Baldwin right away. We caught Chad Ragland right away and Gus Vildosola. Then it was dust free. Garron Cadiente was pulled over and B.J. Baldwin was going slow for a while. It just opened up for us. (after opening up an eight-minute lead) I was very nervous about Rob MacCachren. I knew I had eight minutes and that's a lot of time, but there's never enough time with Rob. He's a phenomenal driver, a great friend. Hopefully someday we can drive together. When he's in a truck, you can't make mistakes. All the racers are glad to be back here in San Felipe. This course is absolutely phenomenal. I love it. The rougher the course is, the better it is for me.”

Winning the overall Motorcycle and Class 22 title was the talented team of Robby Bell, Sun City, Calif., and Baja legend Johnny Campbell, San Clemente , Calif. , on the No. 1x Johnny Campbell Racing Honda CRF450X. Finishing fourth among all vehicles, the pair finished in 4:08:32 with an average speed of 56.01mph.

For this popular race, it was the third straight overall win for Bell while Campbell secured his eighth class win and the seventh all-around title in San Felipe in his illustrious career. It was also his first SCORE Baja race win for Campbell ’s new American Honda-sponsored Johnny Campbell Racing team. Bell started the race, riding to race mile 30, Campbell did a tough middle portion from there to race mile 166 and Bell finished the final 64 miles, clinching the victory for the record-setting team.

Reflecting on his win, Bell said “It was a clean ride. I got a little confused coming into the finish and probably lost a little time. I couldn't feel my arms by the time I got off it at mile 30. I knew behind me they'd be running really fast. I gave the bike to Johnny at 30 and he just rode awesome. He took it to mile 167 and I picked up from there and brought it to here. I pulled at least a minute and a half (ahead) at the start. It was just chaotic. I passed probably eight or 10 local trucks going out, so it was hazy and scary and pretty dusty. Once I got past that, it was clean, no problems with spectators or anything. It feels awesome. It's probably one of the toughest runs you could ever do. Even though it's not so long, it's just so physically demanding. To win this one, just shows the bike was set up really well. It was flawless. In a race this short, you can't have any problems. It just comes down to seconds. It's not good being first off because you
just don't know. When you get to the finish, you just have to turn around and hope nobody comes in too son.”

Wayne Matlock, El Cajon , Calif. , lead a team to the Overall ATV and Class 25 victory for the second time in this race on a Honda TRX450R. He split the riding time equally with co-riders Harold Goodman Jr., Brownstown , Mich. , and Marc Spaeth, Warner Springs , Calif.

Matlock started the race and rode to race mile 30 and finished the race, riding the final 62 miles. Goodman rode from race mile 30 to 93 and Spaeth rode from race mile 93 to 170.

Helping SCORE Trophy-Truck sweep the podium in the overall portion of the event while also finishing third in the premiere SCORE racing division was second-generation desert racer Chad Ragland, Vista , Calif. , who drove solo to a time of 3:55:59 in the No. 33 T-Force Motorsports Toyota Tundra. The truck was making only it’s second SCORE race start after finishing 12th in SCORE Trophy-Truck in the its debut race with teammates Danny Sullivan and Dan Friedkin in last November’s 40th Tecate SCORE Baja 1000.

Former World Rally Championship star driver Armin Schwarz, of Germany , and Martin Christensen, Escondido , Calif. , split the driving to finish fourth overall and capture the unlimited Class 1 race win in a BMW-powered Jimco open-wheel desert race car. With just over one year of experience in SCORE desert racing, Schwarz pulled off his first SCORE win while the veteran former SCORE class champion Christensen earned his first ever win in Class 1.

With a time of 4:08:22 and an average speed of 56.02mph, it was also the first time a BMW-powered vehicle has ever won a class in a SCORE race.

Finishing second in Class 1 for the second of two races this season and fifth overall, Las Vegas’ B.J. Richardson drove solo and crossed the finish line in San Felipe in a Bunderson-Chevy a mere 12 seconds behind Schwarz/Christensen,

The second five overall finishers included three SCORE Trophy-Trucks and two Class 1 cars to give SCORE Trophy-Truck six of the top 10 overall finishing spots.

