(Copied and moved from Shaner Cage Thread) Coming along nicely, Roach...... I am building the same thing, but am much further behind in the build, although most of the plan is in place. Looks like you went with 6" wide front fenders. Why so wide, when the track width can only be 4" wider than stock overall? Seems like a lot of fiberglass hanging out there that isn't needed.......Plus the fact that it is supposed to closely resemble the stock look. Or, am I not going to have enough room with my 3" fiberglass fenders? Thanks for the info. Jerry

the 6" fenders were given to me on trade for some work i had done a while back. they do not look to bad when you shove a set of 35 projects under there, but yea, they are big. as far as the "supposed to resemble closely to stock look" - that refers to the design, not the bulge. they still follow the body lines thru the length of the bronco, so they are fine. i am going to try and get the rears to match also. if i cant find anyone who makes them that wide, then i am going to go back to 3" fronts and sell these. anyone intersted???

started bulding the front suspension this week. lots of work!!! we are cycling it on "solid-works" to get it right the first time. each beam is getting a 1.5" extension and i am making custom radius arms. i wont have any photos for a bit, but will post as soon as i do.

Sweet! Thanks for the info on the previous post. On the fenders, heck just get what you want now for the rears and let the fronts be a little bigger. No biggie, really. Just wait until you smash 'em, and them go with the 3" fenders. Looks great! Hey, why not just go 2" on each beam and call it good....or are you figuring on gaining that other 1/2" per side with the wheel off set? I'm still not sure EXACTLY how they want us to measure the 4" wider overall. Some say it's outside of the tire edge, others say it is from the center of a stock tire to the center of the built race truck tires.

When I last spoke to Savage, He said its measured from the center line of the tires, The same way the factory would measure it!

Does he have a list of all the vehicles and what they are from the factory, or if there is a vehicle in question does he run around with a tape measure and try to find a stock one to go off of? If there is a list, is this list accessable? Like I said, I was just figuring on adding 2" to each beam and calling it good. I am planning on running stock rims so the center of the tire would be in the same location on the rim. I'm thinking this will be on the money.

a pair of 26 gal "Fuel Safe" fuel cells are located under the seats. they are pretty trick. they are connected in the center with a hose, so you can fill from either side of the car - or both if you need a fast pit!!! as far as getting out, i am 5" 8" 160lbs. old time runner. biggest run accomplished was the LA Marathon back in 98. i think i will be OK. besides, the cage window opening is no smaller than our class 1 cars at work. better safe than sorry.

well, if you were to buy any class 1 car from us, you would get them under the seats also. we have been running them like that for some years now. max space savers and we can get alot of fuel in there also. my bronco is gonna hold 52 gals of fuel, thats not bad! next time you see Chuck Hovey's new class 1 - look inside that. that thing is one big fuel cell!!!! but he never has to stop for fuel, either. your suspension characteristics stay more consistent becouse you do not get the low fuel level on the rear of the car. the only thing we are gonna have to sort out is getting as much weight in the rear to try and balance the truck out. so the radiator, batteries, tires, tool bag, and etc are being located in the rear somewhere. we took some time planning this out, so i hope it all works.

quick question roach ... looks like you just using the shell of the cab with fiberglass all around, but what about the floor? i thought class 3's had to run the stock floor pan (with allowences for sinking fuel cells and what not) and/or the stock firewall. but i don't have my rule book with me at the moment.
are you guys just gonna' skin the floor with sheet aluminum, and if so is that legal per 3 rules?

Looks good, lots of tubing, door hinges not required! I like the spring perches, the stock ones are junk and won't work with race springs anyway.
52 gallons of fuel would really be nice, that is a pretty normal place to mount them in a buggy. We have our fuel cell as far back in the frame as we can get it, and honestly I can barely tell the difference when the tank is full or empty. I think it has something to do with how much weight we already have back there, and a 10% change is hard to notice.
I really look forward to seeing it out there. Might have to take a couple days off your regular job to get it finished though. It has taken 3 years to get this far, and there's still a bunch of work to do! (You know I'm kidding you!)

Skinning the interior and floor with other than stock sheet metal has been done by vehicles in C3 that have already been approved by SCORE and raced. There was quite a bit of discussion on another forum by racers that wanted to run stock sheet metal trucks once a year at the Baja 1000.

So in theory class 3 can be like say a TT or class 8?
(follow me here, I am not trying to insult any one or start anything, this is an honest question)
So I could take a 'stock' chasis, tube frame the rest of the vehicle (much like the queen) and then throw on fiberglass fenders and a cab shell and be approved in SCORE? I thought for class 3 people had to use metal body sheets?
I am being kinda critical because I am in the works of building a class3 and I do not want to build something that was meant to be raced against class3s from 1998. Thanks for any info guys. Here is a shout out saying thanks to retroblazer for answering my questions on RDC.

