I personally would stick with the Spool.
seem the most popular & predictable in all situations.

I am running a rear ARB, & it works AWSOME when it actually works.
My compressor was'nt working during the MINT400 pre-run so I the rear was running in open mode.
So now I want a spool, no OBA to deal with. http://www.thewebwheeler.com/forums/images/smilies/m2c.gif

For the P.C. track, you'll want some pretty low gears. The track will never be over 1 1/2 miles long, so the holeshot and quick acceleration out of the corners is critical. I don't think you'll ever get over 50 or 60 mph out there, so I'd think 5.13 or 5.29's (maybe even lower) would be great for the short course.

(The problem with lower gears is that you've got fewer pinion teeth to transmit the power to the ring gear. This typically leads to a bent pinion, two locked wheels, and a driver with a great spectator seat for the rest of the race! I have found a set of 5.50s with an 8 tooth pinion that I'd feel comfortable running however!)

As far as general desert use, we've figured our ideal ratio with 33's would be 4.56's, and 4.88's with the 35's (though for now, we're running the 35's with 4.56's). I'm not sure how well that crosses over to your use, but I'd bet you're pretty close in power to weight ratio, since you've got a smaller motor and a lighter truck!

Remember, fewer parts is fewer parts to fail! --> SPOOL

As I read this... all I could think was LOW LOW gears and the spool. Given your horse-power and wheel size...

Well anyway, then I read what Dave wrote and he has it spot-on. I don't know all that much about going too low and having issues, but we've got 4.88's and 35 inch tires... so if you can get into a 5:5 like he says in a reliable package, I don't think you would regret it. Rarely do I wish we were geared taller, but occasionally lower.

I run mostly short courses, too. CORR type tracks.

I run 4.88s/31s now (On Dana 44s front/rear), and for my new car, I just picked up some 5.83s for the rear 9" and we'll run 33s or 35s. My competitors are running 2wd and 6:1 or 6.5:1 in the 9", but I want to keep it 4x4, and 5.86s is the lowest I found find for the Dana 44 LP front, and I don't want the weight of a 60.

So 5.83 it is.

Anyone ever look into a quick change rear that SCCA racers sometimes use?

http://www.hotrodscustomstuff.com/PS-Winters.html

These quick change gears in the rear end can actually give you two gear sets per gear set and you can change gears wicked fast. I have no idea how the durability of these would stand up to desert racing though. I would imagine that they wouldn't hold up.