Sixth overall and fourth overall was Mexico ’s son/father team of Gus Vildosola Jr. and Gus Vildosola Sr. in the No. 4 Red Bull Vildosola Racing Ford F-150 while earning his best SCORE race finish with seventh overall and fifth in SCORE Trophy-Truck was Nevada casino owner Roger Norman, of Reno, in the No. 8 Norman Racing Ford F-150.

Class 1 claimed the eighth and ninth overall spots among four wheel vehicles as Mexico ’s Luis Ramirez Jr. was third in Class 1 in a HMS-Chevy and Enrique Bujanda of Socorro , Texas was fourth in the unlimited open-wheel class in a Porter-Chevy.

Ron Whitton, Mesa , Ariz. , the senior statesman in the SCORE Trophy-Truck division at 63 years old, completed the top 10 overall car and truck finishers and was a very respectable sixth in his class in the No. 38 GNR Racing Ford F-150, ending up 44 minutes and 16 seconds behind the winning Collins.

Creative veteran age group motorcycle rider Jim O’Neal, 61, Simi Valley , Calif. , became the winningest racer in San Felipe history as he put together a winning team to finish as an impressive third overall motorcycle and capture Class 30 for riders over 30 years old for his ninth class win in this race. Splitting the riding on a Honda CRF450X with O’Neal, who finished second in Class 50 on another talented team, was his son Jimmy O’Neal Jr. along with Jason Trubey, Mohave Valley , Ariz. , Luke Dodson, Castiac , Calif. , and Mexico ’s Gerardo Rojas.

Another prominent reflection of the family side of SCORE desert racing was evident by the Class 10 victory of the son/father team of C.J. Hutchins and Mark Hutchins, of Henderson , Nev. , who finished a surprising 12th overall among 4-wheel vehicles and while winning their class in a Kreger-Honda.

Keeping with the family theme in San Felipe, venerable veteran Rod Hall and his son Chad Hall, both of Reno , Nev. , won the Stock Mini and the Stock Full classes respectively. The senior Hall, 70, drove a Hummer H3 while Chad Hall, 44, won Stock Full in a new Hummer H3Alpha. Hall’s oldest son Josh Hall, 46, finished third in Stock Full in a Hummer H2 to complete a very successful day for Team Hummer.

A third son/father team that triumphed in San Felipe was Mexico ’s Rodrigo Ampudia Jr. and Rodrigo Ampuida Sr., who snagged Class 8 in a Ford F-150.

Eric Solorzano, Tijuana, Mexico, picked up his eighth win in the Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 in Class 11 for stock VW Sedans in this race while Donald Moss, Sacramento, Calif. and his brother Kenneth Moss, won Class 3 in his sturdy Ford Bronco for the sixth time in the last seven years.

Adam Pfankuch, Carlsbad , Calif. , earned his fifth win in San Felipe in Class 1-2/1600 in a VW-powered Mirage. Class 1-2/1600 had the largest field in the race with 28 starters.

Second overall among the motorcycles and in Class 22 was the team of Steve Hengeveld, Oak Hills , Calif. , and Mike Childress, Wrightwood , Calif. , with a time of 4:21:25, just over 12 minutes behind the factory sponsored Bell/Campbell tandem. Both former factory riders, Hengeveld and Childress rode a Honda CRF450X.

Anna Cody, Spring Valley , Calif. , was the only female racer to win a Class in San Felipe as she put together an all-woman team to win motorcycle Class 20 on a Honda CRF250X. Helping her Racing for Kids charity victory ride were Stacy Doerkson, Apple Valley , Calif. , Cathy Duncan, Los Alamos , Calif. , and Sarah Kritch, Bakersfield , Calif.

Among the other car and truck Class winners late Saturday were: John Holmes, Olvenhain , Calif. , (Class 7SX, Ford Ranger), A.J. Rodriguez, Perris , Calif. (Class 7, Ford Ranger), Marcos Nunez, Ensenada, Mexico (Class 5/1600, VW Baja Bug) and Ricardo Malo, Mexicali, Mexico (SCORE LIte, Curry-VW).