The rules about the frame are pretty clear. Yes, you can run tubular sub frames off the stock frame, but you are still need to incorporate the stock frame. Most of us have boxed our frames, but I guess it could always be done by integrating tube into them. I'd love to see some examples.

I believe the rules say that the stock material must be replaced by similar thickness material. I don't know if it says that it has to be the same type of material. Steel vs. aluminum

It doesn't say that. " Must retain stock steel cab" Which is the roof, windshield posts and pillars behind the door that can be seen from outside. "No internal stock sheet metal is required" The other pieces, on a Bronco anyway that must remain steel are the door sills that can be seen and the cowl piece. If you look carefully Roach has all these on his and nothing else. The only other metal required is to meet CR39 firewall and CR42 floorboard rules that have no thickness requirements. All other bodywork can be any material as long as it still looks somewhat like the vehicle you started with. Mounting relationship of Body to Frame stock +-1".
Rulebooks are cheaper than steel and labor.

could not have said it better myself. i went back and forth many times with Savage to clarify the rules for me. i have kept all that is needed to be legal. you can run fiberglass doors, hood, front and rear fenders. all firewalls can be replaced with whaterver you want. also the floor. that goes for any and all sheetmetal from the rear or the truck. even the inside can be skined. the roof of the trucks have an inner shell and an outer shell. you can remove the inner shell and still be legal. Don is right, it had taken me a couple of years to get to this point. mostly becouse we were low on finances after i ran the 2004 season. but we are back on it and most of the time was taken by going back and forth on rule clarification with Savage............so what you see is what you get when it comes to being legal.

awesome thread ... but also shows how a competitive C3 can easily end up as much as a class 8 truck. this is prob. one reason why the class is loosing interest b/c for the same about of money as the C3 you can race in a "faster" division.
it's sad but *most* people will always choose the faster/popular/largerst/newest division for the same amount of money.
i just love C3 though b/c of the vehicles themselves. like the Moss Bronco...how cool is that thing!? it's the best.

you know though, as much as i preach how open a class 3 "can be", remember that i can have a bitchin' cage, all the bitchin' fiberglass, cool guages and the biggest GPS available, tubeworks 4" housing rear end, Alcon 6-piston brakes, and a 800hp rousch built stroker, but still be limited to my front and rear 4X4 driveshaft angel/suspension limits. the same limits that the Moss Bro's and anyone else in class 3 has to deal with. the fact is that we are all going to reach a max travel limit with our 4X4's that are not dictated by rules, but by our own class. desert racing is just short of being "all about suspension travel".
a few years back, i think it was John kearny winning class 3 in a jeep cherokee. how much travel do you think that thing had??? mine had 10" up front, 12" in the back.

I dont know class 8 hasn't exactly been overflowing with entries either. I think there are just way more options these days on what you can build and race. Some poor misguided individuals spend as much on a Rhino as they could race a 3 or 8.

NO KIDDING ... at the last 250 i was talking to a guy about his Rhino and he was telling me he had sunk over $25K into it! how it had all this, and all that on it and was one of the faster Rhinos out there. i was laughing to myself when we passed him in our Class 11. hehe :p

True...true....true.....and yeah, maybe Blue! 2008 should be intresting. May have more competition for that #300 besides Roach. The Kia's might turn up for the season as well. Who knows? Hey, Don, "IF" the #300 gets taken away from you, are you gonna build a new truck and move up and into class 8?

lets put it this way, no too much in rear bumper is done. now the front bumber will have some strength built into it as i plan to kindly ask fellow racers to move out the way for "mean green!"
my old race car was green, not as bright though. thought i would keep the tradition alive as we had some good finishes with that old car. plus it stands out from over a mile away coming into the pits and the kids love the color - and that plays into the autism awareness fundraisers we would like to do for the entire season next year.
besides, if you are walking down contingency, and see a black bronco, a white bronco, and maybe even a red bronco, wont you bypass all of them to see the one that is "glowing" in the daytime? i can promise lots of attention at my contingency push-thru!!

still lots of work before we get it in the dirt. the casters you see in the rear (and in front if you look close enough) are what it sits on in the garage. it is a frame that bolts onto the bronco frame to be able to wheel in around in the garage. we loaded in onto the trailer so the graphics guys can do their magic next, and i just left the caster cart on there for now. we have not even droped our race motor or tranny in it yet. LOTS OF WORK TO GO!!!
we had BIG plans for this years Baja 1K, but unfortunately my daughters quinceniera (yes, i am Mexican, for those who dont know a quinceniera is what we do if you whites were doing a sweet sixteen) has taken way more funds from us than anticipated. we are WAY over budget on this party - to the tune of about $8,000 now!!!! AAHHHH!!!!
anyway, priority's first, and my baby girl gets hers before i get mine, sooooooooooo...................we now hope to debut for the Baja 250. we have no intentions on doing Laughlin.
i hope to see more 3's out there soon. by the time we debut i would like to see at least 10 in class (so i can cash out big with my trophy!!!!:D)