Among the other motorcycle class winners were teams led by Carlos Casa, Chula Vista, Calif. (Class 21, KTM 450CXF), Brett Helm, Poway, Calif. (Class 40, Honda CRF450X), Charles Marshall, Carmichael, Calif. (Class 50, KTM 530EXC) and Donald Lewis, Marlborough, Conn. (Class 60, Honda CRF450X)

Winning the ATV Class 24 was the team led by Francisco Servin, Chula Vista , Calif. , on a Honda TRX450R

PRO CARS/TRUCKS

SCORE/TROPHY-TRUCK

BRIAN COLLINS, No. 12 (first overall) — We never got out of the truck. I love it. The rougher the course is, the better it is for me.

MARK POST/ROB MACCACHREN, No. 1 (second) — MacCachren said: It was a really fast pace. Brian did really, really good today. He was running really strong. We were about 5 1/2 or 6 minutes behind him when we got in and got to within 5, then back to 6 and just kind of hung around there. We tried to play it safe, but the farther we went, the more we realized, he was going fast, so we just kept thinking he wouldn't make it. Obviously, he did. Mark got a flat early and drove on it for a while. He got it back to the pit and got it changed. He went back to about the seventh car on the road and started moving up. He was second on the road when we got in, and we just held it there.

Post said: We lost a couple positions because we sat in dust for a while and it cost us a couple minutes. Today (Collins) was flawless. We had a very strong day. Normally we would have won this race. They just had a better one.

CHAD RAGLAND, No. 25 (third) (Ragland went off-line at mile 25 and ran into a cactus) —I had trouble keeping the wheels on the ground. I couldn't get a good rhythm. I hesitated and when you hesitate to make the line and go outside, she won't want to turn back in. I got in an unfamiliar lane. I thought our race was over. It felt like five minutes, but it may only have been two. We could have done better. The truck was awesome. Any mistakes out there were my fault. The team set up an incredible truck today. This is only our second race as a team. We may be able to make this truck go a little faster. SCORE did an incredible job of putting together a really challenging race.

GUS VILDOLSA JR./GUS VILDOLSA SR., No. 4 (fourth) — Gus Sr. said: We just had a clean morning, no flats, no problems. We were there, in the hunt. Gustavo had a good chance, but there are some rough parts out there and he had bad luck with three flat tires. Collins had a wonderful day. They couldn't have done any better.

Gus Jr. said: My dad had the first half and gave me a really good truck. He took it steady. I just got it from there and passed a couple of trucks. Unfortunately in the wash, we had a couple of flats at the same time and the jack didn't work really well. It prolonged the tire change by a lot. After that, we just kind of cruised it in. As long as we're finishing and hopefully staying in the top five, we'll get points. We come to every race to win it. We don't come to finish second or third. I'm disappointed in that, but happy that we finished.

ROGER NORMAN, No. 8 (fifth) —It was brutal. It was rough and I loved every second of it. We're missing a few parts and I think something jumped out in the road in front of me. I think it was a moose.

CLASS 1

ARMIN SCHWARZ, No. 104 (first) — Co-driver Martin Christensen, who finished the race, said: It's an unbelievable day for the German team. It's a very, very extreme course. We're very excited about coming in first. Armin did a good job giving me the car. The car was much faster than we anticipated. (upon learning his team had won by 12 seconds) It's fantastic. When you drive almost 250 miles and it comes down to 12 seconds, that's just crazy. We had issues with the car and we knew we would be right on the edge, but we wanted to finish.

B.J. RICHARDSON, No. 107 (second) —It was a good time. Everything went good. We took it easy for the first 26 miles and I got passed by probably eight guys. I blew my shocks out four times in the first 26 miles. We ran hard after that. We really started running. We were hoping we could beat them, but those guys are good. They beat us. It's a good job by them.

LUIS RAMIREZ JR., No. 110 (third) — My steering wheel came loose. It almost came off, but that was the biggest problem we had. It was pretty fun. This is a hard course. It came out great for us. I love that we finished and got third.

ENRIQUE BUJANDA, No. 115 (fourth) — We had no problems with the car, no flats, but we did hit a tree and that slowed us down.

PAUL KELLER, No. 112 (fifth) — We had one flat tire when we hit a parked race car. It was stalled in the track and I tried to go around it and clipped it. It cost us a lot of time. If we wouldn't have given away a half-hour, it would have been a lot better. The CV boots cost us about 20 minutes and the tire change took another 10 minutes. We're not very fast at changing tires. We're at the finish line and that's a good step. It's a fun course for a while, but it's just rough.

CLASS 1-2/1600

ADAM PFANKUCH, No. 1645 (first) — I rolled over at about mile marker 30 and lost about three or four minutes. I had to wait for some spectators to come over and roll me over. They kind of took a while. (with 40 miles left, the floorboard on the race car came loose on one end) We ran for the last 35-40 miles with it dragging. I was getting worried about that. I also got stuck behind a truck for about 30 miles before I could get by him. Everything else went really well for us, though, no flats, no nothing. I'm really happy with our performance.

ALEX NAVARRETE, No. 1616 (second) — We had a little problem with the carburetor early, but no other problems. We were running clear. We had a lot of open space.

CLASS 3

DON MOSS, No. 301 (first) — Co-driver Ken Moss said: We missed last year, but we won five before that. It's a good feeling. Everything on the truck worked fine, except we had to keep adding oil. Other than that, it felt good. It's a little rougher course. We've run it a bunch and it's been worse here, but it's never smooth.

CLASS 7

A.J. RODRIGUEZ, No. 713 (first) —It was our first win here, so that feels good.

CLASS 7SX

JOHN HOLMES, No. 758 (first) — We had a rough day. (Co-driver) Mark Landersman had some troubles early on and then I lost a fan belt within five miles of taking over. We got to race mile 200 and got stuck for a bit. We had to fix the front end and got a flat tire when we got here, but we got through it.

CLASS 8

RODRIGO AMPUDIA SR./RODRIGO AMPUDIA JR., No. 801 (first) —Rodrigo Sr. said: We were leading and just trying to keep the car in good condition for the last section because it's so rough of a course. We got a really comfortable lead. At the start, we were just slow-paced. A few cars passed us. I just slowed down to get through the early parts and then we got going.

Rodrigo Jr. said: We were in the lead when I took over. I just brought it home and in the rough parts, I tried to take it really slow. Everything went well for us today.

CLASS 10

MARK HUTCHINS, No. 1001 (first) —Co-driver C.J. Hutchins said: I got in at mile 168. Dad started it and when it got to me the clutch was gone. The clutch started to go around mile 80 and the GPS was gone at 30. The clutch was the biggest thing. Anytime we got into the soft sand, there was just nothing there. We've been doing well. This is six straight race wins for us.

SCORE LITE

RICARDO MALO, No. 1206 (first) — This motor is fast. We pre-ran a lot, an awful lot. Arturo Honold (the co-driver) got a flat early and I got a flat and the wheel bent. We lost about 8-10 minutes there. Arturo gave it to me with a 3 1/2 minute lead. After we fixed the flat, we just took off. This engine is just unbelievable. It runs so fast.

STOCK FULL

JOSH HALL, No. 861 (first) — It's daylight when we're finishing. This just may be a fast truck, a legal fast truck. We didn't even had a flat. We only stopped so I could have this bush pulled out of my back. We started out first in the class and decided we were going to push as hard as we could without hurting the truck to see what it would do. We had nothing to lose and here we are.

STOCK MINI

ROD HALL, No. 760 (first) — (Hall drove through mile 150 before handing the vehicle over to co-driver Mike Winkel) I didn't finish it because I'm not trying to impress the chicks anymore. Thank goodness there are some things you outgrow in life. This course is something that's not very enjoyable in a stock vehicle, but it's part of San Felipe and you know that when you leave the line, so you just have to soldier it out and drive through it. It's not really racing for us, it's just getting through it. You do a lot of hunting for the smoothest roads. I had lots of patience today, just wasn't in a big hurry. I'm happy with the result. I haven't been very good about handing over a good vehicle lately.