Is the cage 2" - some photos it looks like, but others I thought not.
I wouldn't look for 10 in Laughlin any time soon. You all know my thoughts, way too much money for so little racing. The most we've ever had was 3-4.

well, here we are. at the fork in the road.
on one hand...........releasing the badest class 3 built since probably the Ahsley/Smith days.
on the other, full help and support IF i switch classes now.
sorry guys, i am jumping ship. moving onto a 2 seat 1600 Jimco. my daughter is just about old enough to ride with me now, and i can get lots of help from Jimco, but not if it is in a Ford. sucks, in a way.........becouse i really looked forward to removing the King from his throne (we all know who I am talking about). good news, obviously, is racing in a Jimco 2 seater 1600 car. so now maybe one of you lucky guys can be the new proud owner of the mean green???
yes, that means it is for sale. i will sell whole or part out. would prefer to sell whole though. here is a break down of what i got to go with it right now.................
class 3 project
no mild steel anywhere, everything on this ride is chromoly
2" chromoly cage, score legal and tagged
pair of 25 gal custom fuel safe cells. 50 gal total. fit under seats for better weight distribution. connect in the center, so you can fill both sides at the same time, or do one and fill both.
comes with all fiberglass front to back, including grill, headlights, and turn signals. hood is glassworks, fenders and henneman, doors and rears are perry's. body is completly removable in case of rollover for easy repair and replace.
custom steering bearing assy and mount, all chromoly shafts and Sweet U-Joints from the steering wheel to the steering box.
C&R radiator with heat exchanger built in as a tranny cooler.
B&M pro ratchet shifter, custom console mounted
4 15x7 american racing wheel machined for 5/8 studs
3 BFG Projects. 2 front grooved are new with 0 miles
ATI engine adapter kit, adapts 351w to TH400 tranny
400hp 351w long block w/ accesories (on serpentine belt)
3 spare TH400 trannies
2 NP241 t-case's
vdo guages, includes efi fuel pressure, oil press, water temp, oil temp, tach
pair of Bosch high pressure fuel pumps
custom aluminum radiator catch can
2 spare front dana 44 drivers side beam assy's
auto fab motor mounts
deaver 1/4 elliptic springs
stripped truck alone: $5000
fuel cells: $1500
all fiberglass: $850
custom steeing: $150
radiator: $350
shifter: $100
rims: $250
engine adapter: $350
long block: $1800
spare tannies: $500
spare t-case's: $600
guages: $200
fuel pumps: $200
radiator catch can: $80
spare dana 44's $250
motor mounts: $200
deaver springs: $600
BFG project T/A (2) $350
BFG mud T/A $150
those are the prices for all the parts if i part it out. again, i would like to sell as a whole to someone who will finish and race it. we had plans to do 1/4 elliptic in the rear, so these are custom built springs from deaver for the rear weight of this truck. i can also provide the mounting locations for the rear lower links and the upper wishbone link for the rear suspension. we had done this on solid-works and were able to get 19" of usable travel with 28 degrees on the u-joints. the motor was built here in san diego. i can try and locate the builder for you if intersted in specs.........the guy i bought it off also lost interest in a project he was building and i forgot who the builder was.
all this totals to $13,480, so lets just call it $13,500.
i would consider selling it whole for $12,000.
I AM NOT DESPERATE TO SELL IT!!!! so dont call me with some low-ball offer. if it does not sell, i will keep building it a little at a time and use it as a pre-runner or something.
this will be a really nice ride if the right person gets ahold of this. half the work is done. if intersted, E-mail me and we can discuss further. thanks.

maybe the right person will buy it and i still will?
i am not getting out of this class becouse i dont like it. i would consider finishing it for someone else (obviously money being the key there!) and maybe sometime i could get in it?? options are always there. i have alot of time, energy, and money invested in this. alot of personal thoughts and ideas here. the cage desing, how the cells are, how the body is removable, etc, etc, etc, etc. these are all ideas of mine that no one has really taken the time to do.
you got to admit, that untill i started building this, it seems that many of you were in the dark as to what could be done in class 3. everyone was still thinking "stock" was the key word in the rules. i would like to think that i opened the doors back up in this class and maybe spark interest as well.
i just got a good oportunity with the 1600 class that i dont think i can pass up. i have raced the buggy's and i have raced the trucks. i like racing the trucks personaly.
i am also finishing up a Jeepspeed project for a friend / customer. i will probably also be driving that from time to time. somehow someway, i will still be involved in this class. hey if it dont sell, i will continue to build (at an even slower pace!!) and just show up one day unexpectedly!
i got a feeling you guys will still se it though...........i posted this for sale yesterday and already have several interested members.
P.S.
i was asked if it had a rear end becouse it was not listed, sorry about that............there is a rear end here, but it is a bone stock bronco 9". banjo housing.