PRO MOTORCYCLES

CLASS 22

ROBBY BELL/JOHNNY CAMPBELL, No. 1X (first) — BELL SAID: It was a clean ride. I passed probably eight or 10 local trucks going out onto the course, so it was hazy and scary and pretty dusty. It's not good being first off because you just don't know. When you get to the finish, you just have to turn around and hope nobody comes in too soon.

CAMPBELL SAID: It was our day. We started strong. I personally didn't feel too stellar today on the bike. I just rode consistent. My job was to get the bike back to Robby. We did a wheel change to give fresh wheels to Robby. We have the absolutely best riders, the best bike and the best support team, bar none. It doesn't surprise me to pull away from the competition. The competition isn't as put together as we are. We have a long history of being prepared.

STEVE HENGEVELD, No. 5X (second) — We made it here. We got second. I was just going to keep charging until I gave out. You never give up. You never know what might happen. We lost the exhaust about mile 100. I thought the bike was seizing up, so I started cruising a little. It finally broke off and we started running. I was cruising for a couple minutes because I didn't want to be stuck out there. If I had just kept going, maybe I wouldn't have lost so much time. Of course it's disappointing. No one shows up to a race and doesn't go for a win. In hindsight, we're happy we got second. It's not so bad. We can't complain. (Co-driver Mike Childress was thrown from the motorcycle at mile 10 and appeared to break his wrist) Childress said: I was minding my p's and q's, wasn't really pushing it. I hit a really deep groove in a shadow. I didn't gauge how deep it was and it sent me for a little loop over the bars. As soon as I landed, I knew I broke my wrist. I knew I had to get the bike to Steve, so I sucked it up for 20 miles and rode through the pain. I knew he would soldier on. He did an excellent job.

CALEB GOSSELAAR, No. 8X (third) — I went so far off the course, I lost like 20 minutes. I was going and it was so dusty. I was right behind somebody and I hit a rock. My chin hit the steering stabilizer and I was just dazed for a little bit. I ended up going to the wrong road. I didn't know where I was at. I didn't get on the highway, but I went along the highway. I was trying to find the course again. I was bummed because I had to get it to Timmy Wiegand at mile 30 and I thought we had a chance of winning today, but after that, we were just hoping to get top five.

CLASS 21

CARLOS CASAS, No. 100X (first) — We've been practicing a lot and working hard; it pays off. (Casas and second-place finisher Robert Gustine jockeyed for position much of the last 30 miles of the race) I knew Robert was close, but I also knew he started a minute ahead of us. When we stopped for gas, he blew by. I caught him and then I passed him. The whole way we were just going back and forth. The last five miles, we were no more than 10 feet apart. I'm used to it, but it was close. It's definitely more dangerous.

CLASS 20

ANNA CODY, No. 179 (first) — (Cody's team was comprised of all female riders) We got it. It's sweet victory, a long time coming. We didn't expect to win starting the race, but at mile 125, I pretty much expected it from then on. I got a flat tire at mile 96. The tube came flying out. I had to strap it on with zip ties and get it into a Honda pit, about 20 miles from there. Other than that, it went flawless. Right off the start, my game plan was to get through the start safely. When we got the tire fixed, I knew we were in second place and there was no real plan other than just go wide open. I wanted to get it to Sarah with a little bit of a gap to get us in here.

Co-driver Sarah Kritch, who finished the race said: It's awesome. This is what we came here to do.

CLASS 30

JIM O'NEAL, No. 300X (first) —We did really well in the 30 class.

Co-driver Jason Trubey said: It was just smooth. I just put the throttle down. Not one crash, no bobbles, nothing. We did good off the start. Luke did great off the start. By the time we gave it to Jimmy O'Neal at 31, we had five minutes on the next bike. Everybody just did their job and got it to me. I thought we made way too many changes, but it worked for us. This bike is a weapon. It's hard to hang on to at first. We started next to last in our class and kept moving up. When you're loose and you don't feel like you're trying very hard, it just feels so smooth. It just came together for us.