yup, Dave is the new proud owner.
cant tell you guys how many people where calling me and making counter offers to tell dave to take a hike and sell it to them!!
i have thanked Dave a couple of times in person, but let me thank him publicly..........
i want to thank dave for a couple of reasons.
first - he is keeping it here with you guys. staying class 3 legal and being raced with you guys. he has set a goal for the baja 1000 of this year.
second - his visions of this car being finished is nothing short of what i had in mind. so you will see this thing to the end as i had planned on it.
third - for letting me (or should i say "paying" me:D) to finish it just the way i had intended it to be done.
and last, the most important - for allowing me to work a deal with him in which i will still hunt down Don and his brother and show him just how brite green this will look as i pass him!!!!:D
first order of business will be to mod the door bars to allow Dave access in and out. the new design was just given the OK by Score Tech (Savage), so i can get started on that. then we move onto the seats, then rear suspension and then front. as i start building, i will send all photos to dave, and he can post as he wishes. this is his truck now.

I like this game of speculation racing... Here's my guess:
The SCORE rules say "Secondary suspension systems are allowed. With secondary suspension system disconnected the primary system must be capable of maintaining ride height +- 1.5-inches."
So to racers like these guys, that really means "You can build any kind of suspension you want (three-link with an upper wishbone, coilovers, and bypass shocks mounted to the lower links in the photos). Then you have to mount a "leaf spring" as your primary suspension, but honestly, all that leaf spring has to do is hold the rear of the vehicle up to within 1.5 inches of ride height."
Based on the rulebook, all the leaf spring really has to be is a "ride-height facilitating device". I can't even find anywhere in the rule book that says they primary suspension (leaf spring) has to be functional at the end of the race. So you might be able to get away with a "leaf spring" that wasn't critical to the dynamic energy control of the vehicle (you know, the important part) as long as it held the vehicle up at the beginning of the race.
Now, if SCORE required the primary suspension to support the vehicle to within 1.5-inches of ride height at the end of the race--that would be a trickier deal all together.
For the record, I can’t wait to see this Bronco race.

Seven years, thats about as long as the debate for a rule change
As usual Mr B the score rules are quoted . but with out the intent of the rule. but i guess thats part of racing . figure out where the loop hole is and then get opinions that confirm we read the rules to fit our builds

Nice looking motor, and correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't dry sumps banned from score 3?
Dry sump oiling is not restricted, here is a copy of the rule:
CR23 Engine & Engine Displacement
Where applicable, engines must displace no more than specified, & SCORE may check engine displacement & location. In classes that require stock fuel injection, this will require the use of stock intake manifold & throttle body for the motor for which it is attached. Computer & injectors are open.
Engine must be of the same manufacturer basic design & type & have the same number of cylinders as the one installed by the manufacturer. Any displacement engine may be used as long as the original block casting remains the same. Block must be made of the same type of material as that of the block is installed in the vehicle by the manufacturer for the particular chassis & body series. If vehicle is supplied with an aluminum block, only the aluminum block installed in the vehicle by the manufacturer may be used. Engine must be readily available to the general public in the U.S.A.
Engine must not have more valves per cylinder than the stock heads that where delivered in that vehicle.
Any make of automotive carburetor(s) may be used maintaining a combined total of not more than one venturi per cylinder. Stock factory fuel injection may be used.
Items with no restrictions include:
(A) Strengthening & balancing
(B) Valve train & camshaft
(C) Bore & stroke
(D) Pistons
(E) Blueprinting
(F) Oil & water cooling systems
(G) Air cleaners
(H) Fuel pumps
(I) Exhaust systems
Water & vapor injection not allowed unless originally equipped.
Engine must be located in the stock mounting location as delivered from the manufacturer +/- 1 inch. This will be measured from the centerline of the front spindle to the back of the block. Engine height must remain stock +/- 1 inch as measured at the centerline of the crank.

The arms were started by Ricardo and finished by Steven Arlia of Arizona Precision Fab. APF is going to help me build the car to completion.
I decided to go away from the under the seat fuel cells for two reasons: 1. I wanted to lower the seat height and 2. I wanted more fuel capacity, I went form 50 to70 gallons. The new cell sits between the frame rails, behind the cab and in front of th rear axle.
Yes, King 4.0 on all four corners.

This engine makes over 500FP of torque from 2500 rpm to 5500 and that is the general range that we will be running in.
There are not as many choices in the intake manifold when using the Yates heads but with 433 cubic inches and the cam used, it has plenty of low end.