CLASS 40

BRETT HELM, No. 400X (first) — Every one of us made progress from the start. (Co-driver) Jon Ortner passed a lot of guys at the start and we picked them off a little at a time. We have lots of bad spots on the tires and it's so close to a flat. We just made it. I was going 100 miles an hour at one point. I just kept looking at someone in front of me and trying to catch him.

CLASS 50

CHARLES MARSHALL, No. 500X (first) — We stopped the O'Neal run. We trained our butts off. It was a clean ride the whole way through. I don't think the bike ever touched the ground. I rode for Jim last year and this was our first shot. I have a lot of respect for Jim. Jim O'Neal is one of the best riders around. I'm glad we beat him, but I have a lot of respect for him. It's a special feeling.

PRO ATVs

CLASS 25

WAYNE MATLOCK, No. 6A (first) — Everything went well today. I don't know. We won. Nothing else matters. When I passed my competition back there about 40 miles ago, I knew things were going really well. I just had to go all out, wide open, as fast as I could go and still be safe.

Co-driver Marc Spaeth said: I lost some ground. I did a little header. The bike just went up and I got off. It took me about 30 seconds to get it going again. After that, I was clean. I lost some ground and this ironman here (Matlock) made it up for me.

CLASS 24

FRANCISCO SERVIN, No. 103 A (first) — It took a lot of work. It's a very tough course. We expected to have a good chance to win. That's why we came here.

Just got back home, all safe, chase truck got vandalized before the race, many things stolen, tools, spare parts, gps unit, clothes, tents, etc.
My shift on board chupas ended at mile 70 and then got a chance to ride shotgun whit FlyingBronco as we chased for the Moss Bross bronc...... errr that sounds weird but is correct, thanks my friend, what a great group of guys, hope every one of you is safe at home or on your way, congratulations on your win.
Truck worked fine for 140 miles, neck to neck whit the bronco, got axle issues and then the tranny went hasta la vista.... found the truck midnight, back at camp at 3:30 am, cold but safe.
Manny more details and funny stories later.

Ernesto,

Glad to hear you found the truck and made it out of Matomi ok. We had a great time racing with the Chupacabras this weekend. It looked like Alejandro really liked those whoops!

Ernesto,

Glad to hear you found the truck and made it out of Matomi ok. We had a great time racing with the Chupacabras this weekend. It looked like Alejandro really liked those whoops!

Dan

oh yes, my bro was amazed by the performance of the chupakabras at those whoops, and me too indeed,, we did the switch of drivers at rm 93, by then moss where ahead by less than a minute, wel, both made a pit at the same place,. moss leaving first while i was jumping in the chups,. from what i heard moss were having oil tranny problems, us was overheating pretty bad, i step on it to try to catch the moss guys but was impossilbe, have to keep the chups at a steady 70mph due to overheating problems, temperature was over 240 so we had to stop every 2 to 3 miles for 10 to 15 minutes to let the temperature drops a little bit, and the story went like that for at least from rm93 to rm110, we were just crusing with a class 11 from EL SOMBRERITO, it was fun, sorry if messed the fun of watching the irc live, my thought was always with you, never stop thinking that you were having fun seeing the moss and the chups battling at sf, the chups suspension performed awsome, after rm 110 o 120 the temperarature keept at a steady 210, so it was gas on again, i had my two hands on the steering wheel while my co dog was shifting to 3rd geard on those whoops, aaawwsoooomeee, i was amazed, never thought that was possible with our chups, well, by rm 140 +-, an oil seal from the rear differential blew out, that was it for us, i decided to quit, and to look for an exit, we had all the scape routs on the gps (not our gps, cry cry), so that was the matomi wash , so the plan was to get out from there and make it to puertesitos road,. we were enjoing the scenario when suddenly the tranny leak all the oil,. thats why we were out of the track, we arrived ther by 5pm or 6 really dont know, but stud there until my bro and fj40 arived by 1am or so, well,. this is the short story, ok,. will create another post to thks everybody,.

sorry if messed the fan of watching the irc live, my thought was always with you, never stop thinking that you were having fun seeing the moss and the chups battling at sf

It was awesome watching you guys battle it out! In fact, I had just been saying "Man! Chupas is kicking a$$" when you guys began to drop back. I knew something happened. IRC showed zero, then 42mph, then zero, then 26, then zero. It kept happening! I was pulling for you from behind the computer. Sorry your day ended that way, but can't wait to see you guys at the 500 again!

Hey guys, thanks for the cheers, glad to be part of a great race, we work many hours on the explorer to get it ready for the race, even with the little surprise we had on friday, the decision was made to gather the resources we had left and do what we where there for. The team manage to get a loaned GPS unit and we went to contingency and tech, the new graphics really got attention and for the first time, we handed out team stickers, that was really cool (I will post them later). After tech chupas and I meet with the Moss brothers and their team, this guys are champions all around, they even offered us assistance from their pits an a spare GPS in case we had any issues with the one we had borrow. Thanks guys, we really appreciate your help.
Alejandro and I got to start the race, first miles with no problems, we catch up to the bronco about a mile in to the whoops and stay behind them for quite some time waiting for the right spot to make the pass, the wind was blowing all the dust away sow you could see yellow reflectors far away in the distance. As soon as we saw a good line on the left side of the course we went for it, AWESOME!!! side by side for a few seconds, very clean pass, had a great view from my seat. This went back and forward as we started to have cooling problems and had to slow down to keep the engine from melting, they pass us again as we made a pit stop at mile 46 to do a quick fix on a missing recuperation bottle cap, left the pit and Alex saw the bronco getting some service just a few yards ahead and stepped on the gas to get some distance.
Mile 60 was supposed to be the spot for me to trade co-dog duty with the new guy but there was no chase truck in site, after some fowl language in spanish was transmitted trough the intercom, we kept going foward..... just past checkpoint 1 we witnessed a tree way battle between class 11 cars, this guy are really crazy, in some spots they were side by side but quickly move over to let us pass. At mile 70 we saw the new co-dog waving us to a stop just in front of a couple of trucks, I climbed out, as i got out of his racing gear (mine was stolen inside of my backpack the day before)he told me the chase truck suffer some kind of suspension problem and was stranded somewhere in the road to Valle de la Trinidad, help him strap in to the truck and send then on their way to the dry lake, as I turn around, a black race truck stops in between of me and the two trucks, a few quick words and then left in a hurry. At that precise moment I realized that I was left behind at the mouth of the dry lake without a chase truck and that we had made a co-dog swap in front the Mosses chase trucks..... a red Land Rover and a familiar white Bronco with a large autofab sticker on the front window, yes that was flyingbronco´s rig that I had meet the day before and he was giving me the "and what are we gonna do with you" look.... I just stood there and ask for a ride to the highway, sure he said, clime in.
TO BE CONTINUED....

TO BE CONTINUED....

Great reading so far guys! Sucks about the gear. Where did that happen, in SF? That isn't too normal for SF.

waiting for the continued story, and congrats to the Moss Bros. MAN I WISH I'D ENTERED (who knows... maybe that would have been 3 cars with problems) :D

Part 2
I got the ride back to the starting line after contacting the guys from the broken chase truck, they were on their way to Valle de la Trinidad on the back of a tow truck, there was no reason for me to go their way, but I could wait in the arches for them or the other chase truck. As we rode down the highway I could hear communications From Moss chase one, the bronco and the explorer were still head to head after the driver change in race mile 93( Alex and the new guy got out and Chupas and Carlos hoped in), good, we still have a race going on.
After they drop me at the arches, Rick, Tom And Julia went on their way to race mile 163 for a fueling pit stop for the bronco. TT´s were arriving already, sow I took quick looks, hoping I woud´n miss someone from my team passing by the arches, they finally did, 3 hours later, hehehe.
301 arrives at the finish line and no news from 302 yet.
Finally, thanks to Rick, I hear the message from the weatherman "Race 302 is stop with a broken tranny in race mile 149 and chase 302 is in race mile 145 trying to retrieve it but got tranny problems" the word "fire" was thrown around in the sentence somewhere...... this racing business started to suck big time, RM 149 is in the middle of Matomi wash, we now have a broken racer, possibly a broken F250 and no news from F150 back in Valle de la Trinidad..... you now the moment when you think WHAT THE FLUX AM I DOING HERE!!!! well, it was that time in my watch.
RESCUE MISSION
We filled up the ranger with fuel and drove to the course access in km 32 of the Puertecitos Road, the finish line was close, so we decided to go the wrong way on the course hoping to find the explorer first and then go looking for the F250, this time luck was on our side as we came across the F250 at RM158, low on diesel but other way OK, they where coming with the course and did not see the explorer, we took their working radio and send them on their way back to the main road, it was useless for them to follow us without fuel. Manage to get a hold of the weatherman, clear the chase truck issue and trough IRC (this thing paid for it self), got the location of the explorer " 2 miles east of the course, by RM 149".... YES!!!, finally, there is an access to the top of Matomi, in between miles 149 and 150, thats got to be the reason they didin´t see it.
As we kept driving, the ranger started to heat up really bad, stopped, allowed to cool down a bit and got some extra water from 1802 chase, told them where their car was and moved on. Left the course trough the access road and found a shiny trial of ATF on the sand that lead us to the explorer two miles inside the canyon, the tranny had lost all the oil, Chupas and Carlos got a fire going and were preparing to take a nap, hehehe better yet, they were already sleeping. The tranny was losing fluid pretty fast and was a no go, from that point, it was 6 miles of sandy wash back to the Puertecitos road or 20 miles trough the course, there was no way we could pull it off with the ranger..... so we follow the sandy access road.
As the sand got to heavy for the ranger to have good traction, Alex And I jump up in the back of the bed to try to make it a Little heavier, and then jump in the back of the explorer to seat on the spare tires and enjoy the ride. As the walls of the canyon got narrower, the moon appear on top of one of the walls and gave us one of those impressive visions Baja trows at you when you start to doubt it, the glowing silhouettes of giant cactus lining the rim of the desert canyon walls, that was it, I found the reason I was there, I had to see that!!!!, bummer, no camera, just that memory that makes you come back again and again. 3 more miles to the highway shouted Chupas from the drivers seat of the explorer, he was keeping an eye on the GPS unit, great, we were out of the canyon and soon on our way to camp, unless something else happened..... and happend it did.
As we tried to cross a patch of loose sand, The ranger was barely getting any traction, Chupas got the idea to pour all the extra fluid in the tranny just to get it out of the sand and on top of the hard pack trail about 100 feet ahead. Alex and I pour the fluid, as we are done, ranger and explorer start moving, quite fast I must add, we start walking to the hard pack and they are not stopping, we start running to try and climb on the back of the explorer and they are moving even faster and faster until we saw the lights disappear behind a hill.... Chupas told me he kept shouting miles to go too us, until they got to the highway and noticed we were not on board, hehehe, it´s was not funny, we walked for about a mile in the desert at 2 in the morning, following the tracks left behind by the Baja T/A´s and the string of ATF shining with the moonlight, before Carlos came back to find us. Well, it´s funny now, it was fun.
Stop at SF for some hot dogs and arrived to camp at 3:30, all chase trucks and crew were there, trip back to TJ had no incidents, thank god, everybody is back ok, already planning next race.

I have a question, what is a "recuperation bottle cap"? I sent your story to Judy Smith, and she had the same question.

soryy, water reservoir,. for the radiator,. or, antifrezze reservoir,. you know, when the engine overheats, the radiator caps release some presure sending the water to the "recuperation bottle" as our frind fj40 said. :D

our recuperation bottle is a very cheap one, 99 cents bottle, haha, so, it had a plastic cap, very simple cap, mmm, better show u some pic. ok.ha.
